This was a great guide for those of us who are big men. Much of what Mr. Centeno said is intuitive from looking carefully in a mirror and much of what he suggests I have already been doing, I have had a well-trimmed beard for many years, I have used braces on dress pants for ages, I have worn fedoras since early in college, and while I like clothes a tad loose and comfortable, I don't like them sloppy. Since the devil is in the details, I appreciated the detailed ideas and suggestions, some of which I hadn't thought about before such as the size of accessories, what is a good fabric for a suit, and wearing overalls for working. The other day I put on a watch I've had for more than 30 years, from when I was much smaller; it is a small watch and at my size now it looks like I'm wearing a woman's watch. I had forgotten about bibbers; I once intentionally bought a pair two sizes too big and they were the most comfortable things to use when working around the house or gardening or cleaning the garage. And they had lots of pockets! The two bits of advice I may ignore is regarding khakis and cuffs. One of the fundamentals in my wardrobe for the past forty years, since graduating from college, has been twill khaki chinos. I dress them up a half step with a white or light blue oxford cloth shirt with a button-down collar and dress them down a half a step with an indigo chambray shirt. My father knew of the practicality of twill chinos from his WWII Army uniform and this was reinforced for me as I was in one of the last groups to be issued twill khaki uniforms in the Air Force. My grandfathers wore cuffs, my father wore cuffs, I have always had cuffs on my suits and usually on my chinos. Some habits are too ingrained, or maybe too comfortable, to change. Finally, Mr. Centeno mentioned confidence when wearing a hat. While I am neither proud nor particularly happy about my size, neither am I ashamed of my size nor of who I am and when I walk down the street I stand tall with good posture. I think of a man like Orson Welles, who was by no means a small man, particularly in his later years, yet carried himself well. Mr. Centeno's good advice is all worthless if a man doesn't maintain good posture and stand tall and carry himself well, regardless his age or his size.
My husband was in the odd position of needing to buy a suit for a job interview, after years and years of not needing suits for work purposes. This interview is kind of a big deal, and he needed to look good.Purchasing this kindle book was a really good idea. It quickly covered the basics of things about men's style that we have needed to know but didn't. My husband is only overweight in the stomach area, but that radically changes how things like slacks fit, or how the suit coat buttons appropriately. The book covered important details like where the hem should be on suit slacks, where the waist should sit on someone with a larger belly, and where the sleeve hem should be on the suit coat -- all important information that makes the difference between a suit looking like it was bought off the rack and one that was altered to fit. It's worth the price of alteration, people!!! My husband's suit now looks great on him, and he looks fit and young in it.
This was a great "cliff's notes" guide for buying my new job interview outfit. There are plenty of useful tips that my internet researching didn't come up with. It's not without issues, though. I don't appreciate the constant reminders that big guys can look sloppy, lazy, and unintelligent. I'm well aware of that fact, thank you. Stick to the positives.I also didn't think the information was worth ten dollars. It's only a short cram guide with marginally-helpful illustrations. It felt thin and rushed without covering anything but the basics. I read it in about an hour.Because of the information I couldn't find elsewhere, I recommend it. But buy it discounted if you can.
Mr. Centeno, writes very vividly and offers timeless fashion advice for all men, not just big guys like me. I used to be a clothes horse before I put on 100 lbs. after I lost my parents. Thanks to Mr. Centeno's straightforward guide and non-sugar coated style, I can now dress like the man I am. Thanks Mr Centeno.
a short concise book. well written with easy to follow prescriptions of dress and the why of fashion. the author touchedon every major area of what a large man should wear to give an appearance of being in control and self assured. The only part of the book that was a little disappointing was the recommendations of places to buy a good wardrobe. After all I would think that men's departments in major stores like Dillards Joseph A Banks would be discussed. I feel all men would be aware that Wal-Mart is not a store worth spending time at looking for stylish wares.
I thought the authors did an excellent job of focusing on the unique style needs of large men. The tips were very practical and down to earth and easy to implement. It's really true that the "clothes make the man" -- and that is even more true for large men. By making a few strategic changes in your style choices, you can be perceived as a lot more professional and trustworthy. I highly recommend this book.
This is a good primer, and is well written, with easy to follow suggestions.Nothing really ground breaking, but does offer good sound advice on selecting and wearing clothes for those of us who are a bit fluffier. The suggestions follow traditional wisdom, and reinforce some old fashioned tools - such as suspenders over belts.Certainly worth a read, especially if you have let your fashion sense slip along with your waistline.

What you need to know is I LOVE THIS BOOK!I have quite a few cook books and none compare to this one. I use this at home as well as in the field. The amazing thing about this book is that it has something for EVERYONE...if you are a great cook already but need to know how much 'dry goods' and how to plan for a long trip in the outback, this has it. If you want to know about equipment...it has it.If you don't know how to set up or tear down camp, it has it. If you DON'T know how to cook, it breaks it down simply so that you're not overwhelmed with cooking jargon (which again it breaks down cooking jargon!). It is as simple and as complex as you want it or need it to be.Quite simply one of the best books ever written.....there is even humor strewn throughout it...not dry step by step only. ALL OF THIS AND IT IS A TINY ...TINY light book, again great for taking in the back woods with you for reference. When weight is at a premium people are doing crazy things like cuting their spoons and forks in half to save weight...this is a very light and small book. BUY IT, you'll love it like I do.
Nothing in this book that you can't get from internet. Dishes I tried were just so so. You can mostly useRegular recipes modified for taking camping and eat better.
Probably some great recipies for anyone looking to feast in the wild, but I was looking for some basic one burner meals.
as advertised.
I love this book. Great and simple recipes that result in great tasting food, great overview of the process, and great spirit. My family gave this to me for my birthday a couple of years ago so I would make something edible on our camping trips. Bland carbs are fine for me, but my wife is half Italian and that means she wants to ENJOY her food. The book sat for months and then one day I caved to the pressure to help with dinner at home by pulling out this book. Unlike your typical cook book, these recipes looked quite approachable, and there is a lot of fudge-factor because it is designed to be used on a camping trip, i.e., less risk. Boom; it worked. It was fun and adventurous. The apex was cooking my own turkey-jerky, somehow making me feel like Clint Eastwood, James Bond and Jerimiah Johnson all at once. Most importantly, it all checked out in the outback. Last weekend, for example, we backpacked for a couple days at Mammoth Cave National Park and my family ate Spanish Rice prepared under a tarp in the rain, delicious pancakes, incredible pizza, and on our last day we hiked out having been fueled by beautiful cinnimon roles made with yeast. Am I a man or what? I was surprised to see this book panned by a couple of other reviewers when I went to get the link for a friend, so I have now written what I think is my first Amazon review. Perhaps this book needs an open mind, which I think you need for rewarding camping. I actually first thought the book was not comprehensive enough, but have come to believe that it is a great treatment in a digestible (haw haw) form; not too overwhelming. It goes from very simple to somewhat intense, letting you choose. Somebody said they were looking for "dodgers." I bet the "Quest Bread" is actually the dodgers they were looking for, but with a more inspired name. Overall, this book strikes me as a great combination of simplicity, accessibility, creativity, usefulness, and fun.
I found this book very good. One of the best recipes is the pizza. It may be hard to believe you can make GOOD pizza in the bush, but I have cooked it numerous times for my family, and they ask for it everytime we camp out. The dessert recipes have been good as well. This is a good book for someone like me that is just learning how to cook good food out of what you carry on your back.
Was highly disapointed after reading the recipes in Backpacker Magazine and then not finding them, nor similar items in the book. I was impressed with and interested in hardtack and corn dodgers, which neither one appears in the book. Also, a more complete title of the book includes "Gourmet Cuisine", had I known that at the time I probably would not have orderd it. I just want to get by with the basics and do not care about a five star meal. I eat to live , not live to eat. James

Review
Library Journal– "When you encounter a weed, do you pull it, spray it―or consume it? Blair, a holistic health and sustainable living educator, recommends the latter. In the first few chapters of this title, she emphasizes the importance of wild plants as food and medicine. The remaining chapters profile 13 edible weeds commonly found worldwide near human habitations: amaranth, chickweed, clover, dandelion, dock, grass, knotweed, lambsquarter, mallow, mustard, plantain, purslane, and thistle. Many are frequently classified as noxious or invasive, but Blair encourages us to see them not as enemies to be eradicated but as allies to nourish body and spirit. Each profile includes botanical and common names, a description, photos, history, edible and medicinal uses, and recipes. All recipes are vegan and most are raw. Verdict: This book includes valuable information about identifying and using common weeds and encourages us to reconsider our relationship with these usually scorned plants.â€The New York Times- “How do we learn to empathize with other creatures, to respect the web of life that connects us all? The answer must lie, at least in part, somewhere in the deeply pleasurable childhood experiences so many gardeners cherish, moments of gazing into the depths of a blossom or watching a tendril unfold ― and falling under the spell of a tiny miracle. … Katrina Blair’s charming and intelligent The Wild Wisdom of Weeds … delivers just about the best argument I’ve read for the futility of figuring out what, exactly, qualifies as a native plant and why ‘invasive’ can be a flawed concept. …Weeds, she insists, are ‘examples of nature’s creative edge.’ They’re powerful ambassadors, here to support our quality of life.â€"For more than a decade, I have been learning about the outstanding value of common weeds as survival food, as free and natural “live" foods with nutritive values far exceeding those of store-bought greens, and as sources of natural medicines to help restore health to bodies robbed of their vitality by the toxins, stresses, and poor diets of our modern world. There are thousands of wild edible plants on our planet, most of which are unpleasant to eat and difficult to locate or identify. Many of us wonder where and how we might best begin to learn to find and use these wild edibles. Katrina Blair's The Wild Wisdom of Weeds is the perfect handbook for taking this journey back to better health, vitality, food security, and peace of mind, by learning to collect and use thirteen common nutritious and delicious wild weeds that grow pretty much everywhere that people live. It is a fantastic resource, and I highly recommend it! "--Matthew Stein, author of When Disaster Strikes and When Technology Fails"Required reading for the survival of our species! What can we do to live more sanely in an increasingly insane world? Katrina Blair offers a new world of possibilities. The myriad brilliant insights and pragmatic solutions within The Wild Wisdom of Weeds are essential and evolutionary.â€--Happy Oasis, Adventure Anthropologist, founder of Bliss U and the Raw Spirit Festival"The Wild Wisdom of Weeds provides a beautiful and empowering exploration of wild foods, helping you to identify, prepare and celebrate edible weeds that you might otherwise overlook with simple tips on medicinal use, and charming, nutrient-dense recipes. A must-have for any beginning or serious forager.â€--Jennifer McGruther, author of The Nourished Kitchen"This may be the most important book you will ever read. Far more than just a book about foraging; it offers, with comforting clarity, hope for the future of feeding the world when before there seemed to be none.â€--Nomi Shannon, RawGourmet.com "This is the kind of information that should precede gardening and farming. Katrina Blair expertly shows that before picking up a hoe or spreading a single seed, we can turn to our yards, fields and forests for so many of the foods and medicines we need to live well.   The Wild Wisdom of Weeds is a gem, and will be foundational reading for anyone wanting to live close to the goodness of this Earth.â€--Ben Falk, author of The Resilient Farm and Homestead“Katrina Blair keeps it really simple and approachable..her recipes have inspired me to experiment with new ingredients in my ferments.â€--Sandor Ellix Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation, from the foreword"Common weeds can be even more nutritious and medicinal than our favorite vegetables. Three cheers to Katrina Blair for sharing the depths of such friends as lambsquarter and purslane! Release your inner goat and go graze. Use these fantastic recipes to become an inspired gourmet of wild things. This book radiates with thorough research and first-hand knowledge of plants that matter.â€--Michael and Nancy Phillips, authors of The Herbalist’s Way and The Holistic Orchard“The Wild Wisdom of Weeds is one of those rare and important books that has the capacity to radically alter your view of a world you thought you knew well. You'll never look at weeds the same again!â€--Ben Hewitt, author of The Nourishing Homestead and The Town that Food Saved

I'm really torn on the number of stars to give this book! It's lovely, good quality slick paper, and exceptionally informative. It has great pictures. It's well written. And for all that, I have decided it merits 4 Stars. I withheld the 5th star because of something that I found troubling. It was my hope, in making this purchase, to find information on how to use these 13 essential plants that grow IN THE WILD for actual nutrition if I were OUT IN THE WILD .. somewhere, far from a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods or from California .. or from all the lovely ELECTRIC appliances which encourage our dependence in the whipping up of culinary treats with which to amaze our family and friends! There are, of course, a few recipes that would work, but MOST seem to be designed to accommodate a 'tossed-in-handful' of whatever wild green, simply for the sake of being able to say 'have a fresh slice of this Knotweed Bread' ... or 'try a bowl of this zesty Dandelion Ice Cream'!See what YOU think: here are the ingredients for the bread: the knotweed is incorporated with some oats, cashews, salt, coconut butter and honey. How likely are you going to be to have ready access to anything BUT the knotweed out on the trail? Baking is accomplished by drying in the sun for the day. Okay .. that works, but really... cashews and coconut butter in the wild??And here's the Dandelion Ice Cream: 3 avocados... THREE?! everyone carries these in the WILD, right? plus the same ingredients you'd use for lemonade. So, to me at least, it appears the dandelions are basically being added to what would otherwise be a tasty dish of 'lemon ice cream' .. and these are only two examples. I guess what I'm trying to say here, is that Ms Blair stopped somewhat short of what seemed to be her professed mission: she says, and I quote, "When we harvest our wild greens outside for our salads, we benefit in so many ways.." ... yet MANY OF THE INGREDIENTS IN HER RECIPES are those you will likely make a run to find at a grocery or health food store: miso, Turkish figs, cacao nibs, tahini, buckwheat groats, black sesame seeds, bananas, agave nectar, kalamata olives, vanilla. The rest you'll be able to manage from the full-fledged garden and orchard in your back yard! ;)The author has a lovely nature farm and a delightful restaurant that serves up delectable wild-greens-incorporated foods And she does tell you a great deal about both the nutritional and medicinal properties of these greens which can be found in every nook on the planet .. it's just that to incorporate them into recipes, you'll have to create your own or else be able to make use of them in your lovely suburban kitchen. If you have your own garden, if you're playing with weed identification, if your family enjoys your culinary experiments, then this book will give you many hours of pleasant reading, opportunities for experimentation, and perhaps some 'take away' for road trips and outings.
She does a fine job with descriptions and medicinal value of 13 plants that are every where and we don't even look at. This book is very interesting and it will be explored. She gives little rhymes so you can remember the facts about each plant in a more simplistic fashion.
This is a great book, and the book to start with if you want to learn wild edibles. The author focuses on 13 common edible "weeds" that grow pretty much everywhere, with a chapter detailing health and medicinal benefits, plus recipes for each. One thing about the author: she lives this stuff. It's obvious her book is a labor of love.As I've read the chapters in the book, I've tried to learn to identify the plants and implement them into my diet. I also had an horticulturist friend come over and show me some of the wild edibles growing in my backyard. Also an old-timer friend went up the nearby canyon with me and pointed out a different wild berries. Combining that knowledge with what I've learned from Katrina Blair, whenever I go walking around the neighborhood or hiking, even above 11,000', I see wild edibles everywhere and often eat them. Dandelion has become a welcome friend instead of an enemy to be eradicated. Knotweed I used to walk over and was 100% unaware of. Now it's a favorite. Mallow, purslane...I also recommend Samuel Thayer's The Forager's Harvest and Natures Garden. Great info on 2 other sets of wild edibles.
Disclaimer: I was raised in Idaho during the 70s, surrounded by hippies and California refugees, ergo, I speak (and can tolerate) fluent Flower Child; this book was written by one of them. *However*, put aside all the New-Agey "Gaia is my muse" stuff, and this is a straight up delicious book. In fact, I love it so much, I bought it twice--once in hardcopy, and once in Kindle, so it can travel with me.Filled with great recipes and botanical Wisdom, this book should be in every kitchen. You'll love it.
I've found all 13 of these weeds in my own neighborhood and have been experimenting with the recipes in the book. Who knew that thistle leaves made such a great juice! As a beginning forager, I was familiar with some of these plants, and I enjoyed the focus on identifying and using this group of 13.However, this book is about a lot more than foraging. Katrina has created all kinds of educational and service activities in her own community to change the perception of these neglected but valuable plants. The book presents her vision of how we can live well on the earth and have fun in the process. I would compare this to "The One Straw Revolution" by Masanobu Fukuoka, but with practical applications, and lots of hope for the future.
Katrina’s writing style flows beautifully. I am in awe and admiration of her extensive knowledge about weeds and their health and medical benefits. I had bought Katrina’s book after she guided a tour this summer and pointed out all the weeds that we try to eradicate and learned that they are our friends, not our enemies! While her book is packed with good information, I was hoping for a format that was more concise about the weeds themselves. This book focuses on her business and travels as much as it focuses on the weeds. I would love to see her produce perhaps a "companion" or "pocket" guide that (1) illustrates each weed, (2) states the best season(s) of the year to harvest them, and (3) lists, in "bullet" format, uses and health benefits of each. I'm not certain just how useful the existing format of this book will be as a reference for me.
I initially borrowed this book from the library, and found that I didn't want to do without it. It covers about 12 different edible weeds and I figure it will help keep me alive in a food shortage. It also has lists of medicinal uses and recipes, too. After reading it, (I didn't know a thing about weeds), I had the courage to forage in my backyard and discovered that these weeds are not only good for you, they can also taste good. Great book for the beginner!!

Review
This new graphic nonfiction series offers biographical treatments that highlight a technological breakthrough or innovation. Though produced by various illustrators, titles are visually similar: enticing covers, dynamic fonts, bold colors, and vibrant illustrations. Comic book-style word balloons feature fairly sophisticated vocabulary and occasional quotes or other primary source material. Each selection includes titled chapters, a table of contents, summary fact pages, further reading suggestions, and recommended Internet sites. There is close correlation between the dialogue and depicted actions and illustrations, which will provide visual reinforcement for struggling readers. These deceptively slim volumes convey a tremendous amount of information and vocabulary, and should attract attention from reluctant and enthusiastic readers alike. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. Recommended. --Library Media Connection; Vol. 25, No. 7; Pages 83-84, April 2007The Graphic Library series books are perfect for both boys and girls who want to learn in an interesting way. What child does not like learning from a book that is in graphic style? This particular book is part of the Inventions and Discoveries series. Today, we take it for grated with our cell phones and computers, that we can send and receive information in seconds. In the 1800 s when Morse s mother was ill, it took a letter a week to reach him, and he had no idea if she was still alive when he left to go 3,000 miles to see her. He became obsessed with the idea of using electricity as a means of conveying information at a fast rate and pursued this idea with great vigor. He was fortunate to live and see his Morse code and telegraph become two of America s greatest inventions. It is amazing how much information is given to the reader in just 32 pages. This book would be perfect in a classroom or school library. It also lends itself to the science and social studies classroom libraries. Graphic format makes it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own or for young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on. The full-color graphics make an enormous impact on the story. The author inserts a box on most pages that includes narration, giving extra facts to the reader to help with comprehension. Vocabulary has been well selected, and this book is an excellent resource that could be used for writing a summary, a book report, or a full research project. At the end of the book, the author includes more facts about Morse and the telegraph, a glossary, a list of internet sites, additional books for more information, and a bibliography. I highly recommend this book. --Childrens Literature Comprehensive Database, January 2007Finalist of the 2007 Distinguished Achievement Award --Association of Educational Publishers, June 2007

OK but missing the telegraph's first use coast to coast at Utah Transcontinental Rail Ceremony May 10 1869.Also more about American Experience implementing this invention, such as the Native Americans reaction cutting the wires and using copper for jewelry or the fact that laying the wires across territories actually made the railroad and major routes today connect. And the beginning of the 'stock broker' was really the telegraph worker tracking the lines....So the impact on the country as a megatechnology was understated. The first telegraph coast to coast to Washington DC from Utah and to San Francisco from Utah united the country EAST TO WEST at a time when NORTH TO SOUTH post civil war was weak and divided.Too much color on every page also need some white space to get through it. Lots of great content nonetheless as an invention.Art and science are much more connected in makerspaces these days, and the architecture layout of what the telegraph must have required, the challenges, and push to do this from Lincoln carried thru after his death. The contribution to the industrial revolution in finance and industry very understated. Also the required materials - copper- came from Great Lakes and that is forgotten too how that was center of universe for the early American entrepreneur.
I bought this for my child's elementary school presentation. It was written in a way that kept him interested while giving enough facts for a great presentation. He scored well, enjoyed reading it and learned a lot. In the age of text messaging and constant communication I feel like Samuel Morse should be more of a household name. Highly recommended.
They would be great if we were school kids in about 4th or 5th grade> I personally did not need all that information at 77 yes of age, if I would have known it was a comic book I would not have order it.
Came quickly and was a nice companion to the telegraph I also bought. Daughter loved. Lots of facts and good illustration.
My boys, ages 8 and 10, love reading about historical events with these books, which are more like graphic novels (comic books). The book manages to include all the important facts in a fun and entertaining way.
This is a history of Samuel Morse and the telegraph. It is presented as a graphic comic- which is great for the younger set! Kept my 9 year old son's attention- as we are working on his Science Fair project- and he was able to process the information in this book and understand it.
Informative text from start to finish.

From Publishers Weekly
One of 10,000 Jewish children sent to England by fearful parents at the dawn of WWII, aspiring pianist Lisa Jura was 14 when her family put her on a Kindertransport train in Vienna. In this alternately heart-wrenching and uplifting story, Jura's daughter, Golabek, a pianist, and writer Cohen trace the six years Jura spent in London, where she found surrogate families in the 31 other young refugees at the Willesden Lane hostel, and in the working-class British women at the East End garment factory that employed her. The authors beautifully capture Jura's passion for music and her determination to realize her dream of becoming a concert pianist. Her quest to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music seems to inject hope into everyone with whom she comes into contact: the hostel owner provides her with a piano and practice time, her housemates band together to drill her on technique and theory, and a co-worker makes her an audition outfit. Yet this is no Babes in Arms. Jura's struggle to hold herself together on the trip to England and as she makes a life for herself without the guidance of her beloved mother is as bleak as her musical successes are joyful. And the depictions of V-Day are especially vivid: rather than celebrate with the masses, Jura retreats to the hostel. The war may be over, but for her and her fellow young refugees waiting to learn the fate of their families, the tragedy will continue. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I met Mona in a coffeeshop. What a sweet lady! We talked for some time about how young people (my age 22 and younger) are seeing a trend of pop culture references that make light of the Holocaust and WWII. There are few survivors left, and someone needs to tell the stories the way they should be told, the way we should remember. Mona & Lee Cohen do exactly that in this book. They tell the heartfelt story of their mother Lisa Jura, based entirely on true stories and real people. Jura's family sent her to England as a young child on the Kindertransport, in hopes that she could use her brilliant talent as a pianist to make a life for herself. She had to leave her parents, sisters, friends, and neighbors behind. But despite her fears, loneliness, and confusion (why would the Nazis do this?), Lisa Jura always found a way to be thankful, polite, and appreciative of the good things in life. This is more than just a survival story; it's a story about how she and the other Jewish children refugees found ways to make their lives rich and meaningful in times when life didn't seem to make sense. This is a quick read -- in one sitting in case you get addicted, and can't put it down! -- and very uplifting. It reminds you to be thankful for what you've got, and not brood on what could have or would have been. It is not a depressing book, but it will bring tears to your eyes!I shared this book with family and friends, and everyone loves it so much that they've asked to buy their own copies. ***** FIVE STARS
I didn't know what to expect from this memoir-style book but ended up liking it very much. The real-life story of a young girl's escape from Nazi-occupied Vienna to the completely different world of London is compelling and touching. It's also informative about what life was like living in greater London during the heavy bombing. Kudos to the residents who "stayed calm and carried on." Such conditions are difficult to imagine.Lisa's determination is inspiring as she struggles to keep a promise made to her mother to continue her music studies. The lives of her closest friends in the refugee orphanage are also hinted at. They all served as a substitute family in place of the ones they left behind.I give it four stars instead of five only because the story is told second-hand. The author, Maya Golabek, is Lisa's daughter. She does a fine job of evoking the time and place and covering the major points of her mother's life. Still, it's always preferable to get such a story firsthand. But overall, this was an excellent book.
In what could be a depressing tale, the author shares the story of the Kindertransport in a personal and touching way that brings the story to life. Though I have read much about the victims of the Holocaust, this was the first I read of someone who was part of the transport which saved 10,000 children. A part of contemporary history that needs to continue to be told.
This book is another side of WWII. People are amazing in helping others in such difficult times and situations. May we all be so resilient and full of charity.
Have heard and read about the Kindertransport before but never the details of the lives led by the children once they got to England. The fact that they all survived is a blessing considering that most of their families perished. It was difficult to put down. I loved the way the children got along and helped each other. Also amazed at how helpful the English embraced and helped the children as much as they could.
A great book. I truly felt that I got to know these children who had no choice in leaving their families. Being brave enough to face the world without their parents guidance and having the drive to become successful. It was a wonderful heartfelt story. Looking forward to seeing the play "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" at Hartford Stage, CT in Spring 2015.
It was hard to read such inhumanity to man, but the sacrifice/love of parents for their children no matter how hard it was, was sole searching! The strength shown by Lisa and so many others was amazing...they didn't give up, even when they could have! I couldn't put the book down once I started. An excellent read for all ages...and it was true!
The Children of Willesden Lane is about some of the 10,000 children from the Kindertransport of 1938 - 1939. An absolutely excellent book that follows some of the children from 1938 through 1945. Much of the focus is on Bloomsbury House, which housed about 32 children from the transport. One of the authors of the book is Mona Golabek, the daughter of Lisa Jura, one of the children from the transport. This book has so much heartbreak, but also lots of joy. An excellent read.

My grandson loves these books and whenever scene one comes out I order it for him. He just turned 13.
I read this while I was in London myself… my mind was blown!! (This is an 11 year-old boy speaking) Plus I'm in middle school too sooo…… bonus! This book was amazing! If you are reading this review, I highly recommend this book! It will leave your brain watering (if that's such a thing) for the next book! I also highly recommend the other books, they're great too!
Gave to my grandson and he seemed genuinely pleased as he loves to read.
If you're a fan of the Middle School series this book will not disappoint. Join Rafe as he heads to England with his classmates and gets into his usual trouble.
