From a historical and trivial perspective, this is an excellent book. However, the author is clearly a bit too enamored of his material and all objectivity flies out the window. (He shares this fanatical ideal with say, the Star Trek fans who say "There's no such thing as Bad Trek. Which is untrue). While doing his history of what I actually still consider a mostly lame Science Fiction series (but better than virtually anything Irwin Allen has ever produced), he spends far too much time damning Star Trek and claiming that later Star Treks used many of Space:1999's ideas. As a long time Science Fiction fan, I remember the 70's as a dead area of SF, watching Star Trek repeats and being less than enthralled by shows like this, the Fantastic Journey, The Starlost and Logan's Run, to name a few. It seems that networks felt just throwing the appellate of Science Fiction on a program would bring in viewers in droves - they were mistaken. While Mr. Muir's book is interesting at points, it's also quite annoying at others - he defends some of the lamest episodes (Black Sun) and ignores that one of the problems with Space:1999 is that there is very little Science in the Fiction. He complains about Trek's use of 'techno babble' and what fan hasn't been annoyed by this, the show tried to be based in Science. He also makes the outrageous claim that the battle in War Games (still trying to figure out how the Hawk fighters used SONIC weapons in space) is the most exciting hour of TV in SF. Guess he never got to see any of the Dominion War episodes of Deep Space Nine, or the Vorlon-Shadow's war? Or Farscape? For it's time I will agree with the author, that it did have excellent effects, but they can't begin to compare with today's. So overall, if the author had been a bit more objective, placing Space where it belongs, as a rather average Science Fiction show that promised more than it delivered, I'd have given this book a better review.

Although in need of updating (having been written even before 1999) especially in regards to the shows availablility in the home video market, the real value comes in the opinions of the author regarding each episode. Of course, an episode list and synopsis of those episodes are readily available without a book, especially now that we are in the 21st century.The author is obviously a huge fan, many of his observances and critiques of the episodes are quite interesting. He likes episodes I didn't, and of course the reverse is true as well, but he also explains why the episode succeeds or fails on emotional levels or perhaps because of excellent characterization even when it may or may not have had the best script.The main weakness in this concordance are the ad nauseum Star Trek comparisons. Over and over we have to read how this script seems like that one from Trek, either the original series or later on the Next Generation, or how this one did it first or this one did it better. Some of his observances are spot on, some come across as fan-boyish.I did laugh when he commented on how Space: 1999 in it's first season did not necessarily need to adhere to earth based scientific principles to tell a good story, and then immediately in the episode discussions opines about this scientific mistake or that one. He also spends too much time near the end of the book justifying how often the Alphans come close to habitable planets, comparing Star Trek's warp drive starship to the moon, and stating that only 40% of the episodes had a habitable planet compared to about 80% for Trek, ignoring that fact that the Enterprise travels to specific places at speeds several hundred times the speed of light compared to the moon's uncontrollable trajectory through space. He also spends a fair amount of time defending other's criticisms of the show, essentially saying if Space: 1999 is ridiculous, than all sci-fi shows are, and even at one point tries to debunk Isaac Asimov's infamous criticism of the show. (although Asimov wrote it immediately after the premier episode) He also counts the Eagles incorrectly, with one episode clearly stating there are 27 Eagles (the author claims 50) and the author claims that 18 were destroyed. (more like 24-25, with another dozen crashing)I am a fan of this show, and of Star Trek as well. Their fan bases are not necessarily mutually exclusive, nor are the shows particularly similar (well, except for what Frieberger incorporated when he stole some Star Trek bits) Both were under appreciated in their time, and are now considered flawed classics. Yes, for quite some time Space: 1999 was viewed as the redheaded stepchild of TV sci-fi, but that ship has since sailed.Enjoy the book for the episode critiques.

There is not much current being written about the series Space:1999, so this was a refreshing look at a television series long gone. Though this book is dated, being originally published in the mid 90's, it's full of teriffic reviews of the episodes, as well as behind the scenes info on the making of the series, and it's unfortunate demise. The author is also a fan of the show, so there is a bias in favor of the series, though the episode reviews are right on. Alot of conversation and debate about reviving the series. Will be interesting if one day the show actually does return. Highly recommended....

John Kenneith Muir "gets" the appeal of this series, which I had felt but couldn't put into words; in addition, he places it in the wider pop culture context of its day and since then. He makes the interesting case that the basic slant of the series (mistrusting of technology and government) was well ahead of its time. Fabulous book for fans of the series or for curious readers interested in a vital part of science fiction culture they may have missed or heard pilloried by its enemies.

I really enjoyed reading this book on the short-lived show, "Space:1999!" I have read the book,"Making of Space:1999," by another author. That book mostly covered season two and made it sound that the producer, Fred something, from the original Star Trek series did a great job - not! This book, "Exploring Space:1999," covers both season one and two wonderfully! I highly reccomend this for anyone that really is a big fan like myself. I would love to see a updated show called,"Alpha Beyond," where they settle on a planet and continue to survive with new characters that are "offspring" from the original characters. You could still have Nick Tate, and any surviving characters, as back up roles for the show as well. Perhaps even bring back "Kano", "Paul", and "Victor", as well. With "Space:1999" anything is possible.

Read this book the first time when I was 13. Now as an adult, I notice a lot wrong with it. Ross Coleman is a jerk for nearly the first 200 pages. He rapes Lydia after he vowed he wouldn't hurt her with the marriage convo. He goes on being generally unpleasant, spitting out cruel things such as calling her a sl* t and wh* re, white trash. She's angry about this because she's not any of those things. Lydia s stepbrother Clancey was physically abusive, and she even questioned if Ross was as ugly as Clancey, would she even like him? Even at the end, he believes Gentry, his dead wife's father over Lydia, whos pleading with Ross not to believe what the old man says. He goes right back to accusing her of being a wh* re.They claim to love one another at the end, but I don't see how they do. Ross is such a creep, Lydia is apparently perfect, but its just lust. Just unbelievable to me. I hate Ross, am glad I read he dies in second book. Two stars because though I dislike the book so much, the writing was very well done. And let me add here that the sex scenes were too much, not too descriptive but were written beautifully, and it goes on for pages. After awhile I just skimmed through how beautiful and seducing Lydia is and how masculine Ross is.

SUNSET EMBRACE by Sandra Brown is set in the 1870’s following the Civil War. The country was moving west by wagon train at the rate of 12 to 15 miles a day. The people on the trains were looking for a better life. Time passed slowly allowing them to get to know each other in a very special and protective way. Beautiful 20-year-old Lydia from Tennessee had recently suffered the loss of both parents and was fleeing from a cruel stepbrother, Clancy, who had impregnated her. When she could not go any farther, Lydia fell unconscious in the woods and delivered a stillborn baby. She was found bleeding and near death by a couple of young brothers, Luke and Bubba, from the wagon train. Lydia is nursed back to health by the boys’ mother, Ma Langtry, and her large family who are heading for Texas with the train. Ross Coleman, another member of the train has lost his young wife from child birth leaving him with an infant son. Ma arranges for Lydia, who has just given birth to wet-nurse Ross’ baby, Lee. Ross at first resents Lydia and thinks of her as trash but is soon attracted to her beauty, sensitivity and dedication to Lee. Brown develops her prime characters well and brings interesting secondary characters into the mix. The book becomes a bit boring in the middle but the ending is classic Brown—she keeps the reader on edge until the last page. Sandra Brown has produced another wonderful period novel. I give Sunset Embrace a 4-star rating.

Hard for me to stomach Ross and how cruelly he treats Lydia when she has done nothing but help him and his newborn baby. His preconceived notion that she was a prostitute despite all the signs that she was actually not seems to give him an excuse for bad-mouthing and manhandling this poor girl who was nothing but a victim of sexual abuse herself. Then he basically rapes her and she somehow manages to put that aside and begins to love him??? He never seems that sorry either for it. Just doesn't seem to be realistic and to be honest I don't think Ross even deserves her.

Another great Sandra Brown novel that immediately drew me in and kept me engaged. This is the first 'series' that I've found written by Sandra and I was not disappointed. I love her writing style and how her characters end up imprinted on my heart. The story is about Lydia and Ross and their journey on a wagon train headed for Texas. When their pasts eventually catch up with them, they are faced with some very difficult circumstances. In this particular book, I especially liked how Sandra included the inner thoughts of both Lydia and Ross, so I knew how they both felt about each other. This aspect created another dimension to the story for me. I wanted to shout at them sometimes. Definitely read this book before reading Another Dawn. I must admit that Sandra Brown has ruined me. I have trouble reading books by other authors because I have been spoiled by the way she can tell a story including romance and thriller in such a wonderful way.

I am generally a Sandra Brown fan. I have read 4 of her other books and thought each of those was very good. This book was not even in the same ball park as her other books (Envy, Deadline, Rainwater, Breath of Scandal). The reviews for Sunset Embrace were so excellent that I kept reading and reading, certain that it was going to get better. I found the lead characters to have absolutely no depth to them. Ross really doesn't display love for Lydia. He just lusts after her body in between jealous rages. The book would be 25% shorter if the author had not detailed every sexual act between the characters. I would have preferred a lot more story and a lot less sex. And it certainly would have helped to have a touch of charisma in the main character. I am so confused as to why so many readers loved this book!

Forget any desire you might ever have had to live in the days of the wild west and traveling across our great land in wagon trains and fighting off bad guys! Forget being a woman in that time!! I have read enough westerns to know the time after the Civil War was rough but Ms Brown paints her characters in such brilliant colors that you become one with them. To me, that is good writing. I ached for Lydia, felt ashamed for Colman and prayed for Lee.Those times came to life in Ms. Browns skillful hands. I never thought about crossing the Mississippi River in the Spring in a Conestoga wagon, or finding firewood out on the prairie, or what you used and cleaned for your "monthlies" if you were a woman. Very good read.NK

I chose the one star rating because I was beyond disgusted by the "hero" in the story. I believe it is OK to write about flawed characters, but this was taking it too far. For some reason it is OK for the "hero" to rape his wife and doesn't express much remorse for it and in response to it, the heroine does nothing. He was vindictive, and emotionally abusive in regards to how he treated and spoke to her. This isn't quality fiction. We as women shouldn't read this crap and find any entertainment or joy out of it. Shameful characters. Shameful book.

Thanks in part to The South American Table, by Maria Baez Kijac, South American food promises to become much more a part of the culinary landscape for North Americans. Kijac reminds readers just how many commonplace food products originated in South America: chocolate, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, hot peppers, and pineapple, to mention only some. Political developments influenced the evolution of South American cuisine after Columbus opened the continent to Europeans and the importation of Africans brought unusual reciprocity: South America gave Africa the cassava and sweet potatoes, and slaves introduced African tastes into the cooking of Brazil. One dish appearing in several South American cuisines, tamales differ from one part of the continent to another according to the sort of dough used to hold the filling. The familiar corn masa wrapped in cornhusks appears in Mexican cooking and in some parts of northern South America. But other versions call for potatoes, rice, or yucca, each worth sampling. Meat is critical to Argentine and Brazilian fare, and Kijac supplies marinades and instructions to reproduce these in northern climes. A glossary and a dictionary of ingredient names reflecting Spanish, Portuguese, and native terminologies helps clarify words. If you are interested in more than just a collection of recipes, this book is for your! The author gives a sweeping introduction to the geography, history, culture and foods of South America. I'm embarrassed to admit I know very little about this continent, so really enjoyed the introduction. Highly recommended to anyone who likes to know more about the origins of their recipes!

This book has so many things - historical info, personal anecdotes, food facts and authentic recipes. There are many recipes worth trying. From simple to more involved, there is a wide variety that showcases the flavors of the region. For someone new to South American culture and cooking this book is a perfect choice.

I have LOTS of cookbooks, and I cook all the time. At this point, it's rare that a cookbook isn't 2/3 variations on recipes I have in other cookbooks, I don't mind, it's just what happens when you have that many cookbooks, and actually read and use them...This book has all kinds of new recipes, and although I haven't tried many of them, they all look like they will work and be delicious. It's the same ingredients, but put together in different ways, with one or two new parings... I am so glad I bought the book, would recommend it highly.

This is a fantastic cookbook written over 15 years with accolades from Charlie Trotter. It has won many awards as the best South American cookbook ever. There is history of various regions and the recipes are easy to follow and organized perfectly. It is not a picture recipe book but that is not necessary in Maria’s complete explanations. A true treasure!

This book is way more than just the very best cook book of Latin American food...it's a short history of South America. From the time I opened it, I could not stop reading until I got to the end of the South America background information. I am from Venezuela and loved ALL the recipes. The lack of pictures is not a big deal at all, because the words are totally descriptive. Now that I have this book, I don't see the need for any other.

This was a great deal, the book was a good price, and it is in the condition they said it would be. The recipes look interesting too; no photos but I'm an experienced cook, after fifty years of cooking I should hope so...Anyway I will definitely order more from them.

I recently took this book out on loan from my local libary, but love it so much, I'm going to buy a copy for myself. I am half-Colombian and grew up in New York where South American cuisine, particularly Colombian, was plentiful (from homecooked, family meals to countless restaurants in Queens). I've been living in California for ten years and often long for an authentic sancocho, platanos, arepas, empanadas, aji piques, etc, but have never had any luck. Now, with these recipes and the wonderfully informative glossary of South American ingredients - and where to get them - I can make the meals I love so much myself and discover so many others. I especially enjoyed the brief history of the South American cuisine.

This has a really comprehensive introduction which explains Latin American regional differences in cooking based on the locally available resources and on the merging of preparation methods of old world and new world populations. The introduction alone is worth the price of the book.

Long but worthwhile. Very good information! I've read a few legal books like these and in comparison this one is easy to understand. I especially like to example true court cases.

Some parts are a little outdated due to recent changes in the laws, but overall this book, like most Nolo books, can make the difference between winning the battle or losing it. I haven't won my battle yet, but this book will keep me on the right path.
