After reading Francois's book, I am even more upset about the ongoing "poaching war" on our rhinos and elephants. I am a white South African, and although I thought I knew enough about rhinos and elephants, this book astonished me with its insights into the intelligence of animals. Here, especially, elephants. They are not simply big dumb animals. They have deep emotions, a disciplined family structure, and they no doubt possess extra-sensory perception. I enjoyed this memoir from start to finish, and wish the cruel poachers would read this -- but naturally, they are the undeveloped, crude souls of this world, killing these amazing beasts for ivory, which is nothing more than the keratin of your fingernails. A great story of the Thula Thula game lodge. If you love nature and animals, get this book. Thanks, Francois, for writing this lovely memoir of a game reserve!
What a gem to discover this book after the 3 books Lawrence had written. The description of daily chores on a game farm, the fight against poachers, squabbles with an outside team, the wonderful psyche of elephants and how to overcome a deep rooted fear make this a must read. Thanks for sharing so much detail with us. It comes once again as a shock to realize how poaching is well and alive in our country and the power behind these poachers is frightening. What have I learned?- that there is always light at the end of a dark tunnel as Michelle showed us. No problem is too difficult to overcome.- that our wildlife is our biggest asset- live your dream and pursue your passion regardless difficulties- we have so much to glean from animals behavioral wise.
This book is such a wonderful, fast read, and my only regret.... is that it "ended!" ... Could have read on forever!! I had read the previous book, "The Elephant Whisperer" by Anthony Lawrence, who sadly passed away a few years ago, and each book was sheer joy to read! I didn't want either to ever end!! If Francoise Malby Anthony ever pens another book, I will be first in line to order!!! LOVE THIS BOOK!! It would make a wonderful, heartwarming gift!
This book grabs you and does’nt let go. It is written in the first person by the wife and widow of Lawrence Anthony and is a sequel to his book “The Elephant Whispererâ€. Francoise describes, in fascinating detail, the complexities of managing a large conservation reserve in South Africa after Lawrence’s unexpected passing. In addition to oversight of the reserve and all its wildlife, Francoise continues the oversight and inauguration of a wildlife orphanage on the reserve. All this as African wildlife is increasingly threatened by highly organized and well financed poaching syndicates. It is a stunning, heartbreaking and inspiring account.
Fabulous!!!! Engaging and such an interesting and informative read. Given me a whole new understanding the incredible struggle for these amazing elephants, rhinos and hippos against poachers!Best part is you don’t have to read The Elephant Whisperer to throughly enjoy this one. Although more than likely you will want too, to read about Françoise’s amazing husband Lawrence and his connection with the elephants!
A satisfying follow on to The ELEPHANT Whisperer, concluding the story of a 'very courageous effort to continue the work at Thula Thula after Francoise' husband, Lawrence succumbed to a heart attack. It is a story of successes, failures and heartbreak, but also the brave story of Francoise and her dedicated staff to save and care for the animals even when danger came knocking. It is a story of Africa. Read it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, heart warming but also shows the massive challenges game reserves have in Africa against the war against poaching, these people are becoming more and more sophisticated, the challenge becoming more and more difficult. A really worth while read with many heart warming pages
This book will make you laugh and cry. It is a beautiful story of the love of one woman for the animals she shelters and the story of the elephants who love her, too. It changes your understanding of the magnificent elephants, intelligent, loving, family-oriented creatures.
