I'm liking it. I'm liking it a lot. In fact, I think it is going to majorly impact my life. Horsley's thesis is beyond ambitious. And very thorough. It is helping me more clearly understand WHY I have always felt so ill at ease among the Humatons. It gets very specific. It's comforting -- hugely. As well as illuminating. I am half way through, and already planning to read it a few more times.

Still reading this but I already know it's a book I'll want to have around. Something I'll definitely be coming back to. If you were one of those kids that was enchanted by the movie and still hold onto that "the way that things currently are could use some improvement" notion, then this book is for you.

"Matrix Warrior" is a manual for living the life of a seeker- someone not looking for little spiritual thrills, but radical liberation. Disguised as a pop culture tome, Horsley uses analogies from The Matrix and the literary works of Phillip K. Dick (a significant influence on the mythology of The Matrix) and the metaphysical storytelling of Carlos Castaneda to spin a battle plan for those who would wage war against the apparent world. The author suggests that people can be divided into four categories- "humatons", or those who are asleep, "matrix warriors", those who know that there is more to life than they've been offered, "matrix sorcerers", those who are no longer under the control of the matrix and able to manipulate it to some extent, and "lucids"- people, like Neo, who are totally liberated from the matrix. This book is about the first step- becoming a "matrix warrior", and preparing to take advantage of opportunities to "unplug"- those rare events in life when we are offered a way to radically change our circumstances and embrace a more authentic mode of being. Along the way, there are digressions on ethics, metaphysics, futurism, and many other topics. While the Castanedan influence is apparent, one uncredited (though obvious) influence is the work of Aleister Crowley, especially regarding the way of the will.There are some slight deficiencies- the author didn't seem to entirely "get" the later Matrix films- in fact, he doesn't seem to understand them at all (for a better grasp, listen to the commentary tracks on the DVDs themselves, where Cornel West and Ken Wilber spin an interesting glimpse at the deeper implications of the movies). But other than that quibble, "Matrix Warrior" is an excellent little book, and well worth your time... if you want to take the red pill, and find out how deep the rabbit hole goes...

Since I loved the basic thesis behind The Matrix that what we know as reality is just a computer program, I wanted to understand about the history behind this thesis. The Matrix Warrior does a good job at that. Horsley draws connections between the world of the movie and our own world and shows how the characters in the movie transcend the false reality the matrix imposes on humanity. Combining an in-depth examination of the film with philosophical inquiry and the teachings of Castandeda, Jake Horsley has produced in Matrix Warrior a profound yet witty analysis-and all readers need to get "unplugged." It is a VERY entertaining read if you are at all interested in the idea that there may be alternate realities.Horsley shows how "the One" is a concept in many faiths around the world. Anyone can be "the One" with enough enlightenment. The more important thing though, is to take the path of the matrix warrior. To search for reality. To be conscious of what you are "plugged" into and consciously "unplug" from the things you don't like. Too many of coast through life taking what comes. Being "the One" in large part involves asking the right questions, seeking answers, and deciding for yourself what your reality should be. Good advice for all of us, not just fanatics of the movie series.

However, there is a more powerful philosophical bent to this book that takes readers to the deeper meaning of what is reality. Jake Horsley makes a case that the movie could be real (are we someone else's dream/nightmare?) yet even more brilliantly interprets a metaphysical meaning of realistic pragmatism. Like The Matrix, he pleads with his audience to unplug themselves in search of the real inner person by discarding the masks of society and to stop being the source of energy for someone else.MATRIX WARRIOR is a one sitting easy to read work that is also a thought-provoking analysis of the movie yet is more at least in the reality of this reviewer. Mr. Horsley provides an interesting strongly supported theory that the underlying theme to The Matrix is to unplug oneself from the machines of society. There is no doubt that Mr. Horsley has done just that with this intriguing look at society through the spectrum of The Matrix movies. Editorial asides: (1) reality to this sixties lost soul of going unplugged is if this is all I received by being plugged I was cheated; (2) the middle picture was filler that needed more confrontation/debate between the Architect and the hero; and (3) Mr. Horsley owes a follow-up guide book once the third movie is unplugged. Readers who appreciate a theoretical look at reality (interesting phrasing) through a microcosmic analysis of The Matrix will enjoy this well written cerebral work.Harriet Klausner

Good detail, with street index but the print is way too small. Far more detail than you'd probably need, look for an alternative. Unfortunately, due to their fiscal crisis Lisbon does not mail maps upon request and online, downloadable maps leave a lot to be desired.

This book is a page turner! The author presents an intriguing and engaging memoir of her counterculture experience of communal living in Oregon in the 1970's. The story is rich with interesting people, relationships, and the imagery of day-to-day life in a hippie commune. A well told story and very satisfying read.

Free love, free food, make-your-own home with what we now call "repurposed" materials -- it's all in this book. Contemporary locavore, organic and "simple" life movements began here. The details are undoubtedly different from group to group, but Grundstein touches on the issues with vignettes and incisive musings from a "thirty years later" perspective. The roles of men and women in their community are especially telling, and Grundstein doesn't pull any punches when it comes to what became the division of labor among the genders. Having lived through their early missteps, Grundstein balances her idealism (still seemingly intact!) with the realities of life on a mountain with minimal utilities. The phrase "start by chopping the wood" will stay with me always now as I blithely wipe my hands on a clean towel after doing the dishes in my sink, provided with both hot and cold water. A fascinating look into a time and place of societal change and a truly engaging read.

This was a very well written personal history of this phenomenon. The author has a knack, and I would imaginewe could be hearing more from her in the future. I was about 6 when she was beginning to make these decisions,and this movement did end up helping to pave the way for the more mature development of self reliant living andthe very necessary questioning of the status quo which continues to go on today. Even though I would have lasted2 days in a place without structure, intention, showers and bathrooms, most anyone who has going through youthunderstands the power of human connection and camaraderie which held these folks together in the wilderness forso long. I also think the presence of all the drugs (on day to day living and productivity) could bear more examination.

Margaret Grundstein's Naked in the Woods is a loving yet unsentimental portrait of a place and time in history of monumental change and experimentation. Grundstein was on the front lines in the Sixties, living the utopian dream on a hippie commune in Oregon. She writes with the sharp eye of a photographer and the analytical mind of the urban planning student she was when she left East Coast academia for the forest. The photographs she took at the time illustrate the book beautifully. How could she and her band of friends, all twenty-somethings, live for over five years without electricity or plumbing or the support of their families or elders of any kind, isolated by miles of dirt roads deep in the woods? Grundstein tells us how. They chopped the wood to build the fire to heat the water to boil the diapers. They practiced free love and scavenged for free food and plowed the fields and slaughtered the chickens and often went hungry. Rural living set back the clock for women in many ways. It also taught the women of the commune how to survive. Grundstein writes with candor about the ethical dilemmas she and the others faced over the years. It's a fantastic, mind-blowing story told with direct, confident style, well-written, and ultimately universal.

Very interesting book, but I am a little bit confused. As the book went on they seemed to go from hippies to the dregs of society. Also, the hypocrisy was staggering in the fact that they wanted nothing to do with society outside their commune, but had no problem leaning on society in regards to financial aid(s), etc.Barring that, I found the book quite fascinating, but also sad because so many intellectual minds were wasted here, and also sad to know that there were thousands upon thousands of other minds wasted in this exact same was during the late 1960s’-early 1970’s.Also sad in the fact that they really believed that the hippie way of life was the true and correct path to go down, but, inevitably, it collapsed around them.I suppose that I really cannot judge any of them because I was born in 1975, way after all of the turmoil that these people were trying to escape from ended.I will say one thing, though………it would have been a helluva lot longer than 30 years before I ever visited ANY place Carol invited me to.....…

Oh, what a joy this book is! I stopped reading everything else and had to finish it. Well written first hand account of who and where I wished to be at that place in time....and I have to say that the many photos in the book left me wanting to see a hundred more! Fascinating account of survival on the ragged edge of society.Many fresh faced young adults like her entered the hippie culture and did not emerge to become hard working successful people but Margaret certainly did. Her grit, determination and intelligence served her well.

Book binding faulty. Entire sections of book fell out. It was a gift so no time to reorder for Christmas. It really doesn't even deserve 1 star.

First of all, I've really enjoyed this book so far. My reasons for purchasing it were to gain a better understanding of songwriting as a craft. There are lots of books out there (some of which I also own!) that go into the construction of a song, but usually only provide a few subpar examples of the technique in real life practice. This book is filled with excellent songs to use as examples for different ways to craft a song.I haven't found understanding this book terribly difficult, but there are a couple of techniques which could have used a bit more of an explanation. Particularly melodic/lyrical phrasing, as to me it appears there are several ways to break a phrase up. It's not very clear what guidlines the author uses regarding that.Even with some confusion, I've still found it very informative. I really wish there were more books just like it. I'd love to see this done with more modern bands as well.

As a songwriter and longtime fan of John Lennon, this is the best book I have found on his songs. I refer to it over and over. When I travel, it is one of the few books that finds its way into my backpack. An interesting analysis of 20+ Beatles era John Lennon songs. The highest praise I can offer the book is that I did honestly gain a greater understanding of the manner in which Lennon composed his songs. I did have trouble understanding some of the musical jargon Stevens used, though to his credit he explains most of the terminology he employs in the book in the first chapter. Most irritating to me were a couple of misquotes of Lennon's lyrics, numerous typos, and surprisingly (since this was written by a college professor) a number of usage errors. Worth buying if you're interested in this sort of thing. However, Alan W. Pollack's analysis of the ENTIRE official Beatles' canon is a far more informative, better written, and comprehensive look at Lennon's ouvre.

When I first found out about this book I thought it had a snowball's change in hell of being even a half decent book (being a pretty ambitious topic). I've changed my mind after actually reading the book, and found it to be an excellent introduction to writing a FPS game engine. Granted, it's not DOOM3 but the end result is a simple, complete working engine; which is quite an achievement in my opinion.One caveat though, even though the book is fairly simple and not exactly taxing (a tribute to the author) it is certainly not a beginners book. You should already be fairly comfortable with C++ and DirectX 9 to get the most out of it and be prepared to study the source and MSDN documentation (a good habit to get into anyway).The book covers most of the major parts of a FPS engine at a reasonable level, resulting in a well designed, modular engine that can be expanded on quite easily. The main value of the book, however, is the design of the engine which should help a lot in developing your own engine (since most books cover the therory in exhausting detail but ignore the overall engine design - if you're looking for detail, this may not be the book for you).After reading this book, the following books may be useful:1. Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 9.0 (excellent intro to DX9).2. 3D Game Engine Architecture : Engineering Real-Time Applications with Wild Magic (nice and detailed - I recommend all David Eberly's books).3. Real-Time Rendering (doesn't get better than this).4. Game Programming Gems (buy all of them, now).

I've enjoyed reading this book. It effectively shows you how to write a very basic first person shooter in directx. Well done. It briefly introduces rendering, a simple scripting system, peer-to-peer networking, handling user input, scene management, collision detection, sound effects, and more. Not bad. The code is fine, I had no problems compiling it in VS2005 (check the authors website for the latest code though) and I learned a lot from reading the book and going through the code. In short, I am glad to have bought and read this book and I do recommend it to others.The book does have some drawbacks though. I feel that the actual game that is built in this book is embarrasingly bad. The networking system, rendering system, user interface, and everything else about it are bare-bones functional, but certainly not good enough that you'd want to encorporate them into your own game. I suppose that the thought is that you should first learn to build a Yugo before you learn to build a Ferrari, but personally I'd rather just learn to build the ferrari right off the bat :) Oh, and why must the graphics suck so badly? I realize that it doesn't necessarily impact the goal of learning the various topics, but seriously, how hard would it have been to at least provide a decent character model, or some decent textures and lighting and so forth?One last thing. The book assumes a familiarity with C++ and to a lesser extent with Directx, so if you are brand new to either of those, the book will be pretty challenging to follow.

I love it

Disk that came with the book was defective. I guess that's what you get when you buy used. The book was actually in great shape, it seemed that it was new. But the disk was more important so my stepson informed me.

1st off, it uses Direct Play which is now deprecated. 2nd, Chapter 8 (which is the first mention of any networking - pg 188) opens by informing you that networking is a very large topic and could take up an entire book if not more. But they were willing to waste 188 pages on not teaching you networking. And then they teach you how to make something cutting edge if you travel back in time. Casual web searches will be more useful.

At my school we used this book for our networking class. (I had been begging our teacher to show us some directPlay stuff... yes, I'm aware that directPlay is ugh in terms of networking, but, it was a lot better than learning some java networking stuff. At least to me).This book was an invaluable tool for designing my networking system. I basically gutted this networking system and stacked on some variable size packets that I studied from one of the Lamothe (actual author:Todd Baron ) books. (weird book, guy talks about his exploits in ultimate online for like, almost a chapter before he goes on to explain about how you can hack the networking system for exploits.This book shows you how to implement a peer to peer network and then treat it like a server/client system. It's an interesting (I chose to just go strictly peer-to-peer in my system) approach. And I read in one of the Game Programming Gems a way to bypass some of the connectivity issues with peer to peer networks.Regardless, this book is an EXCELLENT study of networking for games. I read the networking chapter probably 20x during our project and it took me quite a while to figure out exactly what he was doing with it. In the end, it's a logical system that works fairly decently.We didn't use the rest of the code in the book too much. Some of the other people in my class modified the FPS game to do other things (made a shooting gallery, other's made some text based games on the networking code, etc).The source code is useful and there is an update available for it (his precious linked list had a memory leak in it... he really harps on about it).If you have never designed a game system before. This book is going to be a tremendous help. It teaches a bit about design patterns without all the unnecessary mumbo-jumbo, and how they directly relate to game programming and how they're useful (helloooo singleton).The code is in visual studio 6 I believe, and you have to set the default project to the actual project and not the engine to get it to run. Also, if your hardware doesn't support hardware vertex buffers (you have integrated graphics, we had a couple people on the team with this issue) you have to change one of the directX intializers to something else to account for this (can't remember the call now, look at some other directX init calls from somewhere else and you can find it).He goes into quite a bit of detail about each topic and the basics, and then delves down into the design of each system. It's very methodical and well thought out. AND YOU GET SOMETHING WORKING AT THE END!Do not get this book if:You are new to C++(you better have a CRYSTAL clear understanding of pointers and OOP, classes etc).You are not interested in engine design.You hate directX, or directPlay.You hate max; he uses 3dsMax to make the scene files etc.You are an industry professional that has a basic understanding of how a game engine works. This is definitely a n00b book.You expect to get your hand completely held at each step. He does skip over some details that are easily discovered if you delve a little into the MSDN or any other online resource.Get this book if:You are incredibly interesting in engine design and want to get your feet wet; as well as learn some engine design in the process.You're interested in any of the systems this book covers ( I can really only attest to the networking system, and that he uses directPlay, which is in sunset mode).Interested in basic modular programming and looking to expand the code in the book to meet your needs or to experiment with. It is an incredibly useful base to start with.Are extremely comfortable in c++/directX and are interested in expanding your knowledge and it's applications into games.Overall, the book was a good purchase and is an excellent stepping stone into engine design. It has been very useful in my future projects since I've used this book in my course work.
