Great book ! Every style is in this book and most are written for 5 gallon batches. All grain and extract instructions are included for every recipe.
Bought this for my dad for Fathers Day since he does a LOT of Home Brew. He absolutely loved it! Both of us can't wait to try several of these recipes.
I really like this book. I thumb through it often to help inspire recipes of my own or if I want to recreate one of the beers I love . It has various beers and styles ranging from classic light American lagers to rare Belgian ales. I was surprised not to find a couple clone recipes I was expecting to see but it still has a lot to offer.
Great recipes for craft Brew
Great recipes thst work.
Brought to you by the folks who publish Brew Your Own magazine, this beer bible features 300 clone recipes, put together in cooperation with the original brewers and frequently including tips and tricks of the trade from these brewers. Although the introduction claims that the book is aimed at home brewers of all skill levels, it clearly helps if you have worked with more than just a Mr. Beer kit before. The first chapter, ‘Cloning Basics & Recipe Standards,’ offers a brief guide on how to analyze any commercially available beer to determine the factors that must be present in a successful clone. It also gives instructions on how to best evaluate how your clone recipe stands up to the original brew and any former batches you may have made. Ultimately, with some practice, the home brewer should be able to use these processes to create his or her own clone recipes from scratch. You can see where prior brewing experience and having established a brewing procedure comes in handy. If you don’t want to bother with the fancy footwork, delve right in by choosing your favorite style of beer from the recipes grouped into 17 different chapters, from IPAs, Porters, and Stouts over Belgian-style and British-style Ales to Brown Ales, Pilsners, European- and North American-style Ales & Lagers to Winter Beers and much more. Every recipe comes in an all-grain or extract with grain version to accommodate personal preference. The “Big Book†ends with a resource chapter for those needing help or wishing to connect to fellow brewers; here, you find a listing of books, websites, tools & calculations, and message boards/forums for more information. My only beef with this list is the lack of locations where the less established home brewer might find specialty ingredients. At least a couple of suggestions may have been helpful. My personal preference would also have been to give a listing of beers contained in each chapter at the beginning of the chapter instead of just jumping in. Input from my home brewing husband, when he discovered the inclusion of a Pliny the Elder clone: “This might be a cool book to have!â€â€œThe Brew Your Own Big Book of Clone Recipes†is published by Quarto Publishing Group – Voyageur Press. I received a free copy in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own, except where otherwise stated.
This book is pretty much exactly as it presents itself- lots of recipe options for replicating your favorite beers at home!My husband and I enjoyed browsing the different beers and picking out a few of our preferred brews and breweries along the way. Funny thing is, we have all the equipment to start home brewing but the only thing we've made so far is wine!"The Brew Your Own Big Book of Clone Recipes" has prodded us to get our beer brewing plans started. Brew Your Own magazine also has a general homebrewing guide that might be worth a look, too.The pictures are fabulous and the recipes/directions seem pretty intuitive. There are literally hundreds of recipes broken down into seventeen chapters (which are categorized by type), and the book also includes beginner brewing tips and resources.I definitely recommend this book for novice and seasoned brewers alike!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from NetGalley for my unbiased opinion of the book. I really enjoyed this book. I made the moose knuckle pale ale. I was impressed how easy it was to do and the taste of the ale was comparable to anything I could have bought in the store.

A hands-on, step-by-step guide with easy instructions and clear photos that demonstrate each juggling, balancing, clowning, and show-making activity. - Vivian Kirkfield, Picture Books Help Kids Soar blogThis is an excellent book, expertly done, and deserves a place on the bookshelf of any child interested in exploring the circus arts. - International Jugglersâ?? AssociationA great reference book for school libraries [. . .] It’s also a great hands-on gift for adventurous youth, and for video game-obsessed or artistic youth who need to know that not all physical activity is highly competitive or sports based! - CircusTalkDIY Circus Lab for Kids is a perfect circus classroom resource and also a tool for children who are interested in learning circus skills but who live in places where there is no access to circus classes. - Fiona Bradley, Circus TalkThe book allows children to learn the basics of juggling, balancing, clowning and show-making, each skill paired with tutorials on how to hand-make props they might need at a cheaper cost than purchasing ready-made equipment. Whether it’s juggling balls from tennis balls filled with sand and covered with colorful balloons suitable for kids of any age, or a plywood tight-rope frame that may need some adult assistance, the idea is to create an environment of inclusivity. - Monadnock Ledger-TranscriptDavis notes that the “circus is for everyone”—an inclusive message echoed by the activities, which align with different ability levels and interests, from tight rope walking to designing T-shirts. - Publishers WeeklyDavis is a long-time circus instructor and her experience is immediately evident in her clear instructions, which are broken into written steps with photo illustrations featuring actual youth circus artists, while website links provide video demonstrations of prop/apparatus construction and the skills themselves. Jackie Leigh Davis' DIY Circus Lab is the perfect book for its time. With the rise in popularity of circus arts in schools and in after school programs, many children are asking how to join in. Jackie's beautifully encouraging and inclusive approach to joining the circus is just the encouragement young ones need to take charge of their own projects and get physical. All the make-it-yourself projects are tried and tested by circus educators. I highly recommend this book as a gift for a child who could use a little creativity and wonder in their life.
What a beautiful book, beautiful to the eye and to the heart. DIY Circus Lab distills many of the best teaching techniques and ideas that circus professionals have been using for years and added some wonderful new ones. I worked in the world of circus for decades, I've seen Jackie in action (she's amazing) and I was completely fascinated with the clear descriptions, the insightful sidebars, even the safety notes. And the pictures of young performers demonstrating the moves made my heart sing.
Great book, especially for those people who want to start their own mini circus! The author is a great person in the social circus field. Cant wait to use the book soon.
This author has lived and breathed a lifetime of circus arts. She writes from a wealth of experience and education. I have seen the delight she has sparked in the children she has taught....it’s a great book!!
What a delightful book, a feast for the eyes and the imagination! The explanations of technique, construction, history, and showmanship are all consistently spot-on, and the author's enthusiasm for circus positively contagious. The book is lavishly illustrated, and there are also online videos to go with each chapter. Youth circus is growing by leaps and bounds, and it could not have a better evangelist than Jackie Leigh Davis.
Jackie's book is a true delight - with her book you will be able to activate your family, friends, and community into joyful circus activity right in your backyard. She pairs easy to achieve skills and simple to understand building projects with a deeply rooted circus perspective gathered from years not only teaching circus, but also galvanizing the national circus community by being a founding member of the American Youth Circus Organization. Jackie's book is well researched, fun to read, and easy to engage with. No home, library, arts education program, or community organization should be without this book!

This is a short book with a pretty quick overview of Revolutionary War Boston. The writing is not stellar - it feels sort of like reading a high school history report, but at least that means it is accessible to everyone. Read a sample and if you like it, then it's probably worth the purchase. The sections at the end of each chapter that tell you about current landmarks and how they relate to historical events will be useful when visiting - but again, it is written to what seems to be a middle school audience.
The author has brought lively and fresh storytelling to an historical narrative that many of us may find familiar. Walk the streets of Boston with its famous and not-so-famous rebels through these pages and see the history of city during the 1760s and 1770s in a new light. Recommended for both the well-read and the novice who want to understand Boston and the years prior to the American Revolution anew.
Love the book. Was hoping for some information about the Tea Party participants and the members of theboston Masonic Lodge. I know that information is difficult/impossible to come by so I'll keep reading.
This is one of my favorite Boston books. I thought it was the easiest to read and the most interesting out of all the Revolutionary Boston books I read for my upcoming trip. I really like the "then and now" section at the end of every chapter.
Reading this book a second time now - bought it prior to my first trip to Boston and was of great value as it made the history tours all the more interesting. I really thought the author did a great job capturing the era. Download a sample and if you like it the rest of the book is just as good.
I enjoyed this book immensely. A fun informative book
Excellent and entertaining read that keeps your attention with a great depiction of the events in Boston that led up to the American Revolution. This book will help you understand the characters and events that you know you should know in history and their importance. The author has a unique ability to make these characters jump off the page and make you feel like a bystander standing on the streets watching one of the Bostonians crazy riots. A recommended read to anyone.
Prompt delivery. Item as described. Great transaction! Thank you...

As soon as I learned that I'd spend a week in Budapest (mostly on business), I went to the public library to take out a few guidebooks (DK's Top 10 Budapest, Rick Steves Budapest, and Fodor's 25 Best Budapest). I consulted each of the guide books in depth, trying to map out how to prepare for the trip and what was really a must-see. I ended up buying the Kindle version of the Rick Steves book. I am writing this review as a three-in-one, as I expect that you, too, are trying to decide which one is worth purchasing.I'm a bit surprised at how few of the Amazon reviews actually speak to the usefulness of the guidebooks; most of them seem to be written by people who read the books before the trip rather than reporting on the books' helpfulness on the city streets. Each of them has value, no question; it's just that the books each bring something different to the table.Top 10 Budapest and the Fodor's guide are similar to one another. Each is meant for the person dashing through the city who wants to see the "can't miss" sights -- and that absolutely described me.Top 10 Budapest: As with the others in this series, the fits-in-your-purse book has plenty of pretty photos, lots of clear maps, walking tours ("a day in the Castle District and North Buda"), and the promised Top 10 lists, from overall sights (Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica, etc.) to restaurants to children's attractions. My problem with it is that its descriptions are so short you can't easily determine if you care about the destination. For instance, the Museum of Applied Arts gets four sentences. (I didn't go, but only because I didn't have time.) It also sends you to places that make you feel you have TOURIST stamped on your forehead; the Vaci utca is its #3 destination, and while I didn't mind a walk through the area I wouldn't say it's THAT important.Fodor's 25 Best Budapest: This book, too, is a short-and-sweet overview to the city, emphasizing the most popular sights, with good maps and photos. Before the trip this was my #3 choice, but now that I returned I'd put it above the DK guide. I like its explanations a bit more than the Top 10 guide, and it categorizes the sights by your interest ("climbing high" or "entertaining the kids"). Plus, it lists restaurants by neighborhood, so when you're near Parliament you can say, "What's there to eat around here?" My tired feet say: That matters. As I wrote, the guidebook I took with me was the Rick Steves guide. That's largely because his guidebooks excel at helping set expectations. For instance, he goes into great detail about how you should not trust taxi drivers in Budapest (for good reason, too; we took one taxi to a friend's office, and I later realized how many circles we went in). (An aside: Uber is now in Budapest, and it works great. It's also dirt cheap. That's your solution.)Instead of trying to fit everything into a tiny book (which necessarily limits how many things to include and how much to say), Steves' book shares a lot of detail, with real storytelling -- as if you had a (semi)-local telling you about his city. A whole chapter is devoted to the mineral baths, including an exhortation to "do" them (I'm glad I listened!) and explanations about the process (which, as the book explains, is REALLY confusing; the "what to do" steps reassured me greatly). The Great Market Hall (easily my favorite stop!) gets four full pages of description, including food items of particular interest ("At the end of this set of stalls, in the dairy case, they sell Turo Rudi, a semi-sweet cottage cheese covered in chocolate. ...This is a favorite treat for young Hungarians -- mothers get their kids to behave here by promising to buy them one.") His walking tours don't give only historical notations; he tells you to "look at the McDonalds on the right" and explains why such a thing matters (it was the first one in then-Communist Hungary). The downside is that Steves' books are always opinionated, and I don't always agree with his opinions. I rarely find his restaurant recommendations useful, for instance. As it happens, my friend took us to Koleves, which Steves did suggest, and I liked it quite a bit. But the description never would have convinced me to bother. Also, with the Kindle version (at least on my iPad), the maps aren't well integrated with the text, so doing one of the walks was rather a pain. You might want to invest in a map, or at least grab a paper one from your hotel. If I had to do it again, I'd get both the Rick Steves book AND the Fodor's guide -- the latter, perhaps, in the paper version, as it's light enough to put in your day pack.
Not his best, but not his worst. Overall, a decent guide for helping navigate what to do in Budapest, and how to do it. However, after enjoying 10 days in Budapest, I would strongly encourage users not to rely upon this travel guide implicitly. There was outdated information regarding costs, how to get tickets, etc. Also, the times he listed to complete walking tours were usually vastly underestimated, while he recommended an overnight excursion for places like Eger when that entire city was very easily seen in one day. Budapest is far more walkable than he makes it sound, so you may not need any travel pass at all. Also notable was how he really downplayed Castle Hill, which we found to be an absolutely charming, insightful, and enjoyably all-day excursion. Similarly, we were glad that we devoted more time to Margaret Island than was recommended. Lastly, this book was uncharacteristically infused with endless political commentary and criticism (rather than his usual objective history providing with slightly humorous explanations), which was certainly distracting and out of place.
So absolutely bad I was stunned. Have become addicted to Rick Steves through London, Paris, Madrid, Florence, Rome, Saltzburg and Vienna. Budapest travel guide was not only incomplete and superficial but he was actually disparaging about a number of sites.Yes, he gets you through the bath situation with some detail and enthusiasm but nothing else!! It’s as if he is writing for someone walking off a Viking River cruise for a 2 night stay. There is a lot to do in this city but because many of the museums have minimal English descriptions a “real†travel guide is needed. He so totally phoned this book in. Another reviewer accurately stated that one should not rely on Rick Steves for Budapest as you might for other big European cities.Budapest is a fantastic city that is on the verge of being a great European city. In April there were few big tourist groups as are seen in Paris and Saltzburg. Although English is not spoken well by anyone over 30, everyone was pleasant and welcoming. Your tourist money is well spent supporting this gem of a city. What they have done with regard to restoration since WW2 and the Soviets (left in 1989) is amazing. Happy travels!
We are just back from our Budapest vacation, and took two copies of Rick Steve's Budapest along. We found this to be a very useful practical guide. He includes many practical details, that one would have to had actually done, to know. Also included, for example, is an expanded narrative about the "House of Terror" tour (other museums or attractions are also expanded on). The 'House of Terror' (which really should just be called "House of History" - I think their PR firm tried to enhance the excitement) has an audio guide and printed English pages in each room; however Rick Steve's expanded information in Budapest Guide enables one to grasp and understand the material or subject more readily, efficiently, and thoroughly. The book includes a good summary of historical background and events, to put things in context. He has a lot of good honest assessments of various places and attractions, and good information about getting around, local behavior, etc. As in his other guides, for each attraction or place, he includes information about hours, Days open, costs, how to get there, and finding it on the map. We carried this around and used it all the time. Well organized, honest points of view, and effective.

From the Back Cover
After the success of the first edition, Introduction to Functional Programming using Haskell has been thoroughly updated and revised to provide a complete grounding in the principles and techniques of programming with functions. The second edition uses the popular language Haskell to express functional programs. There are new chapters on program optimisation, abstract datatypes in a functional setting, and programming in a monadic style. There are complete new case studies, and many new exercises. As in the first edition, there is an emphasis on the fundamental techniques for reasoning about functional programs, and for deriving them systematically from their specifications. The book is self-contained, assuming no prior knowledge of programming and is suitable as an introductory undergraduate text for first- or second-year students.

Book was in great condition when I got it
The bad: Despite the "introduction" level implied in the title, this is a hard book to read. The book is not a "Haskell book" either. The author uses a mathematical notation that easily translates to Haskell but it's not Haskell per se.The good: Having said that, the author gives a very good explanation of some of the concepts that make functional programming different from other paradigms. Some of the explanations given in the book are by far better (and more in-depth) than what's found on the web. That's one of the reason is at times hard to read. For example, the section on curring is very good and raises points that I have not seen in other books/articles.
There is a lot of excellent information in this book. However, it is very dense and the reader should beware that many of the programs in the book don't work. I surmise that they are more intended to show the algorithm rather than the actual Haskell implementation. In Haskell it is particularly important to pay attention to the details, which is why I give this book only three stars. Here is an example of a program in the book that does not work.On page 82 the author Richard Bird provides this sample implementation of the floor function:floor x = searchFrom 0 where searchFrom = decrease . upper . lower lower = until (<=x) decrease upper = until (>x) increase decrease n = n - 1 increase n = n + 1The problem with that implementation is that it does not return an Integer value; rather, it returns a decimal (Double) value. Here's an example: floor (-3.4) -- returns (-4.0)That is wrong. The specification for floor says that it "maps a value of type Float to a value of type Integer." Clearly it is not producing an Integer result.I will now explain how to revise floor so that it returns an Integer value. The heart of the problem is with the until function. Here is how Richard Bird implements it:until :: (a -> Bool) -> (a -> a) -> a -> auntil p f y = if p y then y else until p f (f y)It takes three arguments, p, f, and y. Look at the signature of that function. The type of the third argument, y, dictates the type of the other arguments and the type of the result--whatever type y is, the other arguments must be the same type and the result must be the same type.Function until is first invoked by function lower: lower = until (<=x) decrease 0Here are the three arguments provided to function until:(1) p is the partial function (<=x), where x is the input to the floor function. Suppose x is this value: x = (-3.4)(2) f is the function decrease(3) y is 0Now you may argue, "Hey, the third argument, y, is 0 and that's an Integer, so clearly the result of function until will be an Integer." However, that is not correct. The type of 0 is ambiguous, it could be an Integer or it could be a Double. This ambiguity can be seen by checking its type using WinGHCi::type 00 :: Num a => aThe class Num is high up in Haskell's type hierarchy and it represents any number (Integer, Double, etc.). Thus, we cannot determine the type of function until's result just by examining its third argument. The other arguments will determine whether the 0 is an Integer or a Double. Let's examine the first argument: p is the partial function (<=x), where x = (-3.4)p compares "some value" against (-3.4). Let's check the type of (-3.4) using WinGHCi::type (-3.4)(-3.4) :: Fractional a => aThe datatype Double falls within the class Fractional. So p compares "some value" against a Double. Fundamental rule of Haskell: you cannot compare an Integer against a Double, you can only compare a Double against a Double.Recall that p compares "some value" against (-3.4). What is that "some value"? If we examine the body of function until we see that it is the third argument, y, and we know that y = 0. Ah, now we know how Haskell will treat 0: since the 0 is being compared against a Double value Haskell will treat the 0 as a Double. Okay, now that we know the type of y we can plug it into the type signature for function until:until :: (a -> Bool) -> (a -> a) -> Double -> aAll a's must be of the same type, so the other a's must also be Double:until :: (Double -> Bool) -> (Double -> Double) -> Double -> DoubleTherefore function until will return a Double value. For example: until (<=x) decrease 0 -- returns (0.0)The output of function until is assigned to function lower: lower = until (<=x) decreaseSo the result of function lower is a Double value. The output of lower is then input to upper and the Double datatype propagates through the entire chain of composed functions: decrease . upper . lowerThe result of function floor is therefore a Double value.Okay, so how do we get floor to return an Integer value? The key is to prevent p in function until from casting the type of y to a Double. Recall function lower:lower = until (<=x) decrease 0Notice that p is this partial function: (<=x)We must modify p to express, "Hey, compare x against an Integer value that has been cast to a Double value." That is implemented using a Lambda (anonymous) function: (\a -> (realToFrac a) <= x)Read that as: For whatever value, a, is provided convert it to a Fractional (Double) value and then compare it to x.Wow!So we are telling Haskell that the 0 is not to be treated as a Fractional (Double) value, it is to be treated as a Real (Integer) value. At last, we can implement function floor and it will return the desired Integer result:floor x = searchFrom 0 where searchFrom = decrease . upper . lower lower = until (\a -> (realToFrac a) <= x) decrease upper = until (\a -> (realToFrac a) > x) increase decrease n = n - 1 increase n = n + 1Notice that wherever function until is called (in lower and upper), the first argument, p, is a Lambda (anonymous) function that takes its argument, a, and casts it from a Real (Integer) value to a Fractional (Double) value. Here are a couple examples of using this revised floor function: floor (-3.4) -- returns (-4) floor 3.4 -- returns 3Notice that floor now returns an Integer value, which is what we want. Here is the signature for floor:floor :: (Fractional a, Ord a, Real c) => a -> cRead as: Invoke function floor with a Fractional (Double) value and it will return a Real (Integer) value. On page 83 Richard Bird shows a second version of function floor that uses a binary search:floor x = searchFrom (-1, 1) where searchFrom = fst . middle . cross(lower, upper) lower = until (<= x) double upper = until (> x) double middle = until done improve done (m, n) = (m + 1 == n) improve (m, n) = if p <= x then (p, n) else (m, p) where p = (m + n) div 2That has multiple problems. First, it is syntactically not a well-formed Haskell program because the div operator (on the last line) must have back ticks ( ` ) surrounding it: where p = (m + n) `div` 2Second, the functions lower and upper invoke function until. The first argument to until must be a Lambda function as described above: lower = until (\m -> (realToFrac m) <= x) double upper = until (\n -> (realToFrac n) > x) doubleThird, the function improve compares p (an Integer) against x (a Double), so p must be cast to a Fractional (Double) value: improve (m, n) = if (realToFrac p) <= x then (p, n) else (m, p) where p = (m + n) div 2With those three changes the function works as desired:floor x = searchFrom (-1, 1) where searchFrom = fst . middle . cross(lower, upper) lower = until (\m -> (realToFrac m) <= x) double upper = until (\n -> (realToFrac n) > x) double middle = until done improve done (m, n) = (m + 1 == n) improve (m, n) = if (realToFrac p) <= x then (p, n) else (m, p) where p = (m + n) `div` 2Here are a couple examples of using the revised floor function: floor (-3.4) -- returns (-4) floor 3.4 -- returns 3Notice that floor now returns an Integer value, which is what we want. Here is the signature for floor:floor :: (Fractional a, Ord a, Real c) => a -> cRead as: Invoke function floor with a Fractional (Double) value and it will return a Real (Integer) value.
Bird and Wadler got me started on functional programming. Before that, I'd only seen discussions of C++/STL functors and functions like for, map etcetera.B&W was dense, and magic. It reminded me of the first time I read the K&R C book, you're following along fine, and all of a sudden you're off the deep end!The syntax, sort of ML-like adds to the 'magic' feel of it all. Overall I think it's a good book. But like with K&R, make this your second or third book, to ground you in the fundamentals after you've become somewhat familiar with the syntax and application of a particular fnal language. That said, it covers a wide breadth of topics, and does justice to them as well. But this opinion comes from a newbie at functional programming, so caveat lector! For me, it made me realise that there was a whole 'new' way of programming, vastly bigger than the few functions C++ had in its STL, and that C++ syntax mostly got in the way. However, perhaps because of this book, I never quite grokked Haskell/ML syntax either, though LISP I find easy (easier).
