I have a 14 yr old son who struggles to read. So when his high school assigned this book, I was concerned. His school does have read aloud in class, but this was summer reading that he had to get done.I decided we would do a read aloud at home each day. I totally enjoyed this with him. As we read each day with dedicated time set aside, we dove into this book. It was an easy book to get into and pulled into the characters. The book touched based on social issues of kids who have it all and then the kids who have nothing. Family issues of internal bullying, and learning what's really important no matter the cost of loved ones. Learning about heroes and who really is a hero. There's just so much in this book that anyone that went to a public/private school can relate to.Also, I loved the fact that each day I read aloud, my other children and even my husband became engrossed in the story. It gave us much to talk about and they looked forward to each day of reading time. Sometimes, we'd even run past our dedicated time. That was fine with me! I loved it! Oh and yes, this does have audible access, but there is something about reading aloud with your kids that builds a great opportunity to connect and discuss things that you normally don't get. The conversations were wonderful and insightful. If you are reading this for school, I did find some great graphic organizers out there that assisted my son, and those help keep him even more engaged and a much better retention of information with these organizers.
I just finished reading this book tonight. My 13 year-old grandson was assigned Tangerine to read in his 7th grade English class. He thanked the teacher for having them read it. He asked if I would read it and I did hesitatingly . . . I am a voracious reader, at least two or three books weekly and over 300 in the last two years. I didn't want to waste my time on a 7th grade book assignment. And then I thought, this book is/was important to him . . . I'm willing to read it.Wow, I cried, I laughed, I cried and laughed and cried some more. What a wonderful book for all teens to read . . . along with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family members. I learned so much about Tangerine and the plights of the area, but more importantly the plights of teenagers in their lives in today's world. A `normal' family (if there is such a thing) two children, one truly gifted and one was . . . well, I'm not going there and spoiling the whole wonderful experience you will have while you read it.I, like several other reviewers, can't resist recommending it to everyone I know. Including, but not limited to, a Purple Heart recipient and a Commander on a very large city police department; not to mention a doctor and several other healthcare givers along with all friends and acquaintances.I want to thank the teacher, personally, for her wonderful assignment of Tangerine, along with my grandson, who has the intelligence to know a good book when he reads it! I can't wait for our conversations to begin.Thank you Edward Bloor for a fantastic read, also Danny De Vito for your insight in your Introduction to this mesmerizing book.
My grandson read this book for one of his middle school classes and liked it so much he insisted that I should read it too. It's a story about how our personalities and actions are shaped by what we are told about ourselves and about the past. It also deals with how we can change when we learn that what we are told wasn't the way things really are/were.
Need this for 7th grade English. It's a classic for them. They haven't actually started it yet, but my son, who is in high school now, still has his marked up copy. He's done several purges of his shelves, but it is still there.Update-my daughter finished the book and quite enjoyed it. Her class had an online interview with the author, and she is said that there is not going to be a sequel.
I had no idea what to expect when I purchased this book - from its cover, I thought it may be some sort of Gaiman/Gorey-type of fantasy novel. This phenomenal tale of a middle-school aged boy and his family was one THE BEST fictional works I've read this year. This novel's numerous subjects - family dynamics, family secrets, sports/competition (in particular, the middle-school/high school/college/pro sports "track"/"rat race"/"money chase," social class disparities, pressures on middle-class families, economic disparities, work-ethic, the environment, school "pecking order, physical and mental health disabilities, etc. - all blend together to create a fascinating look at a slice of modern American life.I don't know if this book is supposed to be in the "young adult"/"pre-teen"/"high school" category - I DO know that this 55 year-old "card-carrying AARP member" thoroughly enjoyed it.
Truly impossible to put down. The reason this old lady loved the book? I taught high school for years and loved it! The book took me back and reminded me why teaching is the greatest job! They pay you to do what you would gladly volunteer to do.
I was taking turns reading this book with my grandson whom is in junior high. He could listen to the story and get some of his other work done too. After he took over in reading, I had to download the book and finish it for myself. The book reminded me of my childhood years. I like when the book picked up in pace in the middle and the end. It also provides good morals and hope if you feel bullied by a sibling. This book was good for all ages. It was a great story and touched me personally.

As the previous reviewer, I too love this author. I have her two other books and enjoy using them for their ease and simplicity and straightforwardness. I'm relatively new to this hobby and I need simple! I thought perhaps this book would be a lot of repeats of her other books and nothing much to hoot and holler about, but I went through it from cover to cover with my sticky tags and have almost 2 dozen ready to dig into of new and innovative recipes. She must have stayed up nights thinking about all the ways to expand our canning recipe horizons. I can't wait to get started again. I am going to first make some Boiled Cider Jelly bc I have some cider to use up. Then some Beet Ketchup caught my eye, bc I do not like cooked beets, I only like them shredded raw as in coleslaw. Beets are very healthy for you...and in this recipe, I could find myself eating more beets as a tasty ketchup. I also like how Marisa uses gram weights in her listing of ingredients bc when needing 2 1/2 cups of cut up onions, peppers, fruit, etc., the gram weight is also given so you are sure you are getting the amount you need. I just am funny that way, I really like the option of using a digital scale for some items since weight measurement gives consistent results jar after jar. Not only is it helpful for solid measuring, but she mentions that when measuring honey, maple syrup, agave, etc., it is easier to pour it directly into the pot to heat up instead of putting it in a measuring cup then scooping it out...we all know how we lose some of the contents that way and use a rubber spatula to get out every morsel. Bc she knows this, she wants to make even that user friendly, so she gives gram weights for those liquids too, you can pour it into the pot on a digital scale, and no scraping is needing. I really like the thoughtfulness involved in that simple gesture, it means a lot to those of us who want to save steps. She is a very organized person to do this, and being a teacher who labored over lesson plans each day to make a lesson more approachable to my students, she is doing the same exact thing for us. Most of the recipes are fruit items, some veggies, but very interesting ones you don't see a lot in other books. I wonder though if I could swap out maple syrup for honey for agave, for example; that wasn't mentioned in the book. Despite that one question I have, I can't say how happy I am that I got this book--her third book in a series--to me, a trifecta of canning recipes.UPDATE: April 2016: Made the Jalapeno Jam (really a relish), very good! Can be used to add to stir fries, omelets, chili, plain rice, etc.. I also made the Boiled Apple Cider, tasty. I used a little soft jelly to add to my plain Greek yogurt to give it some taste. I also made her Blueberry Glaze (forget the exact title of it), good for grilled meats, glazing meatloaf, etc...I made the tomatillo sauce for simmering and braising, had so many frozen from summer's bounty, and that worked out nicely too. I have more pages tagged to try!
Love this author! I have all her books and have made several yummy recipes in them. This latest book looks to be as good! Wonderful resource for those trying to cut out refined sugar and eat more naturally.
Marisa McClellan is an incredibly talented cook; she not only gives great directions but she has some of the most unique and delicious recipes I've made. Everything I produced was fabulous, simply by following her guidance. I really enjoyed the different flavors produced by using alternate sweetening sources- be aware, this is not for dieters, this is just a way to use other natural sweeteners to get unique results. I love this book and I love Ms. McClellan!
I highly recommend this book. The instructions are clear, the book laid out well and there are a variety of recipes to choose from without cane sugar. I have made the Smoky Apple BBQ sauce, and it is yummy. I have made the Cara Cara Orange Jam...divine, although it requires a bit of time to remove the pith. I have also made the Pear Vanilla Jam, which next time I will use a different kind of vanilla bean, instead of Bourbon. I look forward to this growing season to try so many more recipes, such as Spiced Blackberry Jam, Classic Sweet Pickle Relish, Pear Cardamom Jam, Strawberry Cocoa Jam, Peach Salsa, Cantaloupe Basil Jam, Lemony Strawberry Jam, Pickled Beets, Mango Lime Butter, and many more. I might even try the non-tomato ketchup. I hope she writes yet another book...one can’t have too many recipes to can without cane sugar and with non-tomato options.
I went to a cooking demo given by the author a couple weeks ago. She made the tomato jam recipe (page 40). We got to taste it at the end and it was SO GOOD. And it was really simple. So I bought the book and I can't wait to try more of the recipes. I like that there are so many unusual combinations of flavors: "Date Sweet Potato Butter", "Strawberry Cocoa Jam", "Rosemary Pickled Cherries", "Pear Cardomom Jam". I'm really excited about these recipes.
This is a great book for people looking to expand their canning knowledge and try something new. I enjoy all of books because I only have a very small family, and I made the mistake of making 12 pints of jam ONCE, and I still have peach jam coming out of my ears. Her books let me try something new without the worry of being stuck with a dozen jars of something terrible for the next five years.
Just having recipes to avoid all the processed sugar is a bonus. I own and use Marisa's other canning books and have had great success, so I'm looking forward to this season using her new book! I bought 2 and gave one as a gift.
Delicious recipes that think outside the box as always. If you are a canner, this is a good addition to your library.

Through a meticulous analysis, rich in archival research, Anne Parsons brilliantly illuminates the historical transformations in custodial confinement from the asylum to the prison over the period 1945 to 1985. Parsons unmasks the myths surrounding deinstitutionalization and reveals instead how prisons and correctional facilities filled the emptying spaces of mental hospitalization--providing the infrastructure for the carceral state of the late twentieth century. Anyone working on decarceration must read her haunting historical account.--Bernard E. Harcourt, Columbia UniversityAnne Parsons brilliantly unpacks a vital social justice issue of the past half century: how prisons became de facto sites of treatment for persons with severe psychiatric disabilities in the United States. As she shows, the over-incarceration of people with psychiatric disabilities stemmed in large part from the rapid growth of the U.S. penal system, leading to what she brilliantly calls a 'crisis of confinement.' Beautifully written and persuasively argued, Parsons takes readers on a quest that traverses time and place. Along the way, this book pushes readers to rethink many longstanding assumptions about the ways we as a society treat the most needy among us. It is required reading, indeed.--Jonathan M. Metzl, MD, PhD, author of Dying of WhitenessIn this compelling history of the transformation of psychiatric care in the United States, Parsons reveals the link between social-welfare contraction and the rise of mass incarceration in the second half of the twentieth century and sheds new light on the relationship between the 'rights revolution' and the triumph of neoliberalism.--Marisa Chappell, Oregon State UniversityImportant and timely, Parsons's analysis of postwar deinstitutionalization complicates and deepens the existing narratives about its causes, timing, and consequences.--Nancy Tomes, Stony Brook University

Asylums and prisons share a lot more common ground than most people realize. In this book, the author examines how politics, social upheavals, and fear politics combined over the years to alter prison and mental health policies. It seems we have always criminalized "abnormal" social behaviors, whether by committing people to asylums or locking them in prisons. These two systems fed off each other in a sort of see-saw pattern. And now, with asylums mostly gone, we have instead created mini asylums within prisons. Not much has really changed in 70 years, particularly for those living with severe mental illness. The information is laid out well, taken decade by decade, and the content is easy to follow. The writing style is matter-of-fact, more textbook than narrative. The style is probably too dry for the casual reader, being more suited for research and those of us wanting to understand the complexities of this topic.I was disappointed with the brevity. I pre-ordered this book months before the release, and I didn't pay attention to page count. Given the expanse of content, I was surprised to see how short this book is. Amazon lists the book as 240 pages. My hardcover is 211 pages. The epilogue ends on page 155, with the remaining pages being the appendix, acknowledgements, and notes. The first 19 pages are the introduction, which is essentially a summary of what you'll find in the book. So, really, the material is covered in only 136 pages. What the description doesn't say is that the author focuses mostly on the state of Pennsylvania and the city and statewide changes there. Parsons does at times mention other asylums and prisons in other states, but for the most part she holds up Pennsylvania as an example of what was happening nationwide.Despite my desire for broader and perhaps more detailed coverage, I still believe this is a book well worth reading. In our decades of flux from asylums to prisons, we have yet to stop criminalizing mental illness. Books like this force us to examine the truth of our system and our society.*As an aside, I want to mention that the font size used in the hardcover edition is smaller than average. The book took me quite a while to read because the small font strained my eyes, particularly at night when my eyes were already tired. If you have healthy, young eyes, this probably won't bother you. Otherwise, you might want to opt for the Kindle version.*
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in understanding what asylums were alike in the first half of the 20th century. The book is filled with all sorts of factual information. The author has put a tremendous amount of research into this writing. There is a footnote section that is replete with all sorts of information and factual documentation supporting the author's discussions. The book mentions an old story from a Time Life magazine article in 1946 titled "Bedlam" . This famous article exposed the horrors and mistreatment of patients, in various asylums, throughout the eastern United States, during the first half of the 20th century. The introduction starts off with a story about an African American man named George Elder. George refused to fight in WWII and was labeled a Conscientious Objector (CO) which was supposed to give a 5 year prison term. George Elder was sent to Byberry Hospital for over 5 times that long. He lost 29 years to the mental institution. This story about George Elder is a magazine article titled, "The Man the World Forgot ." It was very easy to find this because it is the very first footnote the author mentions. These footnotes allowed me to go and read that article, along with many others, as I progressed throughout the book.As I started chapter one I noticed the first discussion about a book written in 1946 titled "The Snake Pit" . Before even reading chapter one, I went and watched the movie. This book was a great inspiration for me to do my own research as I read a long. Again, the footnote section was put together very, very well. I know this author must have spent a lot of time putting together the notes. This makes this book a gem. This book discusses the deinstitutionalization of mental hospitals in America. The book discuss the transition from Asylums, (Mental Hospitals) to prisons between the 1940s and 1950's, when asylums, mental hospitals and sanitariums were increasing inpatients and hit their peak. The book also shows that In the 1960s asylum inpatient population went on the decline and prisons inmate numbers went on the incline (between 1960 and 1970.) The author does a great job describing this and chronicles all of the activities, including why this all was happening, and the dynamics that went into the transition. I have to give this book 5 stars. This is an excellent research book. Thank you Anne E. Parsons for providing such a wonderful record of the transition, "From Asylum to Prison".

There are obviously tons of memoirs about Italy because it's, well, it's Italy. From the first time I went, long ago, until now, I'm hooked on the country, and thus I've read many of those books about moving to Italy---and some are very good. But this one is exceptional. Maybe partly because I had (and still have) no idea who Chris Harrison is, Maybe partly because he's young, and not a retired academic or Brit. I am just knocked out with the quality of his writing, the keenness of his insights, and his wit. (Plus, it's a good love story that a man can enjoy.)If you like Italy, particularly the southern part, you'll really enjoy this book. I'd give it more stars if that were possible. But truthfully I haven't quite even finished the book, and that's because my wife has commandeered my kindle for the night so SHE can read it. (She loves Italy as much as I do, and is even pickier about the quality of the writing she reads.) Next trip, I'll be sure she doesn't forget HER Kindle!
First of all I will admit that I have read many books in the Travel Memoir genre, and most of those are about Italy. Within that small group, most authors will write about the beauty, food, architecture...all those things that we know Italy is already famous for-and the tales they tell are meant to seduce you and to make you want to visit. The approach Chris Harrison has taken is different. Yes, he talks about the beauty, architecture, and the food, but he also presents the gritty side of Italy. The side that only one who has lived there can understand and appreciate for what you can learn from it. The reader that will appreciate this book most is someone who has lived there for a short time as I have, or the British/Australian/American ex-pat who currently lives in Italy and has a love-hate relationship with the country. I have spent the winter in Milan and know just how dreary it can be there, but unlike Chris I also appreciate Milan for the hidden loveliness that can be found behind the pollution stained exterior of most buildings.Harrison also is brutally honest in writing about the discrimination between the North and the South of Italy, but tempering the ugly realities of that situation with a description of a wonderful, warm 'festa' that unites both North and South by the end of the book. I say BRAVO Chris Harrison for being able to put into words the feelings of so many of us that have lived there and tried to explain how Italy all at once frustrates and fascinates us.Lest this review seem too serious, I must say that I laughed out loud many times while reading this book-more so during the parts where he explains in detail his frustration with the government and bureaucracy as it does seem too ridiculous to be true...but it IS real life and humor is sometimes the only way to deal with that level of irony. An enjoyable read from cover to cover.
When Christopher Harrison (Crris Arrison with an H in front) met Daniela at a pub in Ireland, he was so taken with her southern Italian beauty that he moved to the heel of the boot to live with her. The book is nonfiction and many of the frustrations that he experienced (getting a work permit, dealing with the tax collectors, a drivers license and an overnight stay in the hospital) had me laughing out loud yet cringing at the thought of dealing with so much corruption and needless red tape. I also gained an insight into my own family as I saw the intractable stubbornness of my Sicilian father and my mother's obsession with "fare la bella figura" (making a proper showing) as being part of their Italian DNA.I am a lover of all things Italian but, as a tourist in the land of my grandparents, I never encountered life as Chris Harrison did. In spite of it all, the writer revealed the quirks and problems with Italy in such a way that his frustration with and simultaneous love of the country were apparent. I agree with another reviewer in that I enjoyed this book more than those written by Frances Mays as her books paint a glowing picture of Italy that can only be experienced by one who has enough money to smooth out the speed bumps along the way.Chris Harrison is a wonderful writer and I look forward to more books about his life with Daniela.
I love all of Italy. Its sameness and differences from region to region make it both interesting and challenging but always mesmerizing and fun. The author truly makes us feel the emotions of change, loving someone, and acceptance no matter where the experiences occur. The tale starts in the big northern city of of Milan, but he especially expresses how deep the roots go in a small southern Italy town where he tries to fit in while falling in love with his future wife, her family and the inhabitants. The transition is exasperating at times while being adventurous, amusing and ultimately more fulfilling than originally anticipated. This book makes me want to return once again to the wonderful towns south of Naples where the people, places, food, wine, and incredible geography warms the heart and mellows the soul. Bravo on telling this beautiful, true yet realistic story.
I bought this book because I was going to stay a week in Puglia and knew almost nothing about the area. This book is delightful! He falls in love with a girl from a small town, then comes back to be with her, living in southern Italy and Milan. His descriptions are very engaging and some of them made me laugh out loud, they were so good. This book made a nice companion to my trip, as his adventures with Daniela take him all over Puglia and also for a short while, to Milan. He writes with such affection--for Daniela and her family and friends, but also for Italy, with all its wonderfulness and its frustrations.

Review
"Combining history and romance, this book tells the story of one of the religious groups that traveled to the New World in the 1600s in search of freedom. With a focus on the workers of the printing press, the story follows the Okes family. Master Okes yearns to be able to print what he likes without the wrath of the king, and Rose, his daughter, must choose either the man her heart desires or the man who would give her a better life in the colonies." Often the story is too wordy and details are way more than the reader wants. As a 50 year Duxbury resident I gave it a shot. It is not great writing, but I found it entertaining
This is a well written novel which gave me a real feeling of what life was like for the pilgrims that lead to the decision to travel to the New World. I used Google Earth to "visit" the places in the novel. What fun.
The author is brilliant! So much research was done to describe this time period. You will fall in love with the characters.
"The historical accuracy and detail is unmatched, and provides an invaluable resource about the path of the people to the Mayflower. You will be transported to England and the Netherlands in the Golden Age of Dutch history, and experience the risk and trepidation of people forced to flee their homeland. Also reconciled are the many misconceptions of the "Pilgrims," such as always wearing black, and buckles on their hats and shoes. This is an important perspective never before explored in historic fiction." -Colleen
Before the Mayflower is a book with extraordinary writing, amazing character development and credible historical accuracy. It is a page turner that I couldn't lay down. As readers we are dropped into the turmoil of an important religious transformation that continues to shape our world. This world is presented with vibriant language, graphic scenes and dramatic flare. A true jewel not to be missed.
Great read!!! Highly recommend

How does one review of book of spiritual wisdom, except perhaps with gratitude? I did not come to this book as a very informed student of anything, I am just some guy. But I will say that the teachings in this book are very clearly rendered in English here (it seems to me), and I also wanted to put in a good word for the excellent explanatory commentaries which follow each of Patanjali's pithy aphorisms in this volume. They help to make the concepts very understandable to the average reader. Reading some of the other reviews of this book, you might be intimidated by some of the long Hindu names for things, but don't be... there aren't that many of them in here, and when there are, I feel they are all clearly dealt with. In short, I highly recommend this wonderful volume to the average reader. You don't need to be a scholar to delve into these powerful, accessible teachings, and there is much to learn.
Hard to find words... This is a wonderful and wise "unpacking" and light-shining exegesis of perhaps the most concise and accurate spiritual text we humans have. If you are the least bit curious about the Spirituality of India and the ways of meditation and the yogic tradition, read this. Then read the Bhagavad-Gita, then the Tao de Ching, then this again, then the Gita again and the Tao de Ching again. You won't regret it.
The are no shortage of works of wisdom translated into English from the vast trove of Eastern-language esoteric writings. But there is a dearth of material translated and written from the perspective of the modern western mindset. This book brings the unique perspective of Western thought and culture (not just translating in the context of Christianity) to its brilliant analogies and concise explanations of each verse...a true treasure of wisdom.
In about 1970 I was 12 years old, raised in So Cal, felt alienated from Christianity but desperately wanted some answers. Even though my parents were conservative midwesterners they had some hollywood friends that dabbled in eastern mysticism as any self respecting intellectual did in those days.I just happened to find this book stuck in the crack of the backseat of my fathers car one day. Took it home and read it and it just blew open the doors. Finally something that felt authentic and real in religion/mysticism. Thereafter I spent all my teen years studying yoga and meditation and read hundreds of books on the subject. But none I felt were as clear and compelling as this. I really loved the clear eyed understanding and writing style of Christopher Isherwood, and read a number of his other books.I'm so glad to see this is in print still and am about to download the Kindle version to re-familiarize myself. Obviously this book has had a more profound affect on my life than any other. The fact that it's still in print along with all the great reviews means it's probably aged well.
This is VERY close to the "meat" of the Yoga Sutras, taking into account consciousness, the "knower". The only thing it doesn't do - is teach the reader how to do first meditation, then sanyama, but neither can be learned by reading a book.
No book will ever reveal the secrets of the absolute. That can only be discovered through direct experience, and in that sense whoever seeks to know God by reading the book, and through intellectual understanding will always find something missing, no matter what book he reads.Patanjali Yoga Sutras point the way. They are divided in four chapters. The first chapter defines the goal - samadhi - the absorption into undifferentiated consciousness, and gives an idea of what it means to practice and experience yoga. The second chapter describes the practices which help to overcome the obstacles to full spiritual realization. The third chapter gives insight into different abilities that may arise through dedicated practice of yoga. And the fourth chapter describes the states of consciousness preceding the Self-realization and indications of the full spiritual liberation. The essence of the entire practice is - to know God, hold only God in your conscious awareness.Different commentators of Patanjali Yoga Sutra share different insights, so reading different version of Patanjali Yoga Sutra is helpful. Some commentaries may be clearer than others, and this one is very good, insofar that it uses simple language.
Wonderfully presented and clearly written. This book was a very enjoyable read and most informative. Anyone who reads this will gain much from it.
For those seekers who are interested in understanding LIBERATION, this is one of the most important books you can ever read.

I must review for my son, since I bought these for him. He really loves the Mary Pope Osborne Magic Tree House books. He has struggled for aver a year with reading, and these books have helped tremendously with that. We have set a time before bed, and he reads for 30 minutes. He can't wait now to go to bed to read some more of these books! Also, his school is starting to read these so now he has a little advantage because he has already read them, and wants to read them again! I am so glad I bought these books for him.
Excellent starter books. My son came home from kindergarten one day asking if we could get some 'Jack and Annie' books. After some googling, I found out he meant the Magic Tree House books. Love that it's a low price for 4 books. They are a great length for my son (he's 6). I read them to him at bedtime, usually half and then the other half the next night. We've made it through these 4 and now we have to get more! I think they will be great once he starts reading more on his own. Compelling as well as informational.
These books are amazing. They offer a perspective of regions and culture from around the world. My five year old lives for these books! We read them every night before bed and she begs me to read just one more chapter each time. The adventures of Jack and Annie and the Magic Tree House bring us ancient times through time travel giving children the opportunity to learn about Greek pyramids, Rain forests, the aquatic life and much more with a fun spin to it. I HIGHLY recommend these books. They are great fun and great learning.
My 5 year old picked out the 5th book at a used book store for me to read to her. I knew it was a series, but I didn't realize the books are not stand alone. Argh! Imagine my surprise when we get to the end of the book only to find out we needed more to complete the story! Lesson learned. I will only be buying MTH books in sets from now on.I've read people complaining about the literary content. Come on! It's meant to be the first step in chapter books. You're not going to find spectacular literary merit. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I wish they would go in and edit their educational facts when they reprint. It's a fictional, magic based book that supposedly has tid bits of fact thrown in. Problem is some of their facts are outdated so the historical educational value sort of goes out the window at that point.
This is the second Magic Tree House Boxed Set we've bought for our 7 year old son. He loves these books so much, this was our conversation last week."Hey mom, at our next house let's build a tree house""Ok, I think we can manage that""And fill it with BOOKS just like the Magic Tree House!"
Magic Tree House is a great series for beginning chapter books! The books range from 1-3 grade in reading level and are high interest for girls and boys. I bought this series for my daughter in the first grade. The chapters are short, the books not too thick, and the stories very engaging. There's an element of mystery and suspense. My 4th grader, though her reading level is now much higher than these books are labeled, still loves reading the series for fun. I would recommend these to read to preschool through kindergarten age children, and for independent reading for grades 1-5 (depending on the reading level of the child).
We have been reading these books to our five (almost 6) year old for a couple of months now and he really enjoys them. He can read on his own at a D/E level so these are a little too advanced for him to read alone but he LOVES having them read to him. He begs for me to read "just one more chapter" every night. Great story lines, simple enough for young kids to understand yet educational. The author isn't afraid to use big words which we like as parents. Our soon to be 4 year old wants to start "reading" them as well, but I'm not sure he has the attention span for it yet. Highly recommend!!
I read this to my 3 and 4 year old boys and they LOVED it. It's a little a repetitive, but I think that is probably best for young soon-to-be readers. I am a huge scifi and fantasy fan and I thought the stories were pretty compelling. The ninja story is particularly well done, with no violence, but a ton of action. On that note they might be a teeny bit scary for a 3 year old. There is a lot of suspense.
