How does one review of book of spiritual wisdom, except perhaps with gratitude? I did not come to this book as a very informed student of anything, I am just some guy. But I will say that the teachings in this book are very clearly rendered in English here (it seems to me), and I also wanted to put in a good word for the excellent explanatory commentaries which follow each of Patanjali's pithy aphorisms in this volume. They help to make the concepts very understandable to the average reader. Reading some of the other reviews of this book, you might be intimidated by some of the long Hindu names for things, but don't be... there aren't that many of them in here, and when there are, I feel they are all clearly dealt with. In short, I highly recommend this wonderful volume to the average reader. You don't need to be a scholar to delve into these powerful, accessible teachings, and there is much to learn.

Hard to find words... This is a wonderful and wise "unpacking" and light-shining exegesis of perhaps the most concise and accurate spiritual text we humans have. If you are the least bit curious about the Spirituality of India and the ways of meditation and the yogic tradition, read this. Then read the Bhagavad-Gita, then the Tao de Ching, then this again, then the Gita again and the Tao de Ching again. You won't regret it.

The are no shortage of works of wisdom translated into English from the vast trove of Eastern-language esoteric writings. But there is a dearth of material translated and written from the perspective of the modern western mindset. This book brings the unique perspective of Western thought and culture (not just translating in the context of Christianity) to its brilliant analogies and concise explanations of each verse...a true treasure of wisdom.

In about 1970 I was 12 years old, raised in So Cal, felt alienated from Christianity but desperately wanted some answers. Even though my parents were conservative midwesterners they had some hollywood friends that dabbled in eastern mysticism as any self respecting intellectual did in those days.I just happened to find this book stuck in the crack of the backseat of my fathers car one day. Took it home and read it and it just blew open the doors. Finally something that felt authentic and real in religion/mysticism. Thereafter I spent all my teen years studying yoga and meditation and read hundreds of books on the subject. But none I felt were as clear and compelling as this. I really loved the clear eyed understanding and writing style of Christopher Isherwood, and read a number of his other books.I'm so glad to see this is in print still and am about to download the Kindle version to re-familiarize myself. Obviously this book has had a more profound affect on my life than any other. The fact that it's still in print along with all the great reviews means it's probably aged well.

This is VERY close to the "meat" of the Yoga Sutras, taking into account consciousness, the "knower". The only thing it doesn't do - is teach the reader how to do first meditation, then sanyama, but neither can be learned by reading a book.

No book will ever reveal the secrets of the absolute. That can only be discovered through direct experience, and in that sense whoever seeks to know God by reading the book, and through intellectual understanding will always find something missing, no matter what book he reads.Patanjali Yoga Sutras point the way. They are divided in four chapters. The first chapter defines the goal - samadhi - the absorption into undifferentiated consciousness, and gives an idea of what it means to practice and experience yoga. The second chapter describes the practices which help to overcome the obstacles to full spiritual realization. The third chapter gives insight into different abilities that may arise through dedicated practice of yoga. And the fourth chapter describes the states of consciousness preceding the Self-realization and indications of the full spiritual liberation.The essence of the entire practice is - to know God, hold only God in your conscious awareness.Different commentators of Patanjali Yoga Sutra share different insights, so reading different version of Patanjali Yoga Sutra is helpful. Some commentaries may be clearer than others, and this one is very good, insofar that it uses simple language.

Wonderfully presented and clearly written. This book was a very enjoyable read and most informative. Anyone who reads this will gain much from it.

I must review for my son, since I bought these for him. He really loves the Mary Pope Osborne Magic Tree House books. He has struggled for aver a year with reading, and these books have helped tremendously with that. We have set a time before bed, and he reads for 30 minutes. He can't wait now to go to bed to read some more of these books! Also, his school is starting to read these so now he has a little advantage because he has already read them, and wants to read them again! I am so glad I bought these books for him.

Excellent starter books. My son came home from kindergarten one day asking if we could get some 'Jack and Annie' books. After some googling, I found out he meant the Magic Tree House books. Love that it's a low price for 4 books. They are a great length for my son (he's 6). I read them to him at bedtime, usually half and then the other half the next night. We've made it through these 4 and now we have to get more! I think they will be great once he starts reading more on his own. Compelling as well as informational.

These books are amazing. They offer a perspective of regions and culture from around the world. My five year old lives for these books! We read them every night before bed and she begs me to read just one more chapter each time. The adventures of Jack and Annie and the Magic Tree House bring us ancient times through time travel giving children the opportunity to learn about Greek pyramids, Rain forests, the aquatic life and much more with a fun spin to it. I HIGHLY recommend these books. They are great fun and great learning.

My 5 year old picked out the 5th book at a used book store for me to read to her. I knew it was a series, but I didn't realize the books are not stand alone. Argh! Imagine my surprise when we get to the end of the book only to find out we needed more to complete the story! Lesson learned. I will only be buying MTH books in sets from now on.I've read people complaining about the literary content. Come on! It's meant to be the first step in chapter books. You're not going to find spectacular literary merit.The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I wish they would go in and edit their educational facts when they reprint. It's a fictional, magic based book that supposedly has tid bits of fact thrown in. Problem is some of their facts are outdated so the historical educational value sort of goes out the window at that point.

This is the second Magic Tree House Boxed Set we've bought for our 7 year old son. He loves these books so much, this was our conversation last week."Hey mom, at our next house let's build a tree house""Ok, I think we can manage that""And fill it with BOOKS just like the Magic Tree House!"

Magic Tree House is a great series for beginning chapter books! The books range from 1-3 grade in reading level and are high interest for girls and boys. I bought this series for my daughter in the first grade. The chapters are short, the books not too thick, and the stories very engaging. There's an element of mystery and suspense. My 4th grader, though her reading level is now much higher than these books are labeled, still loves reading the series for fun. I would recommend these to read to preschool through kindergarten age children, and for independent reading for grades 1-5 (depending on the reading level of the child).

We have been reading these books to our five (almost 6) year old for a couple of months now and he really enjoys them. He can read on his own at a D/E level so these are a little too advanced for him to read alone but he LOVES having them read to him. He begs for me to read "just one more chapter" every night. Great story lines, simple enough for young kids to understand yet educational. The author isn't afraid to use big words which we like as parents. Our soon to be 4 year old wants to start "reading" them as well, but I'm not sure he has the attention span for it yet. Highly recommend!!

I read this to my 3 and 4 year old boys and they LOVED it. It's a little a repetitive, but I think that is probably best for young soon-to-be readers. I am a huge scifi and fantasy fan and I thought the stories were pretty compelling. The ninja story is particularly well done, with no violence, but a ton of action. On that note they might be a teeny bit scary for a 3 year old. There is a lot of suspense.

As usual Maxwell spins a fascinating tale. I was catching a few chapters here a few more there, thinking I was reading in my spare time . . . Shortly thereafter I noticed I was 82% finished, WoW! This books flows smoothly from the last book, hardly missing even a breath, no catch up no back story, those details were cleverly woven into this novel, I appreciate a great writer, storyteller . . . If you enjoy a bit of Fantasy I think you'll enjoy this 3rd installment of the Shifting Tides series. Now I have to wait for the next installment . . .

Darn it! This is Book 3 in the four book Shifting Tides young adult fantasy series. and Book 4 will not be published until next January. It is series that should be read in order. Not only do you need to learn about the worlds and past conflicts to understand the current conflicts, each book ends with the set up for the next book. Also, there are continuing characters who learn and grow. They discover new talents and suffer new wounds. We have two main protagonists, Chloe and Dion. Each of them is interesting and strong enough to carry their storyline this sweeping tale of the high seas, magic, heroes, villains, and war. Chloe continues in this volume as a strong young female protagonist. She is intelligent and resilient. She may be a princess, but she is not waiting to be rescued. Dion’s story picks up where it left off in the previous book. He is the new king after the death of his older brother. Chloe is believed dead in her home country and Dion’s. It is a good story, and it is told well. James Maxwell describes many different settings in excellent detail. It is lush. The book contains adventures, dangers, treachery, some violent images of attacks by fantasy creatures, warfare and torture, politics, and magic that is used for good and for evil. Once again, revenge is on the table. There is no graphic sex although there are is an unplanned pregnancy and hints of romance. I found it easy to get caught up in the story. It is a quick read. I feel certain that I will read the next one.

I just finished this book. It has been awhile since reading the first two so it took me longer to recall the characters, storyline,etc.OOPS! just looked back and read 1 & 2 at the beginning of the year. However when it all fell in place the book moved.I like all the characters the pace and the description of it all. This is a great series and it is fast moving. I have arleady pre-ordered book 4 and look forward to seeing how it all ends. I thought the story was going to end in this book so surprise it just dropped off the cliff.I recommend this series and the Evermen series to those who enjoy and epic story.

While a bit precipitous and sometimes lacking in details, this is a thrilling and entertaining read. It seems to skip steps sometimes, forcing actions and decisions sometimes unexpected in the sense that they seem to justify the fast pace rather than the narrative, making the story much shorter and straightforward than it could've been. In terms of storytelling, it seems more rushed than the first two books. Nevertheless, it was very captivating and not easy to put down. I enjoyed the adventure tremendously and am really looking forward to the conclusion and the fourth and final (?) of the materia: iron - symbol of fire and war.

If you can slog through the interminable pace, it's an okay novel. That includes reading through pages and pages and pages without any dialogue whatsoever.. obviously, a great deal of filler in this novel in preparation for the conclusion.

I got the first book in this series free—a canny promotion since I was hooked and couldn’t quit reading. The ending was all I could have wished, and in between there were exciting action scenes, several interwoven plots, numerous prophecies, many surprises, and wonderful characters who grew into their roles, leaned, and sometimes turned from evil to good paths. This book has heart, with redeemed villains and a compelling star-crossed love story that is resolved at last.

I enjoyed this book, it is well written and easy to read. I was disappointed that Dion did not simply attack that hunchback when he came to steal his fiancee. You don't cooperate with bullies, you kill them. Nothing good ever comes from placating them. I did enjoy the book and look forward to the next book in the series.

I liked the story and especially liked the Eldren. There are several different plots occurring that suddenly grab the reader and plunge you into the midst of ancient beliefs, customs, and cruelty. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes suspense, magic, and surprises.

For history buffs who know next to nothing about East Prussia this is one of the best and most comprehensive studies available in recent years. Very well written and sourced I finally began to get a complete picture of what life was really like in this region. The author who is not really a historian elaborated in detail of what this forgotten part of German was like prior to being annexed by the Soviet Union after the war. This book is also available on Kindle and well worth the read For those particularly interested in Konigsberg this book is a primer on the city and a good starting point for any student.

This was an interesting read before bedtime each night. Most of the stories related were excellent, but I soon tired of Agnes Miegel and her depressing life. The author apparently is enamored of the lady. I have never heard of her before reading this book, and do not care to hear anymore of her.The descriptions of the locales are excellent and the author paints a good 'word picture'.The maps and photos are good as is the index.I recommend the book to anyone interested in Eastern Europe.

Excellently woven historical account of (mostly) the upper class and culture of East Prussia. Then chronicles the destruction of this land and its peoples as a result of World War II. Also gives hope for a future for this region.Some sentence structure was difficult to read and had to be read twice to be understood.

This s a truly amazing book and will be fascinating to anyone interested in GermN and Eurooean 20th century history, , communist Easter Europe , the Soviet Union and now Russian relations. It is poetic, evocative, and insightful. East Prissia is indeed an forgotten and lost land and thus brings it and its people back to life. A great read and invaluable book.

A magnificent history of a part of Europe rarely discussed today. Thank goodness the author started his research in the early 1990's when at least the grandchildren of the great East Prussian estate families were alive. Though my wife and I have driven across Europe from Trondheim to Gibraltar, never did we think of East Prussia, so I was very glad to "see" it through this book.

Author provides a lot of valuable and unbiased insights into East Prussia's history. Great research effort! I'm now looking to find a simialr book that covers the rest of the former Prussia Provinces to include West Prussia. This book really held my attention and it was well written. 5 stars.

Detailed inside account of the fall of Prussia at the end of WW2 and the migration/escape of hundreds of thousands of Germans fleeing the Red Army by train,ship, and cart. For specialists a trove of details and names; for laymen a bit tedious but compelling in its documentation of loss and ruin among Prussians in what would soon become Poland - and the Soviet Union.

I am completely satisfied with this product. I listen to the Bible everyday in my car. Of course, The Word of God is food for my soul. The sound effects on the CDs are amazing. I did not realize the surround sound of my car speakers were so good. The other day while listening to a chapter in 1 Kings, I thought a lion was coming out of my driver side door, it startled me, then the sound of thunder caused me to look up at the sky to see if it was going to rain. This is a great experience.

I really wanted to listen and learn. However the background was too much for me to get through the stories. I return the book in audible.

I receivied the new testment a few years back as a gift. The first and last tracks on every disc are promotion tracks. The first time you hear the promotion track it is great: however way over done the 1st and last tracks become annoying at best.When I purchase the old testment same thing 1st and last track are promotional tracks still annoying. However in the old testament about every few tracks they have added music tracks from various people some who can not sing and just plain SSSSSSsssssscreaming in the mic.(YUCK) Plus the music and backround tracks can be annoying and sometime drown the information form the Bible, if that your thing okay but I find it a distraction from learning the word of GOD.Be ready to advance the tracks and the beginning and end of every disc, and in the old testment about every four tracks. Had a good product and screwed it up.Also if you put it on your computer all the disc and tracks read matthew matthew matthew both new and old testament. Hours of typing to straighten it out Track names and disc names ASCAP does not have correct information.

I had a copy and I bought the New Testament for my wife and she has been listening to it in her car as well as I thinking about buying a few more copies for my children I have three Young women in their 20s. And they all have a relationship with God. But I know they will get a lot out of CD's and I know it's not to replace the word the Bible but to enhance your experience with it.

The printing press is only a few hundred years old; Let us not forget that the bible and the word of God is an oral tradition. It is meant to be "heard". We have the text for greater accessibility, but that does very little if we don't read it.As a spoken word poet, this text comes alive. The score is perfect. Moreover, it has deepened my understanding of the kind of God we serve. This is a special project. Especially for those of you with long commutes, it makes me look forward to traffic to find out what happens next. Please check this out. It will not disappoint, especially for those who have trouble reading the bible. You will have a deeper understanding of the context when you read.

I have been trying to read the bible for years; I've tried many different strategies and was unsuccessful. I am so grateful for this format. To hear all my favorite actors read and project the emotions, the background sounds of animals and the crowds are great.The actors speak as if they are experiencing the events they are reenacting. I have a better understanding of the context of where most of the phases and exerts that I have heard of most of my life come from. I am more engaged in listening then I was in reading it myself. I would recommend this for the sheer entertainment value alone.

I enjoy getting the word on my way to work. The dramatic music makes it more interesting than someone just reading the word. I can recognize most of the stars by the sound of their voices and enjoy the representation of the biblical characters. This is good family listening. Now...some of the crowd rustlings are annoying. Once you hear them your mind can't ignore it.. And the recaps from the cd before is a good idea especially if you are not listening in one continuous sitting. That being said if you are listening in one sitting it's a bit long and makes you feel like didn't I just hear this? You are not crazy this is intentional. or at least I hope it is. All in all it's a good collection to have

Alan J. Marcus is a Professor of Finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His main research interests are in derivatives and securities markets. He is co-author (with Zvi Bodie and Alex Kane) of the texts Investments and Essentials of Investments. Professor Marcus has served as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. An excellent read. Just don't understand why the ebook is more expensive than the hard cover.

Perhaps you can imagine after paying almost $200 for a textbook that not having a code inside the book for Connect access was a big disappointment. All told McGraw Hill is into me almost $350 bucks for my grad course now and they had no concern whatsoever when I asked them about it. Do not buy unless money is no object.

If I had bought it a $200, I wouldn't have loved it so much, but I was able to get it for only $20 from collegestudenttextbooks. The textbook itself is great, explained all the concepts and even a layman like me was able to grasp everything!Recommend it
