Review

“This superb and exciting work of nonfiction would be a fine tonic for any jaded adolescent who thinks history is "boring." It's also an excellent primer for adult readers who may have forgotten, or never learned, the remarkable story of how nuclear weaponry was first imagined, invented and deployed--and of how an international arms race began well before there was such a thing as an atomic bomb.” ―The Wall Street Journal “A must-read…” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review “A superb tale of an era and an effort that forever changed our world.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review“[a] complicated thriller that intercuts action with the deftness of a Hollywood blockbuster.” ―Booklist “...reads like an international spy thriller, and that's the beauty of it.” ―School Library Journal, starred review“This is edge-of-the seat material that will resonate with YAs who clamor for true spy stories, and it will undoubtedly engross a cross-market audience of adults who dozed through the World War II unit in high school.” ―Bulletin of the Center of Children’s Books, starred review

BOMB was mentioned in a review of another book and I decided to order a hardback edition. When it arrived and I opened the package my first thought after looking at the cover, was, this is either going to be a very good, or a very bad book. I was delighted to discover it was a very good book.Having been involved with the nuclear weapons program with a high security clearance, assigned to the Defense Atomic Support Agency, Field Command at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM, and a person who has researched the Manhattan Project, later using my knowledge to write my first novel based upon the Soviet version of the Manhattan Project (the Soviet program has several names), I was delighted by the author’s attention to detail, ability to explain the program in an understandable and interesting manner, and his historical and technical accuracy. The Manhattan Project was in the 1940s the greatest engineering, scientific and manufacturing effort in the history of mankind. A program that made America the first real superpower, and something all Americans should be proud of.I will add a couple of facts the author may not have known. The Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima had a yield of 12-13 kilotons, not 20KT. The reason was pre-detonation, the fission reaction began as the U-235 “projectile” entered the U-235 “target rings,” reducing the yield. The Soviets detonated a 50 megaton weapon (the yield may have been greater) know as “Tsar Bomba” and the bomb detonated was scaled down from the designed yield of 100MT.The Soviet ability to penetrate the Manhattan Project illustrates how difficult it is to keep secrets—something true then and still true today.Written for school children, BOMB is a book anyone interested in American history, and the history of the Manhattan Project will enjoy.BOMB is an easy, insightful read, and I highly recommend it.

Our 8 year-old loves to read about many topics including history, science and technology; physics, and the elements and chemistry. (Like a lot of kids his age, he also likes the Wimpy Kid Series.) "Bomb" really makes history come ALIVE for him. Some of the Landmark Series books -- which go back to 1951 -- did the same for him. (I read them as kid and they did the same for me.) Our youngster also loves similar Landmark Series history books like "Bomb". Such as: "The Monitor and the Merrimack"; "The Sinking of the Bismarck"; and "The Story of Submarines".Available at Amazon. Bomb: The Race to Build - and steal - the World's Most Dangerous Weapon supplies some necessary history for teen readers primarily, yet any adult who has had the misfortune of spending periods of time under desks in grade school during air raid drills on Tuesday mornings will benefit from this read. The author does his research, moves the book at an appropriate speed, and weaves the names and events so that any lapses in reader interest are avoided. The book is written for young readers - nothing wrong with that - considering how ignorant present young people are about culture changing events. Pick up a copy: you can finish it in a couple of days and feel like you learned something about the dawn of the nuclear age.

I am in eighth grade and I think this book describes both the race to develop and use the atomic bomb perfectly. The main plot is about the discovery of fission and the making of the first atomic bomb and the ones that followed. It is also about the race between America, the Soviet Union, and Germany to finish constructing the atomic bomb as soon as possible in order to use it if there is a possible or definite threat from the other country or countries. The book is well written and is also full of suspense. The main characters in the novel are Robert Oppenheimer (a physicist who was in charge of the making of the first atomic bomb), Leslie Groves (an army general who was in charge of the entire Manhattan Project), Klaus Fuchs (a physicist who ended up spying for the Soviet Union), and Harry Gold (a chemist from Philadelphia who betrayed his country by giving top-secret information to the Soviets.) The main locations the novel takes place in are America, Japan, and Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe. The subplots talk about the scientists and physicists who were involved in the making of the atomic bomb and the ones who were also spies or were not spies but were accused of being a spy. The subplots also talk about the different locations where each bomb was tested. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in American history or physics (science.)

When a friend recommended this Young Adult book, I was a bit skeptical because it was a YA. However, I loved it so much I've recommended it to dozens of friends and family members. It is an excellent overview of the Manhattan Project and really gives great insight into the people involved, the scientific breakthroughs, the moral questions, and the spying that surrounded the whole process. In fact, the author does a great job hooking the reader by beginning with the spy activity at Los Alamos. I've read hundreds of WWII books, so I was surprised how well this covers the key points without getting bogged down in the science, politics, biographies, etc. Highly recommended for ANY AGE.

Great book and provides very useful information that we did not know before. It was on a recommended book list for my son, who is starting the 7th grade. As his father, I got the book for him. He enjoyed a lot and told me I should read it as well. I read it and enjoyed it as well, thus it is a very good book for both kids and adults!

Jenna and Flint...Jenna was hired as a nanny with special skills to care for an investigative reporter's children. When Jenna calls her ex-police partner for help protecting the kids from kidnappers, ex-army soldier Flint agrees to help. When Jenna and Flint meet, bear shifter Flint realizes Jenna is the mate he thought he'd never have. Now, he has to figure out how to keep them all alive. This story is a winner. It's action packed, suspenseful and full of great characters, including some familiar favorites. I'm really looking forward to reading more Bear Creek Protectors stories.

This book started out so good and full of promise. The first couple of chapters hooked me right in and was seriously heart pounding and then it started to fizzle for me. I really didn't feel much of a connection between the H and h. There was a lot of pages I started to just skim as they rode from one motel to another and then marched up the mountain, played in the snow with the kids and finally marched back down the mountain. The kids ate a lot of cookies in this book. I gave it 3 stars because of the exciting beginning, but the rest of the book was just barely a 2 star for me.

human-rights, trafficking, shifters, romanticBear shifter Flint retired from the army and joined the Bear Creek Bodyguards, Jenna was sworn to serve and protect until she chose to freelance for more money to pay for her niece's expensive medical care. At first glance Flint knew that she was his very long awaited mate, but Jenna came to understand that this gruff man was not only devoted to her but the children they were protecting. The bad guys eventually get caught and these good guys get to have the life they thought had passed them by.Excellent read!

Jenna runs with two children to escape a kidnapping. She meets up with Flint. Jenna is Flint fated mate. The characters in this story is a little older couple with graying hair that has given up on family being in their life. They are strong and able to keep the children safe until their mother is back to them. The storyline was interesting and exciting to read.

This story was great! It kept you waiting for the next exciting situation. I was on the edge of my seat waiting!!! I hope the next book is soon about Guy's happy ever after. Please keep them coming!

This is another great adventure showing shifter romance and protecting humans in danger. Ongoing weaving of characters from previous stories add to the richness of the story.

To meet the right person to be with forever is always a nice story. Throw in some bad guys and life gets interesting. Happy endings all around!

There is nothing like Bear Creek. The characters are like family, you can't wait to return to find out what has happened since you last visited. This book has Heroes, Heroines, suspense and of course love. Another great read.

Let me start by saying that the Percy Jackson series’ (both olympians and heroes of Olympus) are probably my favorite book series of all time. I’ve reread them countless times and gift them to anyone I know who is an avid reader.I was so excited for the graphic novels. And especially since this is book 4/5 it means we may actually get the complete set of this in graphic novel form. That being said... it’s a very watered down version of The Battle of the Labyrinth. Key plot points are skipped over or barely referenced. The one that grated me the most was the Calypso arc. It was very emotional for Percy to leave there and the bond the two of them developed was beautiful. Also, it plays a VERY important part in the heroes of Olympus series, so it may bite the publisher in the bud to have made that cut. It’s an enjoyable read, especially for a person who prefers graphic novels to print (no shame in that).

This book was NOT GOOD. The art was decent but did not portray the characters to their fullest potential. It cut important chunks of the story and even changed parts of it. I wish I had not spent my money on this.

Our grandchildren love this series much prefer the books to the DVD’s. They love it whenever another book comes out

I love the Percy Jackson books and this one translated into a great graphic novel!!!

Good book. Completing her graphic novel collection

I liked the art and draw, BUT! i didn't really liked the drawings when you see percy eyes from close, expect that it's good

My son has read it multiple times!!

Great read if u like mythology
