Bought for a women's bible study group, but can also be done as an individual study. Lisa Harper is great, and I learned a lot from this study book.

I recently committed to do a bible study at the church I have been attending recently in John’s Creek Georgia. I have read passages in Hebrews from the bible, but I had never studied it in a bible study. Lisa Harper's Hebrews THE NEARNESS OF KING JESUS is the first study I have done with her. I gathered with a group of ladies that were also new to the church to begin this short six week bible study.I have featured other bible study teachers such as: Beth Moore, Elizabeth George, Jen Hatmaker, and Priscilla Shirer. So Lisa’s style is new to me. I found her teaching style to be humorous but also very pointed. The teaching seasons are brief lasting no longer than 30 to 40 minutes at the most. Some other teachers can last longer than that. I am not naming names here but if you have experience with these teachers then you know who I am talking about. The sessions cover various chapters of Hebrews. The structure is that Lisa would teach on in the video session Chapter 1 of Hebrews. Then the homework would be in Chapter 2 of Hebrews.The homework is short most weeks. The homework starts with her sharing a story with readers. Then a passage of scripture which is followed by a section titled Lean Into Scripture. This section focuses on the actual scriptures that will be focused on in the homework that week. The next section Live the Story Out Loud is where Lisa has four tasks that you can do as part of the homework. There are also articles about Hebrews at the end of the sessions as well. Participants can choose to read them or not. She includes links where the scriptures come from in case a participant wants to go deeper.My Thoughts:I enjoyed and learned a lot from this study. I have an enhanced appreciation for the book of Hebrews from the bible. I also learned what the book was trying to communicate to its audience of the time. Lisa is a good teacher and people will find entertaining. My only wish was that I would have had more time with the study. The study guide is written well with great points and humorous anecdotes.

Could not follow the train of thought in the study or the way it was presented. Only anke to get anout galf way through it.

I got this planner fast and in my favorite color. I love the indepth nature of the questions and morning routine stuff. However, I didn't realize there is NO CALENDAR in this at all? Brendon, is this intentional and what calendar do you use to go with your planner? I'm stumped with how to keep track of all of this in addition to keeping a calendar in a separate placeAlso, this isn't a complaint but just so you know for your next printing.. the ink was smudged in the first page! weird.

I enjoyed that there was not too much to fill in on a daily basis. I like to begin my day quickly and this gave me the opportunity to spend 10 minutes before my day began then, I had the rest of the day to be intentional. Great quality, it was bigger than I expected but I love it!

I love this planner!!! I was surprised at how in depth the questions are but after using it for a few weeks, I know this is something I will always use. The monthly view calendar comes *after* a given month’s daily pages. Makes no sense. Looks like the factory made a mistake and didn’t arrange the pages in the correct order. No biggie, it happens. Ended up returning it.

In this book, George Musser has made an attempt to introduce the concept of string theory to the masses; however, I don't think this "idiot's guide" really accomplishes that goal. Musser covers a wide range of topics in twenty-three bite size chapters of about ten to twelve pages each. I have found in chapter after chapter that the discussion is too superficial to really grasp the concepts discussed. If you think of the vast knowledge of this subject matter as being a large pond, this book will simply give you bits and pieces of information like a rock skimming across the surface of the pond. If you had no prior knowledge of the subject matter, I just think you would walk away with not much more that a smattering of facts and information, but no real depth of understanding. Of course, to be fair, this is a difficult subject to "translate" into the common vernacular so to speak, but I know some justice can be done to this feat. I know because I have read the books written by Brian Greene on the subject. For example, Green's book "The Elegant Universe" did a splendid job of presenting the concepts of string theory and the cosmos in a manner that allowed comprehension by the non-expert.Nevertheless, in his book, Musser touches on many subjects, such as relativity, quantum theory and the world of the small, the Standard Model, black holes, the big bang, time travel, gravitons, strings, loop quantum gravity, extra dimensions, parallel universes, symmetry, branes, testing string theory, and more. New terms introduced are defined in sidebars as are explanations of key ideas and concepts albeit tersely.If you can be content by a collection of "fast facts" on this subject matter, you will probably find this book satisfying.

I confess I'm still slogging through the first half. So much new Information. A very good feature, is how this writer refers you to other parts of the book both material already covered and material in later chapters. I really appreciate the short glossary in Appendix A which I usually ignored in the past. Also some good follow up info in Appendix B. Especially the information about Cosmology. This author also maintains a web site for errata plus some more resource links. When I finish George Musser's book I think I'll be prepared enough to tackle Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe" next. Maybe even dig out my old Hawkings book that I never finished.

The problem is I am not only a complete idiot but an under educated one too. I took math and physics at school and did OK but that was years ago. Never the less I am persevering because it is a fascinating subject and the book is well written.

I am always skeptical of physics for laypeople that avoids all the math. The math of string theory, however, is for experts only. Musser does a great job of explaining the lay of the land. He does not only string theory, but all the background needed to make sense of string theory. I do think string theory is seriously overhyped. It makes no testable predictions (as of yet).

Mostly the explanations are reasonably well written. However, it's not true for all the explanations given in the book, at least not for me. That is, when I have to re-read some explanation three times and still feeling unsure of the answer given in the book, I just have to move on.

Book Review (Amazon) Complete Idiot's Guide to String TheoryThis is a beautiful book, not only in its clarity but in its proper understanding that quanta are primary over particles.Yet it still tries to sell you on the idea that strings are physical, just as 19th century science tried to sell us on the concept that mind is physical. But, to get back to the controlling metaphor, IMHO just as we have minds, and our minds are primary (controlling) over our bodies, particles are controlled by quanta. Scientists so far have mixed the metaphor and have not been able to understand that quanta control particles, condemning strings to the physical world of the particle. So like Ponce de Leon, and his search for the fanciful fountain of youth, it seeks some fanciful solution to the "extra dimensions" necessary to explain particle activity in physical, rather than naturally in mental space. But in fact the "extra" dimensions are not hidden or curled up in physical dimensions, the extra dimensions, like all quanta, are mental and the extra, controlling dimensions are mental as well.-Ever since Hume, science has imprisoned us in the dark cave of materialism and blind empiricism and needs to restore us to the rational sunlight of plato (plotinus) -- see my website (...)or search in Google with a search term such as Clough platonic theory of mind Site: (...)

About the Author

Of inherited rebel blood, Michael Walsh’s father, Patrick, had fought in four conflicts before reaching his fortieth birthday. The North African and Middle East ports were also well known to him. He empathised well with the native peoples of Africa. Michael was perhaps one of the last to experience Africa as the novelist James Conrad would remember it. Following a maritime mishap the author spent a considerable time in the interior of the Belgian Congo. This was a period of internal conflict the brutality of which has few to equal it.

Once again Mike Walsh offers a title on a subject that I have been hungry to learn more about, and with his usual style of "just the facts from the source" , in this case first person accounts of the sad and painful fall of Rhodesia, he delivers. Though the message delivered is not for the faint of heart, accounts of terrorist butchery of innocent peoples, a stand down order given to the patriotic soldiers, and the betrayal of western governments will put you back in your chair with contemplation of your own future. Through Kissinger's pressure put on South Africa to isolates Rhodesia, the nation builders, no different from the stock that built the United States or Australia, where put out to pasture and forced to watch their nation crumble under the authoritative and revengeful black rule. Mike's book shows how the capitalist west and Communist Nations worked hand in hand to destroy sovereign European rule, which brought prosperity to every region of Africa they settled, and to replace it with chaotic exploitation. After reading this book one can not help but to see the parallels taking place in our First World nations today. Apart from all of that the thing that angered me the most is that this man cheapens the deaths of my friends and brothers to push his ridiculous ultra right wing fallacies. He has nothing to do with Rhodesia and I doubt he ever visited the place. He seems to think he has some claim of kinship with us because his father was IRA. We may have rebelled against Britain but many of us will support Britain any day over any other country or group.

Not value for money..

I lived 5 years in Rhodesia with my parents and went to school there. The author is factually correct. The negative reviews are probably from communists or socialists who refuse to acknowledge the unholy mess brought upon Africans by external political influence. Rhodesia, Angola where I was born, Mozambique, South West Africa, all were mere pawns in wider global geopolitics... Africa is too resource rich to be allowed to prosper on its own...
