He has lived through one of the darkest periods of Chinese history and then played an active role in shaping it's modern economy. I just can't believe this really happened. I couldn't help but think of Jeff Bezos (a personal hero) who often talks about how one shouldn't be proud of natural talent because that's a gift. What one should really be proud of is taking that natural talent and putting in the hard work to improve. Shan was clearly given many natural talents and through determination and work overcame extreme poverty to become a leading banker, academic, and now writer.On that note it reminds me a lot of Unbroken. I already shared this with all my friends so they can be in the know before this blows up when one of the major movie (or better yet TV??) studios picks up the rights to the story. I also really hope the sequel comes out ASAP.

An unvarnished and evocative account of a little understood time in modern Chinese history that brings to life the experiences of an entire generation. The book captures Shan’s spirit of resolve, pragmatism and optimism in the face of seemingly insurmountable, impersonal & exhausting odds at once inspiring as well as sobering, as the reader honestly questions whether they could have made it through the other side of those hard years in the Gobi. I received this book yesterday and finished it within a day as I could not put it down. This is an incredible story of one man's exile and survival in the Gobi Desert during China's Cultural Revolution. This book really reminded me of Unbroken and Man's Search for Meaning. The author's story is nothing short of a miracle.

Shan writes in a brisk anecdotal style with a journalist's eye for telling detail. He takes us through extraordinary times and his own remarkable experiences. He is clear eyed and typically understated but just how extraordinary those experiences are jumps off the pages.Even for those who have studied this period in China the personal recollections of such an astute observer add a unique window on these events.Despite the underlying challenges and darkness of those times what comes through is Shan's resilience and wonderful humor - surely essential to his ultimate success.At heart though this is first and foremost a great story told by a thoughtful, funny and engaging person.

Highly recommend checking out this heart-wrenching memoir of a Beijing teenager during the Mao's Cultural Revolution. Weijian Shan went from a typical elementary school student to spending 6 of his teenage years in near slavery dealing with extreme starvation, forced labor, and harsh living conditions. This is a true underdog story where your country is your antagonist and your determination is your only weapon. This memoir should be a part of any Chinese history course aimed at understanding what it meant to grow up in China during the 1960s.

China's journey through the 20th Century was a "long march" if there ever was one. Starting the century under the dying Qing Dynasty and helpless to ward off the predations of European powers and a newly emerging Japan, things only worsened after the dynasty ended in 1912. For the Chinese and Japanese, one can say that WWII started early, as Japan in the thirties ended up occupying much of China, as well as Korea, Mongolia, and other places. Along the way stellar academic performance from a kid dragged out of school in his early teens and sent to the desert. Pretty amazing.Every now and then a human being comes along that restores your faith in humanity, if only a little bit.

A fun read that had me dreaming of pink sand and deep blue waters. The characters were well developed and relatable--a group of friends cruising to celebrate a milestone, but of course it isn't all smooth sailing. There are ups and downs along the way, and the writing made it easy to imagine that I was right with them on the journey. Would recommend this as a perfect book for the summer beach bag.

After seeing the positive reviews, I decided to buy this book. I read it all and I have much to say both negative and positive. I will start with the cons first. First, to let you know where I am coming from, I am a full time Ebay seller with over 13 years of experience thrift store shopping. It is where I get nearly everything I sell. I know of what I speak. I specialize in buying and selling two specific things most of the time in which I have full knowledge of but I keep my eyes open for quite a few things and always looking to expand my knowledge of what is valuable or not.The books starts off well but like I said, I will start with the cons so I can end on a high note. The title is "101 things you can find at Thrift stores," correct? That is quite misleading. Out of 101 things Jeremiah talks about, there are less than 40% you will ever find at thrift stores - maybe less than that. I have been to 20-30 thrift stores a week for 13 years and I have looked at everything they offer and much of this stuff is not ever there. It is either not donated or is set aside for the friends of the management. You simply should not write a book that says "101 things" and mention some extremely rare plush animal that you have as much a chance to find as an honest politician. In one of my favorite categories, there is one name brand I have found once in 13 years if that tells you anything. I especially got a kick out of the section on old metal lunchboxes. Jeremiah actually mentions that there are Beatles lunchboxes going for $1000-1500 on Ebay. So what? You will NEVER find these in a Goodwill. They are well known among antique dealers and many of these dealers have relationships with thrift stores. People already know what they are worth and do not just give them away. Then, there is a section on cookbooks. Yes, some of them are worth something but are you really going to encourage readers of this book to rummage through thousands and thousands of books hoping to find that one extremely rare gem? You would make more money flipping burgers for the time it would take to find certain books. Book dealers specialize in books and they spend years learning their values. It is an overwhelming category to the beginner.The author quite a few times even admits that he has never found many of the things he mentions saying things like "I could just see this sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to take it. I hope to find one someday (paraphrased)." You simply are not going to find vintage complete Lego sets of a certain theme worth $700 sitting in thrift stores except maybe once in a lifetime nor will you find a certain vintage automobile item he mentions. Good luck with that.It makes for good book filler and nothing more to talk about the most expensive thing in a certain category and then say "if you can find this, it is worth XXX on Ebay!" What good does it do to talk about this if you are never going to find such stuff? It is bordering on dishonesty to just mention it since the title of the books is "101 things you can find in thrift stores." You know there is a problem when even the author himself admits he had never found a lot of this stuff - maybe even most. Also, for a lot of this stuff mentioned, the thrift stores are wise to the value and price it up accordingly.Now, for the pros. The book is still worth getting. It is not expensive and well worth the download price. If you can read a book like this that helps you make money and even if you discarded 90% of it, then the remaining 10% would be worth it. I am not saying it is only 10% value because I have not figured that out yet. I am just making a point.There are some very interesting things in this book that I have not thought about and will definitely look for - things that do not take a lot of time (like fiddling through books or shirts) but with a quick look, can yield me some profit. There are some very findable things in this book. Some things I know I have passed right over and could kick myself but I will not any longer. There is not a doubt in my mind that there is some good information here that will help anyone add to their Ebay profits. All one needs to do is be very knowledgeable about one thing and you can start making money. I don't typically rummage through endless rows of clothing in thrift stores but I did see something hanging separately at the end of a rack recently that had a name brand that I had previously never heard of that was mentioned in this book. I remembered it and bought it for $15 and sold it for $117. I have made other money from the info in this book but just wanted to point this one out.

Easy to read, one chapter for each item. 3. Author mentions how much will worth or trade these item in Ebay. 4. It was free, at least for me. But I don't mind to pay for 2.99, so much information in it.

Interesting Read. While I already knew some of the more common ideas, I did learn some new things. There were a few suggestions I tried, but, obviously, they were a little out-dated as I did not get much of a return from them. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are an EBayer or just like the thrill of buying and selling special finds.

I’ve read every one of Susanna Kearsley’s books. Every one is 4-5 stars, with the exception of two: This would be one of them. No real emotional connection between any of the characters, little of the descriptive elements that Ms. Kearsley is known for, boring dialogue and the “plot twist” can’t erase the feeling of drowning in mediocrity. I didn’t care about the fates of any of the characters and, for the first time, found finishing a chore.if you’re as big a fan as I, then yes...you have to read it. Just go into it with managed expectations. If you’re considering this as a first author read, then I beg you to read Winter Sea, Shadowy Horses then Firebird. If not, you may not give Ms. Kearnsley another shot and that would truly be a loss.

Ahh, love me a good time-slip novel, and Kearsley delivers like nobody else.Eva returns to Cornwall, to her friends there, to scatter the ashes of her beloved sister. She stays to help build a tearoom. Searching for a hook to lure tourists to this out-of-the-way place, she discovers the legend of a 'Grey Lady' who haunts the location and a couple of smugglers who once operated nearby. Throwing herself into the project, she is startled to find her surrounding dissolve into a mist and finds herself 300 years or so into the past. Unable to control her comings and goings, she is set off balance by her passing back and forth between the two times. Then there's Daniel, a most attractive smuggler in the past.Kearsley is a mistress of suspense and holds the reader in her hand. We want Eva to have her HEA, but how she manages it is a delightful surprise. I could barely put the book down it was that good.

This has to be the first book that I have read, finished, and wanted to start it all over again. Funny, I wasn't too sure about a time-travel love story since I don't like the questions that come with time travel...like the butterfly effect...all the what if's -- what if she changes something in the past that will cause a ripple in her time. Susanna manages to address some of those questions rather smoothly.I had nothing to worry about with the time traveling because it wasn't long before I couldn't put the book down. When I did, I found myself wondering how this would end for the main character Eva Ward. This is an old fashion romance set in modern day England in a Gothic paranormal story with a little mystery and lots of great characters.The unexpected twist at the end really got me. The clues were so subtle that I missed many of them until everything was told towards the end. That's when I thought that I needed to read it again. I can't believe Susanna had added all those clues and I did not pick up on them. Almost to the end when someone says something that finally turns on the lightbulb for me...but wait a minute...that means....aaa no that can't be!! Needless to say, I was really surprised by the twists and the ending. Excellent! I like Susanna Kearsley's writing style and the way she tells a story so I certainly plan to read more of her books.

This was such a beautiful story, and im so sad that it's finished. I would've loved to know how Eva, Daniel, and Fergal lived out the remainder of their lives.I won't write much, as it's already been reviewed many times.I felt like the book started off quite dull, but as this is not my first kearsley book i plowed through. I didn't have to wait long though for the action to pick up. The love story between Daniel and Eva is so heart warmingly beautiful that i don't want it to end. I loved all the characters in this, from Claire, all the way to good ole Fergal.I am not a fan of time travel books, but still, if you're in doubt, just read this book. It will be in my heart for a long time.

Eva Ward returns to Cornwall to the place she and her family vacationed in long ago summers to spread her sister's ashes. Trelowarth is an old estate noted for its lush rose gardens, a legacy of the current owners' grandfather. Eva stays to help siblings Mark and Susan, the friends of her youth. She thinks it's stress when she starts hearing voices and sees apparitions, but soon finds that she is slipping into a past when Trelowarth was the home of smugglers Daniel and Jack Butler. She and Daniel establish a rapport, and maybe something more, but their relationship is hard to define when Eva keeps sliding back to her own time.If you like Diana Galbadon, you'll love The Rose Garden. Though it takes place in Cornwall, there is a connection to the Stuarts. But it's mostly a story about smuggling, the beauty of Cornwall, and the relationship between Eva and Daniel. Eva must balance her life in the present with her longing to be with Daniel.I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Fergal. He is Daniel's friend, an Irishman who 'adopts' Eva as his sister and the Murtagh of this story (though this isn't in any way a clone of Outlander).The writing is lovely. I did find it a little slow at the beginning, but once Eva meets Daniel, I couldn't put the book down. Another wonderful story by Ms. Kearsley.

Love Kearsley. Winter Sea, Shadowy Horses, Named for the Dragon, etc., but I really had a tough time with this one. At the start, I couldn't get into it, but then the poignancy of the scenes with Mark, the sentimentality of Claire at the story's resolution, and Eva's mourning of Katrina really struck a chord with me. And while I felt that there might have been more rounding of Daniel's character, and a little more consistency in historical detail, I found the description of time and place and the development of Fergal pretty flawless. Yes, the little similarities between this one and Outlander that other reviewers have pointed out niggles me too - but in fairness, when this was published, Outlander was a cult classic...it's prominence now should not hold to account every novel dealing with the 18th century which happens to have a character named Claire. No, for me, the biggest problem with this story is giving it all up for Daniel, who we never really get a reason to fall in love with. Honestly? I'd have stuck with Oliver.

This book had a lot of info that will help kids dealing with anxiety! My daughter is 9 years old and the way the Joyce describes things in the book really helped her to deal with it in her own way! It is a must buy!! Even for adults!

I purchased 2 of these books for my daughter and her friend who are 8.5 and 9 yrs old. I felt that the example's used were not age appropriate. Possibly better for a mature 10 and up. We have only read a few chapters and I might continue to read this on my own to determine if we should keep reading. If i feel differently after reading i will update.

My 6-year-old daughter and I read this together. She had no trouble understanding the concepts as they are explained on a simple level and she could relate to the examples with little modification. I consider preparing my daughter spiritually and mentally to be one of the basic responsibilities of being her parent. This is a great tool to teach her to recognize common human errors in thinking, as well as the schemes of the enemy, and to familiarize her with constructive and effective ways to counteract and combat them. Love Joyce Meyer, loved the adult version of this book, and the kids' version did not disappoint in any way!

No matter what Joyce Meyer writes, she can relate to her audience. My kid learned a lot of very practical points for keeping his mind stayed on Christ and dealing with the negative thoughts that can threaten to take over his mind. He discerns it and then he binds the enemy so he no longer has influence. God is greater in His heart and mind because of this book.

Joyce Meyer books have all made us stop and think what am I doing, how can I change my situation. This lady took the time to do a book for children on the battlefield of the mind. Wow, this book has so many mind thoughts that kids experience. How many times have you asked why are you doing that, what made you think you could get a way with that. What are our kids thininking? So many times they are not aware of why they did what they did until confronted. If we have these same problems how much more do our kids. Between school and home a child has a lot to contend with. Sometimes we don't know why our child is misbehaving. What is he thinking, why is he acting out, what can we do to help him. This book is full of situations to help you and your child learn" to think about what he is thinking about " per JM and it has Scriptures to back it up key figure drawing and questions as you go through the book. I highly recomment this book to all parents and those who are taking care a child, its even good for you to use with your teens.

Kids must read this! Just started and it has already helped them so much and made such a difference. Also love the fact that it is written for kids in a way they relate and understand. Great buy!

Just bought this book to read with my 7 and 8 year old. We're all learning from it. God is a good God and breaking this down into terms we all 3 can apply to our lives. It's so good to teach them early how quick the devil tries to control our thoughts. May we be changed forever from this amazing down to earth teaching

We are reading this together as a family. Kids like it, and it brings up a lot of good conversation for our family. I usually read a section while we are sitting at the dinner table. Glad I purchased.
