This is the worst textbook i have ever used. The explanations are poor if any are given and the examples are useless. Wouldve gotten a much better grade in the class had my profesor decided to use a different book. You can download it online if you need it for hw problems. From a starving student please use your 150 bucks more wisely on a different textbook.

One word describes this book; awful. This book was a waste of money. It does a terrible job in explaining topics, is very wordy, has very few examples and the ones it has, at not helpful in any way. The answers given at the back are very few and contain a lot of errors. Overall, this is garbage. Do not buy this book.

This book seems to cover the topics well. I look forward to reading more as I have more time. xx

it is elemntary surveying which I have not taken yet so I do not know how I feel. arrived on time.

This text was precisely what I had wanted. However, the spine of the book start to come a part after only a few months of using the book.

This book is an easy read. Helps understand basic concepts and procedures for surveying. I would recommend it to any beginning surveyor.

Lots of useful information for those who are beginning to learn about surveying. Some of the info might seem obsolete but it's still good to know a little bit about it

Over all the book was in decent conditions even though the pages were coming unattached from the cover, other than that it was fine.

A really terrific book. There are times where I would have liked more explanation of how Keating won the fights, particularly the 80's fights at conferences, a period where Keating won many internal battles to help modernise the Labor Party, sometimes they are described as if they were a fait-accompli where as I think an explanation of the tactics and messages he used to win what were real tough battles would have helped give a deeper understanding of what made Keating, Keating. However, this is nit-picking, in totality, this is a terrific book.Admittedly I am biased but I really do believe that Keating is such an inspiring figure, so unique in his personality, a personality combining epic self-belief, strong convictions and a faith in the intelligence of the Australian People that is combined with an apparent melancholy, delivers a subject that I believe it would be difficult to write an uninteresting book that has him as its subject. Having said that this book does a particularly good job of describing what motivates this complex and important man.The book does a great job of explaining what drove Keating to push forward with his reforming zeal in the face of political headwinds and a tough economic environment, in these times of politicians struggling to look further forward than the next Newspoll, to read about a political figure focused on long-term challenges and long term opportunities is really inspiring.Without falling prey to that most awful trope of modern political writing, the armchair psycho-analysis (a type of writing poisonous to modern poltical coverage that the likes of Mark Halperin & Maureen Dowd pioneered in America and that to her shame, Annabel Crabb has bought to Australian Journalism*) Troy does give us an insight into what drives Keating but more importantly and usefully he actually covers the policy areas that made Keating the important historical figure he is.This focus on policy then does a great job of explaining why Keating will be one of those few Prime Ministers who will be remembered 100 years after his time in office. His time in Treasury and The Lodge saw a fundamental re-ordering of the post-WW2 Australian Political Settlement and Bramston by focusing on Policy sprinkled with some focus on the political skills that were necessary to give him the power to push through the policy changes, helps describe the importance of the Keating era in a way that a lazy focus on personality never could. Finally and equally as importantly, unlike so much of what passes for political writing these days, particularly in the United States, Bramston doesn't rely on that most untrustworthy of things, the anonymous quote. Names are attached to all the important quotes and shared anecdotes in the book, lending a credibility to the work that would not exist if he was relying on 'Senior Labor Party figure' or 'powerful faction leader'. By not allowing cowards to hide behind anonymity Troy gives us insights that can be believed and shows that you can get a revealing portrait of a man and his time without allowing people to hide behind anonymity.A truly terrific work, you should buy this book if you are at all interested in how the Australian economy was opened up in the 80's and how the Australian Peoples view of themselves was challenged, expanded and given a new depth in the 1990's. The Keating era will be remembered long after many of his contemporaries and the politicians who preceded and followed him are long forgotten and this book will be an important work in not just the Keating Oeuvre but also a fantastic portrait of the era that Keating did not just exist within but did so much to help shape.

Excellent insights into the Hawke/Keating era and the significant changes introduced. It paints Keating as a man of his convictions and certainly he achieved things that most political leaders would shy away from. If you have an interest in the man and the era you will find this difficult to put down. Highly recommended.

The reason some people disliked Paul Keating was that he told it how it was and a lot can't handle that. This is how it should be .A pity all politicians cannot be like this. Keating could also see the " Big Picture" which most politicians cannot.

A must read about a far sighted person with a big picture view, clear economic goals, building industries, growing wealth, taking business, political parties, unions and people along a challenging path, with a competent leadership to deliver Australia to a higher standard of living and quality of life.

This book provided valuable insight to Paul Keating as a person, politician and above all, a leader.Very informative & well written.

Most interesting. Pity Paul was not a nice guy he would have been one of Australia's great Prime Ministers

Great treasurer; great prime minister; great book.

Paul Keating was Australia’s 24th Prime Minister, and held office from 20 December 1991 to 11 March 1996. He won office (from Bob Hawke) in a Labor Caucus ballot, and lost it (to John Howard) in a federal election. Paul Keating was Treasurer from 1983 to 1991. He was first elected to Parliament in 1969, aged 25.While a number of books have been written about Paul Keating, according to the book blurb, this is the first biography Paul Keating has co-operated on in more than two decades. Troy Bramston has drawn on around fifteen hours of interviews with Paul Keating, has had access to his personal files, and interviewed many people who know and worked with him. Troy Bramston has also had access to Labor archives and other records. All of this makes for a hefty 786-page book. There are biographical details, a chronology of Paul Keating’s political life, and snippets of the personal, but the primary focus is on leadership. It’s a book that I, as an admirer of Paul Keating and with a keen interest in Australian political history, had to read. Some twenty-one years after the end of the Keating government, it’s interesting to read about. The achievements I primarily remember from the Hawke/Keating years were the reform of the financial system and the economy, the floating of the dollar. While those reforms have undoubtedly benefitted Australia, many of us also remember a period of very high mortgage interest rates, of economic recession. But what I see as Paul Keating’s most important achievement was his speech in Redfern in December 1992, at the launch of Australia’s celebration of the 1993 International Year of the World’s Indigenous People. Especially this aspect:‘ .. the starting point might be to recognise that the problem starts with us non-Aboriginal Australians.’The passage of the Native Title Bill 1993, on 21 December 1993, is a credit to Paul Keating, Gareth Evans and the others who worked so tirelessly to make it happen.Paul Keating always had a vision for Australia’s future. He wasn’t always able to deliver on that vision, but he never stopped articulating it. I’d have liked more detail as to how Paul Keating did some of these things, in addition to the detail provided of what he actually did. Surely it wasn’t all intuitive and instinctive? Surely the structures of government were part of the delivery mechanism? And what about today? Where are the political visionaries today?‘Leadership is not about being popular, it is about being right and about being strong.’True. But I think it is also about being effective, about ensuring that the necessary mechanisms are in place so that they can outlast the individual leader.Whether you like Paul Keating or loathe him, it’s worth reading. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Australian politics, to anyone interested in political leadership.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Beautiful book, and terrific price!

This is a massive book and an amazing overview of the great work of Penn. Irving Penn had so many interests and styles with his photography which makes the execution of this book even more spectacular. They do a great job covering his major work: portraits, fashion, documentary and fine art. The book itself is very well done with great images and layouts. Every chapter opens with some background on his influences and a history of how the work was developed and received.Looking at other Penn books this book leaves out little and does a great job of giving us and in depth yet thorough look at his career. Shubin presents his arguments creatively and concisely, tackling sometimes profound questions about origins and evolution directly, even humorously.”—San Diego Union-Tribune “Shubin's hand, transformed from what was once a fishy fin, provides a powerful example of what evolution is capable of. . . . A deft synthesis.”—New Scientist “A delightful introduction to our skeletal structure, viscera and other vital parts. . . . [Shubin] is a warm and disarming guide.”—Los Angeles Times “With infectious enthusiasm, unfailing clarity, and laugh-out-loud humor, Neil Shubin has created a book on paleontology, genetics, genomics, and anatomy that is almost impossible to put down. In telling the story of why we are who we are, Shubin does more than show us our inner fish; he awakens and excites the inner scientist in us all.”—Pauline Chen, author of Final Exam “The antievolution crowd is always asking where the missing links in the descent of man are. Well, paleontologist Shubin actually discovered one. . . . A crackerjack comparative anatomist, he uses his find to launch a voyage of discovery about the evolutionary evidence we can readily see at hand. . . . Shubin relays all this exciting evidence and reasoning so clearly that no general-interest library should be without this book.”—Booklist (starred review) “A skillful writer, paleontologist Shubin conveys infectious enthusiasm. . . . Even readers with only a layperson’s knowledge of evolution will learn marvelous things about the unity of all organisms since the beginning of life.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Fish paleontologist Shubin illuminates the subject of evolution with humor and clarity in this compelling look at how the human body evolved into its present state. . . . Shubin moves smoothly through the anatomical spectrum. . . . [He] excels at explaining the science, making each discovery an adventure.”—Publishers Weekly “I was hooked from the first chapter of Your Inner Fish. Creationists will want this book banned because it presents irrefutable evidence for a transitional creature that set the stage for the journey from sea to land. This engaging book combines the excitement of discovery with the rigors of great scholarship to provide a convincing case of evolution from fish to man.”—Don Johanson, director, Institute of Human Origins; discoverer of “Lucy” “In this extraordinary book, Neil Shubin takes us on an epic expedition to arctic wastelands, where his team discovered amazing new fossil evidence of creatures that bridge the gap between fish and land-living animals. . . .With clarity and wit, Shubin shows us how exciting it is to be in the new age of discovery in evolutionary biology.”—Mike Novacek, author of Terra: Our 100 Million Year Ecosystem and the Threats That Now Put It at Risk "Cleverly weaving together adventures in paleontology with very accessible science, Neil Shubin reveals the many surprisingly deep connections between our anatomy and that of fish, reptiles, and other creatures. You will never look at your body in the same way again--examine, embrace, and exalt Your Inner Fish!"—Sean Carroll, author of The Making of Fittest and Endless Forms Most Beautiful "If you thought paleontology was all about Jurassic Park, take a look at this eye-opening book. Shubin takes us back 375 million years, to a time when a strange fish-like creature swam (or crawled) in shallow streams. Come along on this thrilling paleontological journey and learn how living things--including you--got to be what they are."—Richard Ellis, author of Encyclopedia of the Sea "The human story didn't start with the first bipeds; it began literally billions of years ago. In this easy-reading volume, Shubin shows us how to discover that long and fascinating history in the structure of our own bodies while weaving in a charming account of his own scientific journey. This is the ideal book for anyone who wants to explore beyond the usual anthropocentric account of human origins."—Ian Tattersall, curator, American Museum of Natural History

#13,000 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'll first give my take on the book then provide a brief summary. Author Neil Shubin is an awesome man and author. His personal anecdotes came at perfect times and flowed with the book in harmony. His writing style is congenial, conversational, humorous, candid, and i'd go as far to say inspirational. Prospective readers - especially those who aren't enthralled by evolution or anatomy - might predetermine the text as being bland and heavy. It's quite the opposite; I found myself laughing many times and perhaps the only weakness of the book is that it's too short. I personally enjoy shorter books because I enjoy delving into a few different topics a month. For only 200 pages there is a hell of a lot to learn and so much great information jam-packed in an easy-to-understand way. The author is an acute articulator, and has a good habit of recapitulating unfamiliar topics. This is an unconventional evolution book. Scientist Theodosius Dobzhansky once famously said "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution". This could have been the name of this book. Having read numerous evolution books before, I would have thought that attaining higher appreciation for it than I already have was an unattainable goal, but reading this book shattered that notion because my appreciation for evolution is substantially heightened. Nothing is more enlightening than finding out the truth of your existence up to your very faults. The book is split by 11 chapters. The first four explore the theme of how we can trace the same organ in different creatures. I'll briefly summarize:- Chapter 1-4:The author starts by describing his legendary trip to Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. He describes the struggles and the significance of his finding: The Tiktaalik; a creature from the late Devonian period (375 million years ago) that currently holds as the most well-established evolutionary transition from fish to amphibian. I've read about the Tiktaalik before in one of Dawkin's books, but I was surprised to find out that the author of this book actually discovered it. His expedition is a fascinating read in itself because the author is a great storyteller, and seems to be a really humble, laid-back, and fun guy. He all of the latter not only when sharing his personal experiences, but when speaking on behalf of his chosen subjects as well. He describes how he ended up near the arctic - and on the Pennsylvania highways - when looking for his fossils of choice. He gives a general introduction of where and how - using paleontology and evolution - you would find fossils. He elucidates the difference between fish and amphibian (through bone structure and limbs) and mammal and reptile. There's a chapter dedicated to teeth. Teeth are important and extremely helpful when identifying or distinguishing differences among animals (i.e. reptiles and mammals). There's a chapter dedicated limb structure, specifically the hand and arm. The developmental difference between our arms and a fish's fins are very similar early on in development but become vastly different through the process (inside the egg). The author explains why and shows experiments involving the relevant genes for such functions (those involving the ZPA tissue and Sonic Hedgehog gene manipulation, there's a chapter to this called "Handy Genes").- Chapter 5-11:In each one of these chapters, certain body parts of ours are to our distant ancestors. In other words, we get to explore, interpret, analyze, compare and contrast the our body functions with our distant ancestors. We figure out the inception of many body parts (and functions) and why they evolved to work the way they do for us. Specifically, there's a chapter on: the head, entire body, scent, vision, and ears. Some interesting stuff by chapter: In the field of Embryology, - the study of Embryos, or fetuses - we see that all animals are alike at their very initial gestation stage, with four little swellings called arches that develop around what comes to be the throat area. This is explained in more detail in the book but the fascinating thing is that these arches, depending on the species, all come to have a different but similar function in the body as the conception process gets underway. In the book, the example of comparison are humans and our very distant ancestor shark. Cranial nerve structure is also discussed and compared. Also discussed are headless animals - primitive ones - and the origins of our notochord. There's a whole section on the similarity of active (and inactive) genes among completely different specifies. What happens if you remove tissue, or add certain DNA strands in fruitful area? The evolution of scent is interesting because fish evolving to leave the water and thus become an amphibian, it requires major changes because there are 2 kinds of smelling genes: one for water and one for air. The chapter on scent is epic and so is the proceeding one on vision and then Hearing. We can trace major events in our eyes by analyzing certain eye genes that we share with other creatures. Mammals have the same ear bones as fish, the difference being that wish don't have ears. We come to see that there's major contrast between the functions of these bones for different groups of animals, like mammals and amphibians. These differences are part of why we label an animal to be a "mammal" or "amphibian" in the first place. Our middle ear bones are the malleus, incus and stapes. We come to see that the malleus and incus evolved from jawbones.Of the million years of life, Homo Sapiens have survived extinction and for the time being remain extant. But this doesn't mean that we don't have our problems. There's no preternatural creator ghost behind the complexity or susceptibility of our bodies, but even better: an evolutionary explanation of everything in our body from our genetic workings to our genotypes. Because of such primitive origins, our bodies aren't fully accustomed to certain things and thus thanks to our fish ancestors we develop things like hernias or hangovers. So why is this better then? For one, because it makes perfect sense! And two, by having a natural understanding of our anatomy, we can spearhead our way into the understanding of imperative issues - like disease or congenital defects - that shackle and sometimes terminate the life of many good individuals. This is very important, and so is this book. I'm grateful I read it.

Neil Shubin Stated:"We all know the Darwin fish, the car-bumper send-up of the Christian "ichthys" symbol, or Jesus fish. Unlike the Christian symbol, the Darwin fish has, you know, legs. Har har. But the Darwin fish isn't merely a clever joke; in effect, it contains a testable scientific prediction. If evolution is true, and if life on Earth originated in water, then there must have once been fish species possessing primitive limbs, which enabled them to spend some part of their lives on land. And these species, in turn, must be the ancestors of four-limbed, land-living vertebrates like us. SURE ENOUGH, IN 2004, SCIENTISTS FOUND ONE OF THOSE TRANSITIONAL SPECIES: TIKTAALIK ROSEAE, A 375 MILLION-YEAR-OLD DEVONIAN PERIOD SPECIMEN DISCOVERED IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC BY PALEONTOLOGIST NEIL SHUBIN AND HIS COLLEAGUES.TIKTAALIK, EXPLAINS SHUBIN ON THE LATEST EPISODE OF THE INQUIRING MINDS PODCAST, IS AN "ANATOMICAL MIX BETWEEN FISH AND A LAND-LIVING ANIMAL." -This fish crawled out of the water… AND INTO CREATIONISTS' NIGHTMARESSome 375 million years ago, Tiktaalik emerged onto land.TODAY, EXPLAINS PALEONTOLOGIST NEIL SHUBIN, WE'RE ALL WALKING AROUND IN MODIFIED FISH BODIES."SUMMARY: When a member of the Facebook history and current events website I manage posted this … I considered it a kind of mockery of evolution and written by someone with a limited knowledge of evolution. Since then I have discovered it is an authentic archaeological discovery … you can go to the Museum where it is kept and look at it with your own eyes and touch it if they would let you!Neil Shubin has written a very comprehensive book detailing his life as a palaeontologist and some of the very significant discoveries made in his classes in which he taught first year medical students in the dissembling of not animal but donated human bodies and his and their experiences in doing so with regard to what they discovered by the original functioning in what form at what time and the gradual evolution into human hands, forearms, upper arms, chest organs, stomach organs, and of course vertebrae, the neural system of the head and the human body’s intricate nervous system that allows movements of the head, eyes, arms and hands. This book is available in Amazon.com Kindle book and believe me when I say it is the most understandable, written for the public, in terms that the general public can understand, and with many examples, drawings, photograps and other graphic illustrations to help explain the details given by Dr Neil Shubin. It’s better than the “twilight zone,” “science-fiction,” and “watching the little girl and or Michael Jackson skipping down the yellow brick road” ! … Check it out for yourself! It is a fascinating experience for for those who haven’t been accustomed to reading and trying to understand the scientific origins of life and the universe. Harold L Carter / [...]

Not having a particularly strong scientific background, but interested in nature, I found this book to be approachable, enjoyable, and actually quite mind blowing! While I knew some of the basics of evolution, this book took my understanding to a whole different level. Skilfully weaving the realms of paleontology, anatomy and genetics the author explains how we came to be in our present form in a way that average people can understand. If you are interested in evolution in particular, or just nature in general, this is a book for you. Highly recommended!

Meg Cabot is a guaranteed good read! This book is fun and fast-paced. I love ghost stories and Ms. Cabot creates an interesting world where Suze is a "mediator" who gets ghosts to move on. To where she doesn't know, but she gets them out of the world of the living. Suze is a main character I can't wait to get back to. Thank goodness this is a series! I love the setting of Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Especially since Suze is from Manhattan. It's a nice fish out of water story where the outsider becomes the popular girl by being herself. All the characters are memorable from Suze's 3 stepbrother (Sleepy. Dopey, and Doc) to Jesse the ghost to Suze's friend's Adam and CeeCee. I can't wait to see what happens next!

This book was both my introduction in the Mediator series as well as my first book written by Meg Cabot. This book is what made me interested in writing as a profession. The novel opens with Suze moving to California after her mother remarries, and she suddenly has a super nice stepfather named Andy, and three stepbrothers who she nicknames Sleepy, Dopey, and Doc. But Suze isn't like normal girls, she is a mediator, she can see, speak to, and even interact physically with spirits who have not moved on.She isn't happy with this ability though, and finds that the house she moves into has a spirit of it's own, Jessie who died when the house was a boarding house over fifty years ago. Her house isn't the only place that houses spirits, the school she attends is haunted by a girl who died just recently, and she doesn't want to move on peacefully. It will take all of Suze's abilities to figure out how to get her to move on, whether she wants to or not,The writing style is easy to read and flows very well. It reads like it really is the thoughts of a teenage girl. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series.

When I read the description of this book I was a bit wary to buy it. It is obviously marketed for middle and high school students and it is an older book series with very little reviewers. Because it is the only book I have seen on Amazon with a solid 3+ star rating from everyone (and because I devoured the Pretty Little Liars books for the same target audience) I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was. I found it to be a sort of lighthearted combination between the Ghost Whisperer TV show and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I’m embarrassed to admit that although I am in my mid-twenties I still love watching reruns of the first couple seasons… can’t break a 16 year habit I guess). Shadowland is humorous and definitely kept me interested – I finished it in two short sessions. I only had three issues with the book that warranted a 4 star rating.I was a bit annoyed with Suze’s tendency to develop a crush on any guy that shows her the slightest bit of attention, living or dead. I know she is 16 but come on!The phrase “kick butt” was used waaaay too much. I understand it is a teen book and don’t want to advocate profanity, but I cannot take anyone who uses that phrase seriously and I thought it made her sound like a seven year old child, not the tough chick she claims to be. Considering worse words are used in overabundance, that I cannot say here because Amazon won't let me, I think the author could have matured the language a little or just found a new phrase to use. Another reviewer also mentioned her excessive use of “I mean” and wow, they were not kidding…Lastly, Suze names her new stepbrothers after 3 of the 7 dwarves and always refers to them by those names in her head. It got a bit confusing when their real names were used. She calls them the dwarf names on accident all the time and they never question it either. I just thought that was kind of weird lol I guess I’m just being nitpicky. These are just small things I thought about while reading the book, but nothing that would dissuade me from reading the book or liking it.If you’re sick of all of those overdramatic teen paranormal books and want something fun to read I suggest trying this book, if your pockets can allow it. They only take a few hours to read yet cost about $7 a pop unless you have prime or like to buy used books.
