A big disappointment. Most of the photos are black and white, which is a big negative for me. Also, for such a large book, a lot of the photos are small. Some are, for example, 1.5" x 2". The book does have floor plans, which I appreciate. It is a large book, but a lot of space is taken up by text in three languages and some pages have a lot of white space. It could have been so much better.

This book does a nice job laying out Neutra's houses over the years. The pictures could have been a little bigger, but I am not going to pick on that point. It is pretty complete in its breadth.What gets this volume only a 4 star review is the fact that Taschen chose to save money and instead of putting out three different volumes, (one English , one German, one French), they chose to put all three together in one volume!So what you have is a history which could have probably fit into half the amount of pages (and this is a monster volume) but instead is the size it is largely because there are 3 different accompanying texts for each and every building and house in the book. So imagine having a nice picture of one of Neutra's houses and then an English text describing it and then on the following page, two more texts in each accompanying language. This happens throughout the book and because of it I have taken out a star.I wish they would have pointed out this fact before I bought it.On the other hand, if you don't have this book and are a Neutra fan, you should probably buy it.

This book is huge and heavy and hard to hold, but is the ultimate collection of photos (mostly B/W) and descriptions of Neutra and his work. It's written in 3 languages, which means that a lot of the volume of the book (2/3 of the text) is wasted space, though the book is easily 50% photos. A detailed (roughly 15% of the book) nontechinical history, light bio, and analysis is included at the beginning, which is well written for a mass audience (ie, you dont need to be an architect to understand it). There is little to criticize. If you are reading the reviews for this book, that means you are looking for a book on Neutra specifically, and you aren't going to do much better than this.

If you like your books big and heavy, then this book will please you. It is definitely the biggest I've ever bought and putting it on a bookshelf is impossible. But what can you say about its contents. Thorough and complete. To have all of ones work in one book is ambitious, but when done properly, the result is a book which makes all others on the topic redundant. All of Neutra's projects are covered in this book in chronological order. From this you gain a greater perspective of his work, rather than the usual texts which show a few of his greatest hits and always leave you wanting more. One thing you gain from this book is how over a period of 40 or so years Neutra's basic design changed very little, yet was still appropriate to its time and setting. This book is a must have. Just watch your back, it is heavy!!

This is a great reference book for a fan of Richard Neutra's work. Every single built project is addressed. Most projects have narrative, pictures and floor plans. This book exceeded my expectations.

This book is awesome for a fan of 20th century architectural design. Even if you just enjoy good design, you'd appreciate the history and the photographs of this great master's work. The fact that the book is so oversized is a conversation piece in itself reflecting the treasure it holds inside. The cover is made out of actual hardwood, the text is written in English, German and French and most all the photographs are black and white. A true treasure for any collector.

"The 50th Law" by 50 Cent & Robert Greene is a unexpected hidden gem that is worth its weight in diamonds (as are the rest of Greene's books).The main idea of the book, "The 50th Law", is fearlessness. The authors details and conveys how to achieve this through ten chapters each centered around a principle or "law" if you will. 50 Cents life is used as the main template/reference for each principle (and the overarching fearlessness law). However Greene also makes use of other stories throughout history for this purpose as well.Overall I feel the book delivered on its purpose. It's able to convey it's lessons well through both story and reasoning. Also it's alot shorter and less textbooky than Greenes other books so that's a plus.Personally the book was inspiring. I of course had been a casual fan of 50 Cents music but I had no idea that behind the scenes was a man who overcame so much and intelligently clawed his way to the top.As for Greene this was my first book I read by him (well actually I'm reading it and The 48 Laws of Power at the same time). And it was so good that I read through it quickly and went out and bought all of Greenes other books.Greenes books paint a picture of reality as it is not as some want it to be. They give you the tools to protect yourself and thrive in the world. Honestly I feel like I've been given dynamite or the ten commandments after reading all his books. They are that powerful and good.So do I recommend this book? Absolutely for yourself and maybe your spouse or kids (so they can survive and thrive too). However I would advise you to not go around blabbing off about what you learned. When so many other people suck it makes it easier for you to stand out. A good magician never reveals their secerets.If you read this book also at minimum read the 48 Laws of Power. Also check out Greenes other books.

Anyone who may be under the mistaken assumption that this is just a "Hip Hop book" about a "rapper" (even slightly contradicting my own title) should change that perception right now. I am a fan of 50 cent as a rapper and business mogul, but Greene's work goes beyond that and even 50 Cent's own personal life as Curtis Jackson before becoming a rapper, to give you historical examples of everyone from Peter and Catherine the Great, to Niccolo Machiavelli, to Theolonius Monk, Moses, and Abraham Lincoln about how to accumulate and acquire personal power through leadership even in the face of fear and being willing to take risks instead of "passively aggressively" trying to get the things you want in society, which most people do. People may think that Greene's work promotes a kind of amorality or even worse a form of immorality, but I find that Robert Greene's work tends to have a strong moral backdrop, possibly with the exception of "Art of Seduction". In my opinion Greene's outlook may be that it is noble to have the goal of helping others, he even speaks highly of Lincoln's fight against slavery in this book, but your first moral obligation is to be able to help and empower yourself so then you can do things that will help and benefit others, but doing so on your specific and defined terms, that do not end up "helping others" and harming yourself, this is a lesson that can hurt to learn, even for myself, but you see it clearly over and over again, from business to interpersonal relationships, it's better to start off being a bit of an a%& and then become kind, than be kind and be full of resentment and frustration at life's challenges. Mr. Greene's treatise about fear and its fundamental causes is essential in today's world. If one looks at our society as a whole, and tries to look as deeply as possible, one can see that most of one's actions and those of others are made up of fear based choices. By that I mean, people often choose things based on fear and may not know or be fully aware of it. This book opened my eyes to my own fears and forced me to see what really frightens me. Now that I'm clear on those things, I have a better understanding of how to deal with or even eliminate these unnecessary emotions. This book taught me that fear is just something you experience when you're not really prepared for something that matters to you. Think about it.

This elegant approach, and its offshoots, such as theory, have been intensely developed over the past 12 years or so, and constitutes one of the triumphs of control theory. The theory provides a precise formulation and solution of the problem of synthesizing an output feedback compensator that minimizes the norm of a prescribed system transfer function. Many robust stabilization and performance problems can be cast in this formulation and there now exists effective, and fairly complete theory for control system synthesis subjected to perturbations, in the framework. The theory delivers an "optimal" feedback compensator for the system. Before such a compensator can be eployed in a physical (real-world) system it is natural to test its capabilities with regard to additional design criteria, not covered by the optimality criterion used. In particular the performance of any controller under real parameter uncertainty, as well as mixed parametric-unstructured uncertainty, is an issue which is vital to most control systems. However, optimal theory is incapable of providing a direct and nonconservative answer to this important question. The problem of robustness under parametric uncertainty received a shot in the arm in the form of Kharitonov's Theorem for interval polynomials, which appeared in the mid-1980's in the Western literature. It was originally published in 1978 in a Russian journal. With this surprising theorem the entire field of robust control under real parametric uncertainty came alive and it can be said that Kharitonov's Theorem is the most important occurrence in this area after the development of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. A significant development following Kharitonov's Theorem was the calculation, in 1985, by Soh, Berger and Dabke of the radius of the stability ball in the space of coefficients of a polynomial. From the mid-1980's rapid and spectacular developments have taken place in this field. As a result we now have a rigorous, coherent, and comprehensive theory to deal directly and effectively with real parameter uncertainty in control systems. This theory nicely complements the optimal theories as well as Classical Control and considerably extends the range of possibilities available to the control specialist. The main accomplishment of this theory is that it allows us to determine if a linear time invariant control system, containing several uncertain real parameters remains stable as the parameters vary over a set. This question can be answered in a precise manner, that is, nonconservatively, when the parameters appear linearly or multilinearly in the characteristic polynomial. In developing the solution to the above problem, several important control system design problems are answered. These are 1) the calculation of the real parametric stability margin, 2) the determination of stability and stability margins under mixed parametric and unstructured (norm-bounded or nonlinear) uncertainty 3) the evaluation of the worst case or robust performance measured in the norm, over a prescribed parametric uncertainty set and 4) the extension of classical design techniques involving Nyquist, Nichols and Bode plots and root-loci to systems containing several uncertain real parameters. These results are made possible because the theory developed provides built-in solutions to several extremal problems. It identifies apriori the critical subset of the uncertain parameter set over which stability or performance will be lost and thereby reduces to a very small set, usually points or lines, the parameters over which robustness must be verified. This built-in optimality of the parametric theory is its main strong point particularly from the point of view of applications. It allows us, for the first time, to devise methods to effectively carry out robust stability and performance analysis of control systems under parametric and mixed uncertainty. To balance this rather strong claim we point out that a significant deficiency of control theory at the present time is the lack of nonconservative synthesis methods to achieve robustness under parameter uncertainty. Nevertheless, even here the sharp analysis results obtained in the parametric framework can be exploited in conjunction with synthesis techniques developed in the framework to develop design techniques to partially cover this drawback. The objective of this book is to describe the parametric theory in a self-contained manner. The book is suitable for use as a graduate textbook and also for self-study. In accordance with our focus we do not develop any results in theory although some results from theory are used in the chapter on synthesis. In Chapter 0, which serves as an extension of this preface, we rapidly overview some basic aspects of control systems, uncertainty models and robustness issues. We also give a brief historical sketch of Control Theory, and then describe the contents of the rest of the chapters in some detail. The theory developed in the book is presented in mathematical language. The results described in these theorems and lemmas however are completely oriented towards control systems applications and in fact lead to effective algorithms and graphical displays for design and analysis. We have throughout included examples to illustrate the theory and indeed the reader who wants to avoid reading the proofs can understand the significance and utility of the results by reading through the examples. A MATLAB based software package, the Robust Parametric Control ToolBox, has been developed by the authors in collaboration with Samir Ahmad, our graduate student. It implements most of the theory presented in the book. In fact, all the examples and figures in this book have been generated by this ToolBox. We gratefully acknowledge Samir's dedication and help in the preparation of the numerical examples given in the book. A demonstration diskette illustrating this package is included with this book. There are so many mistakes in this edition. I really liked the 4th edition and was happy to get the 5th edition, but there are just way too many errors - formatting, spelling, grammar, and most importantly wrong medical information. It really seems like this book was not even edited at all.

A must have if you're hoping for even a remote chance of scoring well on the USMLE Step 1. Ed Goljan is not only brilliant himself, but he's a genius when it comes to transferring the information from his head to yours. And he helps you UNDERSTAND the material, not just memorize. Please use in conjunction with his audio. You will ace the exam if you want to, just utilize your resources appropriately. Also he's my friend's uncle and he is a really good arm wrestler.

The Legendary Dr. Goljan Returns! This is an ABSOLUTE must have for any Medical Student! This book is terrific! This can be used in your core courses or preparing for Step 1. This book covers it all very well, and Dr. Goljan explains everything very simply. The quick notes on the margins help a ton if you just need a quick refresh, or are short on time. The practice questions that come along with the book are terrific also!No one beats Dr. Goljan, he is a LEGEND in the medical community for a reason. His sources, updated pictures and graphics are terrific. This is a book I will carry with me throughout the rest of my medical career!

Apparently this is the book of all books in medical school. After skimming through it, I can see why. I am going to have a deep relationship with this book. It is highly detailed and highly condensed with all the high yield material and more. I will be using this book along with my classes from day one of medical school. Really good book for a "Review" of pathology ( a lot of detail). I used this Goljan Rapid Review in my basic sciences and now I will be definitely using it again to study for my step 1. It contains high yield photographs and margin notes which are a quick review of you need to know note. An excellent addition to my step 1 studying material. This book was recommended by one of my professors and I would not agree more.

While it doesn't cover every potential USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 topic (definitely look into Level/Step 2 material), Goljan does distill the vast majority of the covered first/second year topics into a series of no-nonsense pathological/clinical pearls. With this book (and his audio series shhhhhh... SDN it...med students, you know what I'm talking about...), First Aid, Pathoma (book and videos), micro/pharmcards (if you're weak in those areas), and, if you're a DO, Savarse OMT, you will be BEYOND ready for boards. Currently first year medical student. This book is great for an overview of major concepts and could be used as a preview to upcoming lectures. Though when studying and comparing details to class materials, the book doesn’t go into all fine details. I also find it does a fine job of stating board relevant, and finger tip facts, but does come up a tad short of clear explanations on “why” for some complicated disease processes. I’d buy it again for sure, but still looking for a dynamic duo to pair it with.

I am in love with this book. So much info and I really like how the author highlights important facts in the margin. I feel the information is comprehensive when I compare it to some of my other study tools. I highly recommend.
