Great reading from a thin volume. A few years ago, I chanced upon Firestone's "The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes: How a Stone-Age Comet Changed the Course of World Culture". I was excited by the evidence that a comet impact had devastated much of North America, and brought about the Younger Dryas Ice Age. As scientific institutions would have it, skeptical geologists denied the theory, based on assumptions that the Carolina Bay formations did not fit the expected patterns of extraterrestrial impact craters. Enter Antonio Zamora and the Glacier Ice Impact Hypothesis. His research, as summarized in this book (thick pamphlet), revives and revitalizes a theory which had been left for dead. The writing is excellent. Each sentence and paragraph contains information to support the author's theory, or to convey concepts new to the non-specialist. His presentation and organization are most appealing to me, personally. The only question I have about the theory is about the comet's ability to ignite wild fires over a third of the continent. However, even the author questions the role of fire in the event, suggesting that the Clovis People may have set fires as part of their hunting strategy. Needless to say, I really like this book!

In this short (but high impact;) book, several studies examining the Carolina Bays and the younger dryas cold period are brought together and then unified with the addition the authors’ original theory on the mechanics of Bay formation. Zamora’s unique perspective enables him to explain in laymen’s terms, the stunning world wide effects of a North American bolide impact in the not so distant past.

The last chapter of this book is the most incredible thing I have ever read. The chapters leading up to that are scientific but still somewhat interesting. Graham Hancock led me to this book in one of his presentations, excellent work... though we still don’t know what melted the glaciers after the younger dryas, was it a solar flare perhaps?

Not sure that I agree with the premise of a comet that hit that we cannot find any evidence of except the Carolina Bays. The premise is that a comet hit the ice sheet causing chucks of ice to carve out the Bays but not leaving any evidence in Canada since it did not penetrate the ice sheet.

The Carolina Bays are unremarkable landscape features of the Eastern U.S. that show up again as the rainwater lakes in Nebraska. The land in between was likely covered with them as well but have been destroyed by farming, erosion, and general civilization. However, they only existed on soft soil, not on hardpack or rock. Over a half million are visible from space using special photography, and the guess is that several times that number once existed. So how were these elliptical depressions formed? There have been many theories, but "Killer Comet" makes the claim that a comet smashed into the thick glacier that once covered Michigan and much of the surrounding parts of the U.S. and Canada. The fractured ice was thrown into space only to rain down as flying icebergs hundreds of miles from the crash site. Smaller bergs and pieces covered the entire fallout area 6' deep. Much of the megafauna of North America was wiped out, as were the Clovis People. The planet was cooled off for centuries as the ice slowly disappeared from the land and atmosphere. This short book makes its case eloquently and convincingly, refraining from hyperbole while painting a vivid description of what the event must have been like. I found the book convincing and exciting. Science changes its mind all the time, but I like to think that the mystery of the Carolina Bays has been solved. Great reading for science buffs.

This deals with one aspect of an emerging consensus regarding the end of the Ice Age. It seems that a swarm of cosmic projectiles hitthe Canadian ice sheet and several other places. It's an excitingdevelopment that may upend the current white male American dogma in several ways. Graham Hancock's Magicians of the Gods has plenty of fascinating stuff on this event. Worth checking out.
