Shan paints a picture of the Cultural Revolution which is jarring, harrowing, and inspiring. His journey is a testament to the human instinct for survival and the ability to triumph in the face of extreme circumstance. He has lived through one of the darkest periods of Chinese history and then played an active role in shaping it's modern economy. I just can't believe this really happened. I couldn't help but think of Jeff Bezos (a personal hero) who often talks about how one shouldn't be proud of natural talent because that's a gift. What one should really be proud of is taking that natural talent and putting in the hard work to improve. Shan was clearly given many natural talents and through determination and work overcame extreme poverty to become a leading banker, academic, and now writer. On that note it reminds me a lot of Unbroken. I already shared this with all my friends so they can be in the know before this blows up when one of the major movie (or better yet TV??) studios picks up the rights to the story. I also really hope the sequel comes out ASAP.

An unvarnished and evocative account of a little understood time in modern Chinese history that brings to life the experiences of an entire generation. The book captures Shan’s spirit of resolve, pragmatism and optimism in the face of seemingly insurmountable, impersonal & exhausting odds at once inspiring as well as sobering, as the reader honestly questions whether they could have made it through the other side of those hard years in the Gobi. Beyond survival, the fact that a whole generation endured what it did yet managed to not only forgive the system that created such misery but integrate with it and end up leading it, is food for thought as the rest of the world undergoes differing degrees of political turmoil and engagement.I can’t help but consider whether the prevailing narrative that the Chinese leadership are in a “weaker” position than their US counterparts in the current trade disputes is really valid; if one considers the life paths each had to follow to reach their current position, elucidated by this very story, I would wager on the Chinese side’s toughness, pain tolerance and patience far outlasting Donald Trump’s.At the end of the book, I find myself hoping the author continues with a sequel about his experiences doing business with and in China over the last 25 years, a story that will be fascinating for altogether different reasons.Highly recommended!

I received this book yesterday and finished it within a day as I could not put it down. This is an incredible story of one man's exile and survival in the Gobi Desert during China's Cultural Revolution. This book really reminded me of Unbroken and Man's Search for Meaning. The author's story is nothing short of a miracle.

Shan writes in a brisk anecdotal style with a journalist's eye for telling detail. He takes us through extraordinary times and his own remarkable experiences. He is clear eyed and typically understated but just how extraordinary those experiences are jumps off the pages.Even for those who have studied this period in China the personal recollections of such an astute observer add a unique window on these events.Despite the underlying challenges and darkness of those times what comes through is Shan's resilience and wonderful humor - surely essential to his ultimate success. At heart though this is first and foremost a great story told by a thoughtful, funny and engaging person.

Highly recommend checking out this heart-wrenching memoir of a Beijing teenager during the Mao's Cultural Revolution. Weijian Shan went from a typical elementary school student to spending 6 of his teenage years in near slavery dealing with extreme starvation, forced labor, and harsh living conditions. This is a true underdog story where your country is your antagonist and your determination is your only weapon. This memoir should be a part of any Chinese history course aimed at understanding what it meant to grow up in China during the 1960s.

China's journey through the 20th Century was a "long march" if there ever was one. Starting the century under the dying Qing Dynasty and helpless to ward off the predations of European powers and a newly emerging Japan, things only worsened after the dynasty ended in 1912. For the Chinese and Japanese, one can say that WWII started early, as Japan in the thirties ended up occupying much of China, as well as Korea, Mongolia, and other places. As Japan fought the Chinese, the Chinese fought each other, Nationalists vs. Communists, and other assorted Warlords as well. Our hero enters the fray in the 1950's, after the Communist regime of Mao Tse-Tung was firmly established. His firsthand accounts of the "great leap forward" (a disaster) and then the "Cultural Revolution" (a catastrophe beyond description) convey an interesting detachment and analytical state of mind.He describes the horrors of the young dragging their "corrupt elders" into the streets for humiliation and worse, or simply beating them to death where they were, with minimal drama. Yes, horrible, be careful, avoid the trouble. But little emotion. Perhaps you simply can't afford emotion in circumstances like that.He asks for no sympathy as he describes his grueling life as a young teenager sent to farm in the desert; instead, he laments the stupidity and waste of it all. One example: after their extreme efforts to bring forth food from the desert, living on a starvation diet and often without water, the harvest was about 1/6 of the seed they planted. And that often rotted before transportation could take it away.Fast forward to Phd at Berkeley, Wharton professor, and now private equity manager! Along the way stellar academic performance from a kid dragged out of school in his early teens and sent to the desert. Pretty amazing.Every now and then a human being comes along that restores your faith in humanity, if only a little bit.
