In fact, I will recommend it to all my clients when they grow international sales forces (just as it was recommended to me for that reason).The content is common sense, the framework is easy to grasp, and the author has collected years of anecdotal observations appropriate for widespread relevance. She's clear and diagnostic in her advice and communication. Solid credibility, expertise and content. Get the book, read the book, full stop.But.Two giant and important stars docked as an alert to potential buyers of the audio portion of the book, which I would rate a zero were there not a text version available. Stop reading now if you were only going to buy the text version.Three irredeemable strikes against the audio version undermine Ms. Meyer's excellent efforts:1) The voice. As a business professional, you expect an authoritative presentation, much as you would experience during a conference or training session. You do not expect to be "read to" like a child attending a library reading. Yet the sing-songy community-theatre performance sounds just like the latter. (In fact, would be great at voicing schoolbooks to bring education to life.) This kills any notion of serious executive authority.2) The presentation. Because the narrator is obviously not versed in the language of business (let that sit for a moment...) she presents topics that are fundamental and crisp enough in writing as overly pedantic and breathless epiphanies. If you come across this sentence in the middle of an everyday business book paragraph - "One crucial principle to remember is that communicating is not just about speaking but also listening." - in context, a reader can reasonably assume we've finished with discussing the speaking topic, and we're transitioning over to the listening topic. However, the narrator naively presents this like it's a knowledge bomb you've never heard before -- ARE YOU WRITING THIS DOWN?? -- making the topic level seem more elementary and basic than you thought.3) I've saved the most surprising - and most egregious - for last. I'm still kind of not believing it myself.During the numerous multi-cultural examples, the narrator acts out the quotes from various cultures like puppet-show skits... by using mildly offensive, badly-impersonated foreign dialects in fake-broken English. Think of every cartoon stereotype, and it's re-enacted in this audiobook. I can't even begin to put my head around how the decision was made in developing a "how to communicate professionally across international cultures" book that it's OK to categorically lump entire countries into an inexpert caricature of their languages. Hey, it's not me being overly sensitive: it's pointing out the irony of this conscious decision in an international communication handbook!Maybe in the finale (I am having trouble getting through it) the narrator will surprise us in the audience with the revelation that the audio performance was just a parable to teach one of the "practical strategies for handling cross-cultural missteps" that the book promises and otherwise delivers on.We are business readers and we expect business value, not a sugar-coated lesson from Mary Poppins. To be clear, Mary Poppins is the definitive darling and a greatly loved character - but not a business trainer. Please, please narrate this book yourself, just as you train and present and educate. Please tell me this was a V1. Please tell me it was a joke.

Really good for international relations. I work in a global role. I can't tell you the number of times I've had a German, an American, and a Chinese person all on the same call. The cultures are so different that the interactions can quickly go awry. The German will be the most abrupt, seeming to interrupt, being totally blunt, and not realizing he could offend. The Chinese will be the quietest, waiting to ask their turn to speak, sometimes having an underlying meaning behind the words that isn't blunt, and being very careful to not offend. The American will be in the middle. What could happen is that the Chinese person finds the German to be a rude, heartless boor. The German will think the Chinese person not forceful, not direct enough, and pussy-footing around. The reality is, we all have different cultural heritages which overlay our perceptions that we aren't fully aware of. Meyer has worked quite a bit internationally and has 8 attributes where the different cultures are put on various continuum. After reading this, I came away being more effective in my global interactions and have now led several discussions successfully. And of course, learning to be aware of my own cultural issues...

This book really is for everyone, not just the traveler, or international business guru, I highly recommend this read. I found it insightful and helpful as I prepared to spend time studying abroad for my MA. I also believe this is a great resource for anyone in higher education. Having spent the last 11 years working at a University I see multiple applications to the diversity a college campus often fosters.Myers says, "The point here is that when examinging how people from different culture relate to one another, what matters is not the absolute position of either culture on the scale but rather the relative position of the two cultures. It is this relative positioning that determines how people view each other." In other words, you can't claim someone is a specific way without understanding the person you are describing them to more fully. For example, if I say "she is friendly" to both a very quiet person and to a vocal extrovert the expectations they develop may vary. One version of friendly might look very laid back and smiley, while the other looks more chatty and charismatic. I plan to use this resource for all levels of culture mapping both when abroad and on my home base.

I used this as a textbook for an undergraduate cross-cultural studies class in an international business management program. The book was relevant to the course for these students.The author gave multiple examples involving diverse countries from her own experience and qualitative research. The majority of the examples were European and US-based but also included several Asian cultures and a few examples from South and Central America. Very few examples were given from nations in Africa.What I appreciate most about Meyer's work was that each cultural approach was appropriate in its own setting. There are no "right" or "wrong" cultural practices. She highlights the difficulties encountered when one person or group works with another person or group that has different expectations. She provides strategies for managers working with multi-cultural teams and strategies for those working cross-culturally with a team from a culture different than their own.The author mentions several of Hofstede's dimensions and I supplemented the course with additional information from Hofstede's study.The visual diagrams were enlightening especially when comparing countries with multiple scales. As is usual when studying other cultures, the students had insights into their own cultural approaches.

This novel is awesome. It has an ending that is so heart-warming and touching that it brought tears to my eyes. I have read it several times because I use it in my classroom each year, and the ending still has the same effect on me. Even though it is a good, chilling ghost story, it contains a theme and message which is a good life lesson, which is not just for children, but all of us. I would love to see this story as a movie.

I ordered this book as I wanted to know the kind of ghost stories children are reading these days. I was not disappointed. It was a very good book even for a grandmother.

I have been reading many of Mary Downing Hahn's books for children and YA and love her supernatural-themed stories, especially her ghost stories. The Old Willis Place is an atmospheric ghost story which centers around a pair of siblings named Diana and Georgie. They have been living on the Willis farm for many years, and yet have no parents or family taking care of them. The siblings fend for themselves and are used to being on their own. Things change when a twelve-year-old girl named Lissa moves with her dad to the farm. Lissa's dad is the new caretaker who is tasked with overseeing the maintenance of the Old Willis Place, and when he's not working, he's writing.Diana and Georgie begin to 'borrow' Lissa's things and Lissa gets upset when her new bicycle, a favorite book, and her beloved teddy bear get taken. She writes about her angry feelings in her diary, wishing her dad would send her to school like other children instead of homeschooling her and keeping her isolated from everyone else. Diana is curious about Lissa and wishes to make friends with her, but her brother keeps reminding her of the 'rules' which can't be broken - rules such as not being seen by Lissa and her dad, not talking to anyone else, etc.When Diana eventually breaks the rules and becomes Lissa's friend, terrible consequences follow. Something old and malignant is unleashed when Lissa breaks into the Old Willis Place, and secrets long buried come to light. The story moves quite slowly in the beginning, and only takes off after Lissa enters the Old Willis Place. Children ages 9-12 will enjoy this suspenseful ghost story.

Horrible for children- unless you want them exposed to child abuse, murder, dead children and old witch that comes alive and haunt people and hurt people. And more.

This is my 10 year old daughter's favorite author. In fact, Mary Downing Hahn was the author that got my excellent reader to actually WANT to read. Before she'd read her required minutes and be done. We tried Little House, Sisters Grim, American Girls, and all of it was meh to her. Mary Downing Hahn broke through that. She really enjoyed this book.

Have you wanted to go into the old house at the end of the road? Have you walked through the woods and heard footsteps in the leaves behind you? Have you sat on a bench in the fall sunshine and heard a sigh beside you? Have you wondered about spirits that may lurk around you? Have you stared at a pale, thin figure with dark, wide eyes and thought...real or dead? You will thoroughly enjoy this book of dead children, banshee screaming dead old lady, murder, snakes and creepy broken houses. A quick read...but best done in the day!

This is a good book for middle school kids to read. Not scary at all but enough to be I interesting.

Great easy read for teens. Very vivid imagery and easier vocabulary to understand for anyone. Mystery throughout the whole book keeps you on your toes chapter after chapter. Needing to know what happens next.

Of the 3 kinect programming books I got (mainly cuz each one has its own SDK/language of choice), this one got me up & running the fastest. However, the instructions are dated for installing on windows, they are meant for the original X-box kinect sensor not the one dedicated to windows. Please see Ramsri Goutham's excellent tutorial:[...]In case the link is taken out of the review you can g**gl* kinect sensor for openni. Basically, there is a different method to install the correct drivers for the Kinect for Windows product. All the instructions for the OpenNI software in the book likely predate the Kinect for Windows product and fail to mention that the most common problem now has nothing to do with x86 vs. x64 but that the original Kinect hacks were for the Xbox kinect, NOT THE KINECT FOR WINDOWS DEVICE!!!! You MUST use the avin2 package and replace the “default” kinect sensor mod, and you MUST force the computer to NOT use the automatic windows update drivers, and you MUST force the computer to install the primesense drivers by navigating from driver update to “choose from a list” and selecting “all devices” and scrolling to PrimeSense and overriding the driver not signed warnings!!! Whew!

The material for this book is very out of date. I am sure it was a good book a few years ago but now all of the libraries are out of date, and there is no way to even run the examples shown.

Once I received the PDF version from O'Reilly, I found the book to be well written. It provides in-depth technical coverage of the Kinect 360 as a 3D camera. Perfect for my application. The Kindle version that I originally purchases from Amazon did not include the illustrations. A big Thank You to Customer Service at O'Reilly for quickly correcting the problem.

I just got this book and am enjoying it very much. I love that there are resources like this out there for people geek out on.The main reason for the review was to save some people time if they purchase the book a year after its publication date like me. Getting up and running can be a frustrating task going by the book, when I probably would have been better off just downloading everything without a care in the world.In the setup section it has a clear warning not to install the Microsoft SDK, otherwise your OpenNI stuff will not work. So I didn't install it. strangely it was working from the OpenNI stuff, but everytime I ran the examples in Processing, just said over and over can't find the device. So I finally gave in and installed the SDK because it sort of said to do so on the SimpleOpenNI site. Everything worked like a charm. There was no mention of this error in the book, and little if any online mention of it.So..word of caution, even if there was a compatibility issue with the SDK when this book was first written, the open source community has clearly resolved that. INSTALL AWAY!After that headache, I was up and running the examples in no time. Looking forward to reading the rest of the book frustration free:)

This book is 5 star for non-programmers. Mr. Borenstein walks the reader through the process of writing Kinect applications in a simple straightforward way that is extremely easy to follow. The code in the book is written using Processing (processing.org) which means even people with almost no background in software development and be up and running very quickly! If you are new to all of this then I recommend you read this book! You'll be amazed at how easy it is to write some really impressive Kinect programs.The book is a 4 start for professional software developers. Still a great value for the price and it will give you a quick ramp-up into Kinect development. But after reading this you'll want to check out something more technical if you are interesting in writing applications using the Microsoft Kinect SDK or one of the several open source tool sets.

Understanding People and Human Nature The first step in increasing your skill in dealing with people (successful human relations) is to properly understand people and their nature. When you have a proper understanding of human nature and people - when you know why people do the things that they do - when you know why and how people will react under certain conditions - then and only then can you become a skillful manager of people. Understanding people and human nature simply involves recognizing people for what they are - not what you think they are nor what you want them to be. What are they? PEOPLE ARE PRIMARILY INTERESTED IN THEMSELVES, NOT IN YOU! Putting this same thought another way - the other person is ten thousand times more interested in himself than he is in you. And vice versa! You are more interested in yourself than you are in any other person in the world. Remember that man's actions are governed by self thought, self interest - this trait is so strong in man that the dominant thought in charity is the satisfaction or pleasure that the giver gets from giving, not the good the gift will do. That comes second! You don't have to apologize or become embarrassed in recognizing that man's nature is self-interest - it has been that way from the beginning of time and will be that way till the end of time for man was put on earth with that nature. Too, we are all alike in this respect. This knowledge, that people are primarily interested in themselves, gives you the basis on which to work in your dealings with others. In subsequent chapters you will see how many successful techniques spring from this understanding. Terrific little book. No matter who you are or what you do, this book will help you be better. If you are open to reading concise well written words of wisdom that we all know as common sense. Even though the content of this book was passed down to almost all of us, in some way or fashion, before we entered high school; the way Les Giblin simply lays the words on the page, has an similar influence to suddenly being stuck by a grand epiphany. If our world leader would follow the simple advice in this book, we would live in a much better would. Does Amazon ship directly to the White House?

I've read this book several times in my life and have benefited each time. What's been even more interesting is understanding it's applicability across multiple cultures and regions. My experience is that nearly all of Giblin's guidance applies regardless of the country/culture of origin of who you're speaking with. So, even though different cultures have different protocols for introductions or transacting business, INTERPERSONAL communications will benefit from understanding Giblin's lessons, whether working with Japanese, Arabs, Mexicans, Canadians, New Englanders, or Texans.

Best book ever written on human communication. Period. Its pretty much "how to win friends and influence people" + all books on communication, in less than 50 pages long. You could literally read this book once every day and become a MASTER at true human connection and communication. Before you do anything else today, buy this book.

I did not expect this book to be as short as it was and if youve read any other books on communication then you definitely have heard whats in this book before. what i like about it is that it can be a little book to flip through to refresh your mind on all the other information youve picked up on in bigger books. it hits all the necessities and basics of communicating with people so its definitely worth it.

I've read half of it so far, in just a few days, and I think I'm really "getting" developmental trauma.I consider myself a fairly well-read client who considered but decided not to go the route of becoming a therapist myself. (Though, being mid-30's, that could always change.)For one, it doesn't seem like anything particularly TERRIBLE needs to have happened to you to end up with a not so well-regulated nervous system as an adult. It seems that you just need to have not had particularly well-regulated parents, who may have actually cared but been not so well-regulated themselves.And its not that the authors just "tell" you this and you have to accept it, I feel that it "intuitively" makes sense to me now in a way that it hadn't before.I consider this about as easy to read as a book like Peter Levine's Waking the Tiger, but its a lot better referenced; its far easier to read than Levine's In an Unspoken Voice (which I didn't quite complete but may try again after this one) but perhaps slightly less referenced.I think this book does a good job of saying "this is what we've found in our clinical practice(s) and here is some science that fits well with it." I think a lot of this stuff is not to the point of being so conclusively proven and supported by science, but is well-supported enough especially if you trust the authors in addition to what research is cited. Based on the way they are presenting their work, I feel fairly trusting toward them.I recommend this far ahead of Stephen Porges' Pocket Guide to the Polyvagal Theory, btw.

As a somatic psychotherapist working with early developmental trauma, this is the book I've been waiting for. It is a tremendous resource that pulls together attachment theory, polyvagal theory, brain development and trauma physiology into one cohesive and easy to read book. I'm referring it to colleagues and clients who want to understand the origins of emotional and physical symptoms in a new way.

Buyer beware: the Kindle version of this book has many issues. The typos are mildly distracting, but worse are sections where the citations end up causing duplicate lines/paragraphs. The actual content is fantastic, and presented in a way that is easy to read while still offering technical information. I highly recommend the hard copy of the book, and advise against the current Kindle version.

This is the book I have been searching for my whole career. The authors pull together information from attachment theory, polyvagal theory, brain development and trauma physiology, developmental and complex trauma, all in a way that is easy to read and apply to your work. I have a solid foundation in some of these areas, but I am really appreciating how all of these layers are pulled apart and then put back together in this book.

I am a parent, not a professional, but would recommend this to anyone wishing to get a much more in-depth understanding of developmental trauma, Polyvagal Theory, attachment, and why it can be so complicated and time consuming to help traumatized people return to a state of resilience and felt safety. The authors have so much experience between them, and their examples help bring the theoretical points to life. Any mental health professional who professes to being "trauma informed" should be required to read this book.

Help for the helpless (or not so knowledgeable)

I found Nurturing Resilience a remarkable book. Reading this book has enriched my somatic work with trauma survivors. I highly recommend it.

When you want simple, precise books..you can’t go wrong with these books. So I got this to remind me about parakeets. Had one many years ago. Refreshed my memory and gave me new facts, like can’t use Teflon type cookware because the fumes are dangerous for a parakeet! Good info about cages, food, cleanliness and playtime. Would recommend to anyone thinking about buying a parakeet.

The author has done an admirable job in encapsulating the essence of owning a parakeet. There is good information here for those who may never have considered owning a budgerigar (parakeet). Reading through the rather brief volume, however, I found a disturbingly-conservative approach which suggests that the supposedly-low maintenance bird is actually a lot of work (with an almost Victorian cleaning routine and overly-cautious advice to pre-screen even branches brought in from outside for the cage). The author seems to welcome bird ownership but wants to warn prospective owners of the constant perils and responsibilities. It's a bit disorganized in approach, despite the division of chapters and sections.The point of view of the author is full of unintended contradictory information, though this isn't flagrant. I was shocked to find an e-mail-grade typo in one of the early chapters. True proof-reading requires more than a spell-check run-through. Additionally, the book should be divided between those who have children in the house and those who do not.Furthermore, there is far too little information here about taming birds and different scenarios which may inform various methods.The appendix is filled with expired URL's - about half of which now point to Web hosts.In summary, though this is a good volume, I get the impression the author was hurrying to get it to press without making sure it was perfect or at least better-organized. Somehow, even the sale price of $6.99 (Kindle price) seemed a tad high, given the editing this volume. I expected better and certainly more.

I have had parakeets before but I clearly did a lot of things incorrectly. This was a very easy and informative read that brought me up to speed on what needs to be done to help give these little birds a healthy and productive life. I was happy to learn some of the things I am doing right. I now know what fruits and vegetables to feed these birds but in the week I have had them they seem to have no interest in anything but seeds. I will keep working on them because I want to have them for a very long time. This book is a great reference for a non-expert just adopting a parakeet for the first time and should be read before such a purchase is made.

Parakeets for Dummies was a great buy and extremely helpful. We recently bought three Parakeets and had no idea on how to truly care for them as in ; clipping wings, nails, types of feed, and their grooming needs. This was a great buy and the price was decent.

As someone who thought they would never own a bird I was clueless when I was given a baby parakeet from a friend. I needed a crash course to figure out how to not kill my new pet. This book gave a great crash course in how to correctly care for and protect my parakeet, as well as a lot of very interesting tid bits on how to train and entertain my new family member.

A really informative book, with plenty of humor to keep things entertaining. It gives a really good picture of the many pleasures of owning a budgie -- and points out the "problems". Budgies are very intelligent and entertaining, but are small parrots -- with all of the seed-slinging, chewing everything, loudness, and relentless curiosity. A good book.

I found this book very good at explaining all the responsibilities of parakeet ownership (for example: not using non-stick cookware as fumes can poison your parakeet), size of cages required, good foods to feed, foods to absolutely avoid, all in all very concise and on point. Very well written. Easy to understand. Points well made.

This book was spectacular, just exactly what I was looking for. Lots of information about keet background and behavior. Plenty of pointers and useful tips for beginning parakeet parents and enthusiasts.
