Review

Through a meticulous analysis, rich in archival research, Anne Parsons brilliantly illuminates the historical transformations in custodial confinement from the asylum to the prison over the period 1945 to 1985. Parsons unmasks the myths surrounding deinstitutionalization and reveals instead how prisons and correctional facilities filled the emptying spaces of mental hospitalization--providing the infrastructure for the carceral state of the late twentieth century. Anyone working on decarceration must read her haunting historical account.--Bernard E. Harcourt, Columbia UniversityAnne Parsons brilliantly unpacks a vital social justice issue of the past half century: how prisons became de facto sites of treatment for persons with severe psychiatric disabilities in the United States. As she shows, the over-incarceration of people with psychiatric disabilities stemmed in large part from the rapid growth of the U.S. penal system, leading to what she brilliantly calls a 'crisis of confinement.' Beautifully written and persuasively argued, Parsons takes readers on a quest that traverses time and place. Along the way, this book pushes readers to rethink many longstanding assumptions about the ways we as a society treat the most needy among us. It is required reading, indeed.--Jonathan M. Metzl, MD, PhD, author of Dying of WhitenessIn this compelling history of the transformation of psychiatric care in the United States, Parsons reveals the link between social-welfare contraction and the rise of mass incarceration in the second half of the twentieth century and sheds new light on the relationship between the 'rights revolution' and the triumph of neoliberalism.--Marisa Chappell, Oregon State UniversityImportant and timely, Parsons's analysis of postwar deinstitutionalization complicates and deepens the existing narratives about its causes, timing, and consequences.--Nancy Tomes, Stony Brook University

Asylums and prisons share a lot more common ground than most people realize. In this book, the author examines how politics, social upheavals, and fear politics combined over the years to alter prison and mental health policies. It seems we have always criminalized "abnormal" social behaviors, whether by committing people to asylums or locking them in prisons. These two systems fed off each other in a sort of see-saw pattern. And now, with asylums mostly gone, we have instead created mini asylums within prisons. Not much has really changed in 70 years, particularly for those living with severe mental illness. The information is laid out well, taken decade by decade, and the content is easy to follow. The writing style is matter-of-fact, more textbook than narrative. The style is probably too dry for the casual reader, being more suited for research and those of us wanting to understand the complexities of this topic.I was disappointed with the brevity. I pre-ordered this book months before the release, and I didn't pay attention to page count. Given the expanse of content, I was surprised to see how short this book is. Amazon lists the book as 240 pages. My hardcover is 211 pages. The epilogue ends on page 155, with the remaining pages being the appendix, acknowledgements, and notes. The first 19 pages are the introduction, which is essentially a summary of what you'll find in the book. So, really, the material is covered in only 136 pages. What the description doesn't say is that the author focuses mostly on the state of Pennsylvania and the city and statewide changes there. Parsons does at times mention other asylums and prisons in other states, but for the most part she holds up Pennsylvania as an example of what was happening nationwide.Despite my desire for broader and perhaps more detailed coverage, I still believe this is a book well worth reading. In our decades of flux from asylums to prisons, we have yet to stop criminalizing mental illness. Books like this force us to examine the truth of our system and our society.*As an aside, I want to mention that the font size used in the hardcover edition is smaller than average. The book took me quite a while to read because the small font strained my eyes, particularly at night when my eyes were already tired. If you have healthy, young eyes, this probably won't bother you. Otherwise, you might want to opt for the Kindle version.*

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in understanding what asylums were alike in the first half of the 20th century. The book is filled with all sorts of factual information. The author has put a tremendous amount of research into this writing. There is a footnote section that is replete with all sorts of information and factual documentation supporting the author's discussions. The book mentions an old story from a Time Life magazine article in 1946 titled "Bedlam" . This famous article exposed the horrors and mistreatment of patients, in various asylums, throughout the eastern United States, during the first half of the 20th century. The introduction starts off with a story about an African American man named George Elder. George refused to fight in WWII and was labeled a Conscientious Objector (CO) which was supposed to give a 5 year prison term. George Elder was sent to Byberry Hospital for over 5 times that long. He lost 29 years to the mental institution. This story about George Elder is a magazine article titled, "The Man the World Forgot ." It was very easy to find this because it is the very first footnote the author mentions. These footnotes allowed me to go and read that article, along with many others, as I progressed throughout the book.As I started chapter one I noticed the first discussion about a book written in 1946 titled "The Snake Pit" . Before even reading chapter one, I went and watched the movie. This book was a great inspiration for me to do my own research as I read a long. Again, the footnote section was put together very, very well. I know this author must have spent a lot of time putting together the notes. This makes this book a gem. This book discusses the deinstitutionalization of mental hospitals in America. The book discuss the transition from Asylums, (Mental Hospitals) to prisons between the 1940s and 1950's, when asylums, mental hospitals and sanitariums were increasing inpatients and hit their peak. The book also shows that In the 1960s asylum inpatient population went on the decline and prisons inmate numbers went on the incline (between 1960 and 1970.) The author does a great job describing this and chronicles all of the activities, including why this all was happening, and the dynamics that went into the transition. I have to give this book 5 stars. This is an excellent research book. Thank you Anne E. Parsons for providing such a wonderful record of the transition, "From Asylum to Prison".

There are obviously tons of memoirs about Italy because it's, well, it's Italy. From the first time I went, long ago, until now, I'm hooked on the country, and thus I've read many of those books about moving to Italy---and some are very good. But this one is exceptional. Maybe partly because I had (and still have) no idea who Chris Harrison is, Maybe partly because he's young, and not a retired academic or Brit. I am just knocked out with the quality of his writing, the keenness of his insights, and his wit. (Plus, it's a good love story that a man can enjoy.)If you like Italy, particularly the southern part, you'll really enjoy this book. I'd give it more stars if that were possible. But truthfully I haven't quite even finished the book, and that's because my wife has commandeered my kindle for the night so SHE can read it. (She loves Italy as much as I do, and is even pickier about the quality of the writing she reads.) Next trip, I'll be sure she doesn't forget HER Kindle!

First of all I will admit that I have read many books in the Travel Memoir genre, and most of those are about Italy. Within that small group, most authors will write about the beauty, food, architecture...all those things that we know Italy is already famous for-and the tales they tell are meant to seduce you and to make you want to visit. The approach Chris Harrison has taken is different. Yes, he talks about the beauty, architecture, and the food, but he also presents the gritty side of Italy. The side that only one who has lived there can understand and appreciate for what you can learn from it. The reader that will appreciate this book most is someone who has lived there for a short time as I have, or the British/Australian/American ex-pat who currently lives in Italy and has a love-hate relationship with the country. I have spent the winter in Milan and know just how dreary it can be there, but unlike Chris I also appreciate Milan for the hidden loveliness that can be found behind the pollution stained exterior of most buildings.Harrison also is brutally honest in writing about the discrimination between the North and the South of Italy, but tempering the ugly realities of that situation with a description of a wonderful, warm 'festa' that unites both North and South by the end of the book. I say BRAVO Chris Harrison for being able to put into words the feelings of so many of us that have lived there and tried to explain how Italy all at once frustrates and fascinates us.Lest this review seem too serious, I must say that I laughed out loud many times while reading this book-more so during the parts where he explains in detail his frustration with the government and bureaucracy as it does seem too ridiculous to be true...but it IS real life and humor is sometimes the only way to deal with that level of irony. An enjoyable read from cover to cover.

When Christopher Harrison (Crris Arrison with an H in front) met Daniela at a pub in Ireland, he was so taken with her southern Italian beauty that he moved to the heel of the boot to live with her. The book is nonfiction and many of the frustrations that he experienced (getting a work permit, dealing with the tax collectors, a drivers license and an overnight stay in the hospital) had me laughing out loud yet cringing at the thought of dealing with so much corruption and needless red tape. I also gained an insight into my own family as I saw the intractable stubbornness of my Sicilian father and my mother's obsession with "fare la bella figura" (making a proper showing) as being part of their Italian DNA.I am a lover of all things Italian but, as a tourist in the land of my grandparents, I never encountered life as Chris Harrison did. In spite of it all, the writer revealed the quirks and problems with Italy in such a way that his frustration with and simultaneous love of the country were apparent. I agree with another reviewer in that I enjoyed this book more than those written by Frances Mays as her books paint a glowing picture of Italy that can only be experienced by one who has enough money to smooth out the speed bumps along the way.Chris Harrison is a wonderful writer and I look forward to more books about his life with Daniela.

I love all of Italy. Its sameness and differences from region to region make it both interesting and challenging but always mesmerizing and fun. The author truly makes us feel the emotions of change, loving someone, and acceptance no matter where the experiences occur. The tale starts in the big northern city of of Milan, but he especially expresses how deep the roots go in a small southern Italy town where he tries to fit in while falling in love with his future wife, her family and the inhabitants. The transition is exasperating at times while being adventurous, amusing and ultimately more fulfilling than originally anticipated. This book makes me want to return once again to the wonderful towns south of Naples where the people, places, food, wine, and incredible geography warms the heart and mellows the soul. Bravo on telling this beautiful, true yet realistic story.

I bought this book because I was going to stay a week in Puglia and knew almost nothing about the area. This book is delightful! He falls in love with a girl from a small town, then comes back to be with her, living in southern Italy and Milan. His descriptions are very engaging and some of them made me laugh out loud, they were so good. This book made a nice companion to my trip, as his adventures with Daniela take him all over Puglia and also for a short while, to Milan. He writes with such affection--for Daniela and her family and friends, but also for Italy, with all its wonderfulness and its frustrations.

Review

"Combining history and romance, this book tells the story of one of the religious groups that traveled to the New World in the 1600s in search of freedom. With a focus on the workers of the printing press, the story follows the Okes family. Master Okes yearns to be able to print what he likes without the wrath of the king, and Rose, his daughter, must choose either the man her heart desires or the man who would give her a better life in the colonies." Often the story is too wordy and details are way more than the reader wants. As a 50 year Duxbury resident I gave it a shot. It is not great writing, but I found it entertaining

This is a well written novel which gave me a real feeling of what life was like for the pilgrims that lead to the decision to travel to the New World. I used Google Earth to "visit" the places in the novel. What fun.

The author is brilliant! So much research was done to describe this time period. You will fall in love with the characters.

"The historical accuracy and detail is unmatched, and provides an invaluable resource about the path of the people to the Mayflower. You will be transported to England and the Netherlands in the Golden Age of Dutch history, and experience the risk and trepidation of people forced to flee their homeland. Also reconciled are the many misconceptions of the "Pilgrims," such as always wearing black, and buckles on their hats and shoes. This is an important perspective never before explored in historic fiction." -Colleen

Before the Mayflower is a book with extraordinary writing, amazing character development and credible historical accuracy. It is a page turner that I couldn't lay down. As readers we are dropped into the turmoil of an important religious transformation that continues to shape our world. This world is presented with vibriant language, graphic scenes and dramatic flare. A true jewel not to be missed.
